Our Daily Thread 3-5-14

Good Morning!

Today’s header photo is from Kim.

On this day in 1750 “King Richard III” was performed in New York City. It was the first Shakespearean play to be presented in America.

In 1770 “The Boston Massacre” took place when British troops fired on a crowd in Boston killing five people.

In 1868 the U.S. Senate was organized into a court of impeachment to decide charges against President Andrew Johnson.

In 1922 “Annie Oakley” (Phoebe Ann Moses) broke all existing records for women’s trap shooting. She hit 98 out of 100 targets.

In 1934, in Amarillo, TX, the first Mother’s-In-Law Day was celebrated.

In 1956 the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the ban on segregation in public schools.

And in 1984 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that cities had the right to display the Nativity scene as part of their Christmas display.

Quote of the Day

“Ignorance is an evil weed, which dictators may cultivate among their dupes, but which no democracy can afford among its citizens.”

We have a some fine violin this morning. It’s Eugene Fodor’s birthday.

And it’s Arthur William Foote’s birthday, so here’s a piece that just sounds like Spring. 🙂

This trio does a fantastic job! “At Dusk” From TheMyriadTrio

And we get to break out some disco for this birthday, which I like. But I’m always reminded of the stupid/sad end to the career and life of this young man. Such a waste. 😦

  1. The photo is taken from the upper floor of The Caribe condos. The bridge is across Perdido Pass where the “big” boats go out into the Gulf for deep sea fishing or pleasure. The view is to the Southwest.
I am trying to tempt some of you to come visit me.

  2. Wow kind of beautiful picture, Kim. Another spot of beauty made by God and enjoyed by people.

The quote for today certainly speaks of Common Core standards.

Just wondering what people are doing about light bulbs these days? I’d rather stay away from the mercury infused ones.

I’m so unsure I’m skipping the potluck to practice beforehand.

In other news, I buried Oswald Chambers last night in my book and am feeling a bit bereft. He, of course, is still singing in glory! 🙂

  5. janice- We stocked up on incandescent lights once GW Bush signed that ridiculous law. Also, when we finally run out of those, we hope LEDs will be cheap enough. I cannot understand why our government was so stupid as to promote CFLs with their mercury. You need a Hazmat team to come to your house when one breaks. And in some places you have to pay to dispose of them. LEDs on the other hand, are basically sand, but cost a lot more to produce. Hey, Uncle Sam- you wasted taxpayer money on ethanol, why not use that money on subsidizing LED lights instead, so they can be made affordable. They last 20 years and, as far as I know, have no toxic chemicals in them.

  6. Good morning Chas.

Second soprano is hard unless there’s a bunch of you! That’s where I’ve usually landed, from high school chorus on to the church choir I was in for several years.

Ah, water. Now that’s a more familiar view to me. 🙂

The cute guys in NCIS-LA last night were rushing off to the USS Iowa where a bomber was headed to blow up the ship’s anniversary celebration. But they pronounced our town wrong and then wound up doing the shoot out over in a beach parking lot in the town across the harbor from us.

I think my dogs barely escaped being skunked this morning, I’d let them out at 5:30 and heard them barking so called them in and locked the doggie door before one of my neighbors shot them. There was the distinct smell of skunk in the outside air, but they seemed to be clear. Whew.

  7. Do places like Home Depot accept the new light bulbs when they burn out? I have to say the plus side is the long life they seem to have. But it is a pain knowing you can’t just easily discard them.

  8. Do we truly believe Americans will discard these new bulbs in a responsible manner? I don’t…and our landfills will be full of them…and mercury will be seeping into our ground water…
We have both types of bulbs and have yet to have one of the mercury ones to burn out…I suppose I will put the burned out ones in a container until I find out what to with the things! Paul loves that they save energy and costs…

  9. I really don’t want to use the mercury bulbs now that Bosley roams and rampages through the house. She did knock a lamp to the carpeted floor which had a mercury bulb and she somehow knocked off a solid heavy brass lamp that had one of the smaller chandelier type bulbs. Those were God’s miracles that the bulbs did not break!

