Our Daily Thread 1-21-14

Good Morning!

On this day in 1789 W.H. Brown’s “Power of Sympathy” was published. It was the first American novel to be published. The novel is also known as the “Triumph of Nature Founded in Truth”.

In 1846 the first issue of the “Daily News,” edited by Charles Dickens, was published.

In 1924 Soviet leader Vladimir Llyich Lenin died. Joseph Stalin began a purge of his rivals for the leadership of the Soviet Union.

In 1954 the Nautilus was launched in Groton, CT.  It was the first atomic-powered submarine.

And in 1998 a former White House intern said on tape that she had an affair with President Clinton.

  1. Morning all. Time for some sleep here. I would appreciate prayers for my day tomorrow. It is the first day of Term 3. I will have two new students, so up to 14. We also will now go until 2:45, before Christmas we got out at noon. Usual for me is 2pm on other years, so this is an entirely new schedule for me and the class. Please pray for wisdom, strength, and creativity. Sorry for your weather Aj. It will again be in the 70’s and 80’s here in Ukarumpa.

  2. Back into the mid 20’s here. I do not like cold weather anymore. I have to hit the road early today and be in Orange Beach by 8:30. Mr P was quite ill during the night. He had chills and fever.
The news is on and it seems that the cost of propane has skyrocketed. Doubling in some areas. Makes you wonder doesn’t it?

  3. Good morning, Aj & Chas! Sorry about the weather in your neck of the woods, Aj. This is when I love living in Houston–it was 78 degrees yesterday afternoon, though today is significantly chillier (low of 34, high of 54). Having lived in Texas or Florida my entire life, I simply can’t imagine residing somewhere where it’s that cold for months at a time. I like being able to lay out in January! I know some folks can’t tolerate our summers, but I’ll take the heat over ice and snow any day.

It’s back to homeschool today. We had a leisurely four day weekend. Older daughter went with her best friend to auditions for America’s Got Talent on Sunday (only the friend auditioned). No results yet, but they had a lot of fun. Becca had a fun-filled break: a new friend spent the night Thursday (as Friday was a holiday for our local school district) and they played beautifully together; friend’s mom took them to the movies Friday morning and then invited Becca over to their house to play until late afternoon (so, I had the entire day to myself, which was so nice!); yesterday, Connie was here (our faithful nanny/housekeeper) and she took her to an indoor bouncy house place with a couple of girls who have known Becca since infancy, then they went over to their house to play for most of the day.

Of course you want a couple submarine storie, right?

A friend of mine met her husband on the Nautilus. It was a young sub then, visiting NYC and people were touring. Barb was one of them.

The handsome young officer on deck saw the beautiful model and . . . Eventually married. He became an admiral and she pretty much ran BSF in Virginia for years! Splendid people.

A friend of ours, who graduated #1 in nuke school with my husband was stationed on the Nautilus for his first duty station. She was very old then.

The engineering challenges were so great he went white in the first six months on board from stress– he was 24 years old. The tour also destroyed his marriage. 😦

My lieutenant junior grade, #2 in the class, got the next oldest boat. That’s how the Navy, unfortunately, rewards their best and brightest.

    For good reason–US taxpayer wise.

And the third story–I attended the decommissioning of the Nautilus. Everyone at Mare Island that long ago day was invited. I figured it was a moment in history. It was a beautiful, sobering, morning, sitting on the dock looking at the stripped boat.

But wonderful–the most potent method of modern warfare technology loved out its entire service life without firing a shot, a missile, in anger.

Something to be proud of in those years before the end of the Cold War.

  5. Michelle,

My wife just finished one of your books yesterday. I believe it was the Navy Seal one. She enjoyed it, and will be reading some more of your books in the future. Coming from her, who reads more than any other 5 people I know combined, that’s a pretty big compliment. 🙂

Nothing like seeing Miss Piggy in the morning to make a woman feel thankful to God even on a bad hair day.

Thanks, AJ, for all your effort to find interesting things to post.

  7. Hey, thank you very much, AJ. We learned last night that Pioneer Christmas made the Christian book best seller’s list for December, which was fun. For me, however, it’s so helpful for the proposal for the WWI book–it increases the odds of being published again.

