  1. I got all agitated last night after hearing on FoxNews about the Christian woman in Sudan who is going to be beaten 100 times and hanged after her baby is born. Her crime was marrying a Christian man and converting. Though she was raised by a Christian mother. Her father was Muslim. If your father was Muslim, you are Muslim and to convert is a crime.
Nobody mentioned the implications of that for our president.

  2. Good point, Chas.

According to a report in World, they are planning on hanging that woman two years after the baby is born. It is all distressing, but not surprising according to the bible.

It should cause us to pray for our brothers and sisters around the world.

  3. The two years is the time it takes to wean the child. Even fundamentalist Islam draws the line somewhere. They are actually kinder than the Romans – Perpetua was still nursing her child when she went to the arena for being a Christian; her account speaks of her fear that her son would not survive when she was killed.

  4. Excellent piece by writer Stephen Carter (of Yale) about “tolerance” in academia.

    http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2014-05-15/dear-class-of-2014-thanks-for-not-disinviting-me

” … In my day, the college campus was a place that celebrated the diversity of ideas. Pure argument was our guide. Staking out an unpopular position was admired — and the admiration, in turn, provided excellent training in the virtues of tolerance on the one hand and, on the other, integrity.

“Your generation, I am pleased to say, seems to be doing away with all that. There’s no need for the ritual give and take of serious argument when, in your early 20s, you already know the answers to all questions. …

” … Now, before I close, I would like to address those members of the Class of 2014 who might think that it’s wrong to ban speakers whose views you reject. Your reactionary belief in tolerance and open-mindedness is truly distressing. I beg you to remember that every controversial question has only one answer. You have absolutely nothing to learn from people whose opinions you dislike.”

  5. Sadly, in much of the US no one to the right of Hillary is acceptable as a commencement speaker.

Fortunately, I am today in Lubbock, Texas. Last night, my son received his MBA and tonight he will receive his law degree from Texas Tech. Last night’s commencement speaker was Kent Hance, former congressman and author of Reagan’s 1981 tax cuts of which he is most proud. Hance became a Republican in the mid 1980s. Before that he defeated Little Bush in a congressional election by reminding folks that Little Bush was too liberal and too Yankee to represent West Texas.

Tonight’s speaker is Greg Abbott, conservative Republican, Texas
Attorney General and our next governor. It makes a fellow proud to be a West Texan.

  6. Wow! Congratulations to your son, Ricky. That is quite impressive. My daughter has an MBA. To add a law degree must have taken a lot of effort and determination. I pray he uses it all wisely and gets all the opportunities to do so.

  7. Thanks, everyone. It was a fun ceremony. Abbott’s speech was great and not political. I got to put Travis’ doctoral hood on him. He is coming home to practice and will also teach youth in Sunday School.

We spent the day with family and also met many nice graduates and their parents. Lubbock is a good environment for students. It has many excellent churches.

  8. Thanks, Chas. Lubbock is much like Western North Carolina except it doesn’t have mountains or trees or flowers or grass or water. However, the culture is much the same.

  9. Congrats, Ricky. I’m glad you had a fun ceremony, b/c you won’t be doing much celebrating after the WC Finals. 🙂

I’m down in SA now, and the mood is lively in the city…
