Our Daily Thread 5-20-14

Good Morning!

Today’s header photo is from Kare.

On this day in 1506, in Spain, Christopher Columbus died in poverty.

In 1775 North Carolina became the first colony to declare its independence. This is the date that is on the George state flag even though the date of this event has been questioned.

In 1861 North Carolina became the eleventh state to secede from the Union.

In 1930 the first airplane was catapulted from a dirigible.

And in 1969 U.S. and South Vietnamese forces captured Apbia Mountain, aka Hamburger Hill.

“To pitch a perfect game wearing pinstripes at Yankee Stadium, it’s unbelievable. Growing up a Yankee fan, to come out here and make history, it really is a dream come true.”

  1. Yup, just about that time, Chas. Enjoy your Tuesday as I sleep my way into Wednesday. Really feeling that it is the end of the school year. 19 days left.

  2. Those gently rolling hills look good for sking. And yo have some really big birds up north, Kare.

Bosley is checking out my “I’m a Georgia Voter” sticker. Anything makes a good reason to purr. Very few in line voting line when the polls opened at 7:00 this morning. I thought there would be more. At least the weather is good for it.

  3. It is so nice to see photos from other areas of the country. Oh, I know I could look online or in a book but those are buffed and polished. It is nice to see what YOU see and what YOU think is pretty. I don’t know any of those professional photographers.

Jimmy Stewart always reminds me of my grandfather. In looks, not in character. My grandfather was not a good man, although as a child I adored him. As an adult, I knew too much about him.

During last night’s FB messaging session with my three friends from school, G said he may go out on tour with someone this summer and if he does he will be near each of us at some point in the tour. If that happens I will get to see my “boy” twice in one year. If that doesn’t happen he is on “hold” for something in New Orleans, which will mean B and R will fly in from the northeast and I can drive over and we can all be together for a long weekend. It has been almost two years since we were all together and they haven’t met Mr. P. In all it is something to look forward to.

I, once again have a busy day ahead. Will check back later.

  4. After those sandhill cranes finished their dancing, they proceeded to herd the Canada geese out of their field. It was neat to watch. The grass and fields are greening up now, but we’re still waiting on the trees to bud out. It’s a very late spring this year.

I presume you mean cross-country skiing. (Is that what they call Nordic?) I don’t think the slalom or other down hill skiing would work well on those hills. But the picture and your comment reminded me of an old poster promoting “Ski Missouri”. It showed a guy in farmer’s clothing, complete with a straw hat and rubber boots in a muddy pasture going uphill on skis, or at least trying to. It was a joke, obviously.

Kare- I wondered what the bigger birds were. I see a lot of Canada geese around here in fall and winter, since the Mississippi River is one of their migration routes.

  6. And I agree with Kim about the photos. Professional photos are okay, but I often wonder how much touching up the photo had before publishing.

  7. I almost said cross country sking but knew it was not necessary because I was using the advice of a seasoned writer who says, “Give the reader credit,” meaning that they are smart enough to know certain things without having to do an overdose on words. I am learning 🙂 . I was imagining the area as snow covered and remembering a friend in Montana who enjoyed cross country sking with her husband.

  8. Well, I have to confess that if AJ ever posts my sapsucker photo, it has been doctored. There was a stick right behind the bird’s beak that made the beak “blend in” to the background a bit too much, so I had my husband remove the stick digitally. He has done that for me with three or four bird photos. Otherwise, I only crop photos (if needed) or make them lighter or darker (if needed).

  9. Nice photo! I couldn’t guess where it was from (I usually try before reading who sent it in), the terrain was so “other” and the birds so big. Good place for snowshoe travel in the winter.

Long day yesterday but finished up writing at home with still a couple hours of daylight left (love these long days). So I took Cowboy to the dog park for a while and then walked both dogs up to our local park to see the ducks and geese.

We’re gearing up at work for the long Memorial Day weekend — it means we need to hustle to get a lot of stories in the queue to cover us for extra weekend days. I usually volunteer to cover the large Memorial Day program held near me (this year’s speaker is an Afghanistan vet who now plays for Clemson?) but I really would prefer to pass on it this year, I need a long weekend.

  10. Yesterday: sixteen year old drove the hour plus to Lewiston for her CNA course and back home..
    School in the morning upstairs.
Boys drove to Nezperce for small enging class and then home.
Fifteen year old drove Subaru to Grangeville for replacement tires after the blow out and to take the twelve year old to his baseball game.
We drove the van to Nezperce to seven year old’s baseball practice.
Seventeen year old drove the truck to Grangeville for repairs, catching a ride back with fifteen year old in case the game went late and it was too dark for him to drive.
Then we drove to Grangeville to watch the game.
We left early to get the little folk home and to bed.
Fifteen year old left to take the car to Greencreek for repairs.
Another seventeen year old drove to Greencreek with Husband as it was a learning drive, to pick up the people at the repair place.

    Could it get any busier?

Why yes, it can. Today we have a game in Kamiah, practice in Nezperce, track awards in Nezperce, and husband has gone to have coffee with the boys…..

  11. No voting here, though I hear California is having an election of some sort, but nothing has come for me to vote. That’s okay as it is always a problem to find someone returning who will mail it for me.

  12. We’ve already voted in NC. I’ve been looking in but didn’t have anything to talk about. I’ve been working in the yard, mostly. Taking a few breaks now and then.

  13. off to school this Wednesday mornng. Our science unit is on weather. I mentioned that water could freeze and one of my boys looked at me very puzzled and said, “huh” I think that he thought I was crazy. Cold here is maybe in the 40’s at night, but always into the 70’s during the day. It did help that someone got hurt at recess and came back with an ice pack from the office. I took it out of the cover and let them all feel it.

  15. I spent 6 ½ hours in the garden and it’s still not finished being planted – I need to purchase some more cucumber and cabbage and watermelon plants and some more packs of purple bean seeds. Husband will put in the potatoes and sunflowers tomorrow. I’m tired. Our neighbour also let us borrow his rototiller – so nice of him – he’s the one who ploughed our driveway for the first two winters here and comes and does it after a big storm now that we have a quad with a blade. I will pick up a nice hanging basket for them and a gift card to a nice restaurant as well. I love my neighbours. 🙂 Since husband tilled both the gardens, I think he just might be more tired than I.

  16. Daughter came over for breakfast…then we went to see the movie Mom’s Night Out…went to lunch…came home…took a nap…grilled dinner…making granola now…. 🙂
That is a beautiful photo Kare….I love watching wildlife in our area (we don’t have those things here!)…..a herd of deer came through while daughter was here this morning…she wishes she lived here! There is a den of baby foxes out on the road and I saw one of the babies trying to get back in his hole as I drove past…so cute!

  18. We had a sad day at work — a mallard duck “couple” had taken up residence outside our building in the past several weeks. We have a fountain-pool-water feature and also some tall native grasses that worked well for nesting in.

But the male was somehow injured, I arrived this morning to find several people looking at him paddling around the pool, seemingly unable to get out, and looking crooked. 😦 We got busy calling rehabs but animal control wound up coming out and taking him (they said if he were “savable” they’d pass him off to the bird rehab people). But when I called later they said he’d died, his hind end had endured some major traumatic injury. 😦 So now the female is alone — she does have a nest with eggs. A bird rehab person I know said she’ll be fine, the females carry on OK. But we do have raccoons and other predators at night there, so I’m not sure if her ducklings will survive long. 😦

    Hard world for city ducks.