The world needs to hear from Oswald Chambers. :-).

Meanwhile, I’m waiting to hear back if I got yet another Christmas novella contract–God is good and has a very large sense of humor.

And I loved Peter’s review of Bridging Two Hearts–made me laugh.

  8. The reporter who’s been out on maternity leave since last fall came in yesterday to clean out her desk, she’s landed a part-time spot as a public information officer for one of our local school districts. Great job for her and more flexibility so she can be come with her 2 little ones more. But not so good for us.

So — this is turning into a song — it’s one more empty desk, one more beat/several cities not being covered. No word on when (or even whether) the spot will be filled. Someday? Maybe? Don’t hold your breath? Who knows. There’s no communication, of course. I’m having to pray and literally bite my tongue these days when it comes to the way our company is being run.

  9. Thanks, Michelle. The posts were a little too new agey, vague for me. But, as I said, I am not the intended audience. I also appreciated your reply on one of my fb posts to a women who has had a lot of hurt and pain. She needs the Lord, but is very resistant. Lots of prayers going that way. It is often difficult to know what to say.

I have an acquaintance who posted a picture of the Hotel Del Coronado. She is on a vacation out that way. So, of course, I had to plug Michelle’s book. 🙂

Michelle, one of the men in my husband’s jam group was a submarine man. He shared with me a post on the USS Bart last night. It was very interesting to read the story of when they bombed a train. Quite inventive and dedicated those men were.

Enjoyed the couple singing. They are good.

  10. I was puttering around in the kitchen and found a little plastic/vinyl toy Snoopy about an inch tall dressed as a cowboy with a lasso in his hand. Leftover from sons younger days, like those raisin people, etc. It got me to remembering that when my brother and I were young that my father had a small box, maybe a cigar box, that he kept trinkets in. I believe they were Cracker Jack prizes or things from gumball machines. Infrequently my brother and I got to enjoy the contents in my father’s treasure box. Did anyone else have a similar experience? Have you kept many things such as the Snoopy toy to give to grandchildren or nieces and nephews?

So, Donna, can you recommend a good source that would be reliable? Or anyone else?

  12. Great music today, AJ — I had a smile on my face the whole time listening to it. 🙂

It snowed again yesterday for a few hours, but didn’t amount to a whole lot on top of what we’ve got left over from previous snows, which haven’t had much opportunity to melt.

Our neighbor went in the ditch today, though, and hubby had to go pull him out. Fast, young drivers, you know.

We haven’t gotten above zero yet today, but it is nice and sunny, so I think I will go out and brave the cold soon while I can still catch some rays and that good old Vitamin D.

  14. So today I had my third meeting with a real estate career coach. I am really enjoying it. The rest of this story will ask you for your opinions. Being that some of you are writers and at least one is an editor it will mean a lot to me. Even if you read a book or magazine I need to know what you think.
My next assignment, adding to the blogging is to come up with a post card campaign that I mail out to the residents of the community. The first will be on why one section of town is called Fruit and Nut, the next will talk about the history of the town and that we until the 1940’s we had a nudist colony right on the outskirts. I also have to write a 3 or 4 paragraph, real estate related story to submit to our 3 local magazines.
I am somewhat intimidated to do this. I have always said I wasn’t a writer, I could take what someone else wrote and make it better, but I couldn’t do it myself.

    What do you guys think?

  15. Janice, I have many toys that my grandchildren enjoy. I do have some of those old items, too, such as the raisin guys, from fast food meals. I know the raisin ones are worth a bit now. Little by little I give things to grandchildren when it seems appropriate. The same with books. I keep bigger toys here, so they have things to do when they are here. Some were bought just for that purpose. We all get a kick out of watching the boys play with things my daughters played with, but in whole new ways. Ways my daughters never thought of. 🙂

  16. Kim, you practice writing on here every day. You have excellent communication skills, especially in your field. No need to feel intimidated. You just have to be generous in thinking of the reader and their take-away value from what you write.

  17. These little vignettes are going on a postcard? Short, then? (Bought my postcards, btw, from vistaprints for a reasonable price).