  10. I just had this conversation with my neighbor about what to do with disposal of these new bulbs. We came to the conclusion that they will see the same fate as other things you can’t put in your trash anymore, like paint cans, oil, and cleaners. Which means it will be stuck inside a black trash bag and put out with the trash anyway. Not saying I would, but most won’t bother with the hassle of proper disposal. In fact, most people aren’t even aware of what the proper method is, since they don’t really tell you how and where to do it. They never think thru the consequences of stuff like this.

  11. I have quite a few of the mercury bulbs in a storage area and they are usable. I just don’t want them around anymore.

Can you imagine if there should be an earthquake or some other disaster how many house would have to be vacated if lamps fell and bulbs broke?

  12. That’s why they need to make disposal convenient and free — like setting something up at retail stores that sell the bulbs. We have a hazardous collection site near where I live and I take old electronics, etc., up there, but it would be much more convenient to have a bin at say Home Depot or even CVS where they could be dropped.

Off to cover a “drive-by” ashes distribution by one of our local churches at a busy intersection.

  13. Good afternoon, Chas.

More great music today, AJ. Love the Tchaikovsky — can’t help but hum along with his violin concerto. And wow, was that piece by the trio ever beautiful! All three of them looked and sounded so expressive as they played.

I Just Want to Be Your Everything really brings back memories. That hit the top of the charts in the summer of 1977, and we heard it everywhere as our family traveled west to California on vacation that year. It takes me back…do I sound old saying that? 😉

Speaking of California, or rather, Michelle, specifically…

Last night I sat down to read my Bible, and a little six-year-old bounded into the room, grabbed a book from the end table, and snuggled in next to me, opening the book to the first page and began to read.

The book? A Log Cabin Christmas. 🙂

On Sunday she had grabbed a middle school history textbook to take with her to read in the car on the way to church. I guess she’s on to adult-level Christian literature now.

Tell me why they grow up so fast. 😉

  14. We have a disposal site on the other side of town. They’ll take electronics, light bulbs, paint, and chemical too. But it ain’t free. 😦

Which is why many will take the black trash bag route. 😦

Also, they make no sense. In around 2012 they made mercury thermometers for medical use unacceptable, with many countries banning them outright because of the dangers. They’re going the way of the dodo too. But if it’s bad to have one thermometer in your house, how can having numerous mercury bulbs in the house be OK? After all, 40 light bulb in your house stand a much better chance of being broken than 1 thermometer that only comes out of it’s medicine cabinet a few times a decade.

This is what do gooder/nanny govt gets you. Contradictions, bad ideas poorly implemented, and unintended consequences. They create more problems with their solutions to problems we didn’t have. It’s twisted. 😦

A while back you mentioned your husband likes the 3 Stooges a lot, & that you once gave him a decorative plate with a picture of them on it. I keep forgetting to mention that my husband is also a big 3 Stooges fan, & I gave him a decorative plate for his birthday several years ago. It has a painting of Curly in a chef’s uniform, trying to stuff a turkey, with Moe & Larry looking on. 🙂

  20. Hate, hate, hate fluorescent bulbs. We have stocked up on the old ones, have a supply of halogen and are slowly, as needed, adding in LED. The LED are nice because they don’t get hot. Incandescent ones were nice because the did get hot, thus warming up my house 🙂

  21. Well, Kim, I suggested to my husband that instead of going to the ‘usual’ hot spots, we might want to try Alabama, Texas, or Georgia 🙂 (not that we usually go anywhere at all, but if we did…)

  22. We had a very long backyard when I was growing up, with the back portion of it fenced off with a little picket fence where there was a swing set. My dad, who grew up on a farm, always referred to it as the “north 40” and so it was always called by the family.

So I come home tonight and could smell skunk as I got out of my car. I opened the front door and pow, SKUNK.

What’s weird is neither of the dogs seem to have been badly hit (only one smelly area on the side of Tess’ head where I’ve put water & baking soda).

But the house just reeks — my favorite feather comforter also stinks and may not be salvageable, I’ll have to drop it off at the dry cleaners tomorrow. Meanwhile, I’m washing all the bedding, including the mattress pad — Tess obviously rolled around on the bed trying to get the smell off. But it’s like I can’t locate the actual source of the smell as it doesn’t seem to be that bad on Tess (and Cowboy’s clear of any skunk smell).

I have all the windows open and 3 fans blowing, hoping to air the place out before I go to bed. I’ll probably schedule both dogs for baths while I’m at work on Friday.