You’ll do fine. Tell a short story and give them the history. I suppose you should end with some pitch about why Fruits and Nuts is a good place to live. (Out here in California, we’re used to that concept!) 🙂

We have an entire “giggle room” with leftover toys, paper wrappers (make great swords), and games. The adorable grandchildren head up there as soon as they get in the door when they come to visit.

  18. Love that name, “giggle room.”

Seems our house has turned into one big little (1200 sq. Ft.) “giggle room,” since Bosley joined us. I just put some chocolate chip/pumpkin spice bread in the oven and Bosley looked like she was going to jump in. Now that was not funny! 😯

  19. Fruit and Nut is a section of town where you will find Pecan St, Pomelo St. Kumquat, Orange, Oak, Pinecrest, etc. You will find dumpy little cottages butted right up against a million dollar property–which will make that dumpy little cottage worth about $250K. From Fruit and Nut you can walk to the Bay. I live on the edge of Fruit and Nut and trust me there are some fruits, nuts, and granola that live there. We were an Utopion Settlement in 1894 based on the Single Tax Theory of Henry George.

Re: The Nautilus- Last summer on our trip to New England, we planned to go to Boston, but because of rain and the fact that our hostess didn’t like the traffic there, we changed our plans and went to Groton. I really enjoyed the museum at the Naval Base, especially getting to tour the Nautilus. It helps that D3 likes the Navy since watching JAG and having a cousin in the Marines. She and her friend got a picture with the sailor at the gate. I’m sure he didn’;t mind getting his picture taken with two pretty girls. If you’re ever up there, go to the museum.

And later we went to the UConn campus in Groton and walked a little of the beach. There was a tower in town, and the others complained when I drove off the main road to find the tower. D# changed her complaints to glee when we found a park honoring a Revolutionary War battle there. Now she wants to return when it’s open. Funny thing about 18 year old girls and how fickle they can be.

  21. Janice – That reminds me of something that happened with a friend’s cat, when he was a kitten. My friend was closing her refrigerator door when, out of the corner of her eye, she barely saw movement from behind a box on the lower shelf, just a flick of his tail. She came *this close* to not seeing him at all.

  22. The young “Christian” woman I’ve mentioned a few times before, the one who has some influence on my Chrissy, but has some very unbiblical views, has escalated in her contempt (even hatred) for Republicans & conservatives.

A recent “poster” she shared on Facebook said that there are only two reasons to vote Republican – either you are rich & heartless, or you are poor & brainless. She has written much herself on what a “petty & misogynist party” they are. She recently referred to Concerned Women for America as “the most breath-takingly TERRIFYING misogynist hate group against women I can name off the top of my head.”

She recently wrote several back-to-back comments to me on a post of hers that took up nine “pages” on my computer screen (a “page” on my screen being about ten inches from the top to the bottom, & about four or five inches across, with small font). That’s just crazy! And it was almost a little scary.

  23. Oh wow.

One of my Facebook friends had shared Matt Walsh’s blog post about how not all kids need or should go to college. A friend of hers commented that this was very, very wrong, that all Christians should strive for the very best, & going to college is part of that.

I replied that we have a generation of 20-somethings with degrees that can’t get them a job, & debt they can’t pay off, & that if someone is gifted in math or science or such, then yes, encourage them to go for it, but many young people would do better to go to one of the career-training schools.

He answered with some long screed about how not wanting to go to college & take on the debt is sowing to the flesh, & whatnot.

    Then he finished with this…

“You may not agree, and if don’t, please allow me to ask you to keep silent so that others wont be influenced by bad logic.”

Can you believe that?! The absurd arrogance of that remark made me laugh.

Karen, it appears that guy is a bit of a bully wanting you to give up your freedom of speech! He is not very wise or exhibiting good stewardship. Just wondering what is his age? He is an example of what gives Christians an unfavorable reputation.

Market has broccoli, cauliflower (seasonally), carrots, celery, onions, potatoes, avocados, cucumbers, tomatoes, green peppers, sometimes asparagus, passion fruit, mangoes, pawpaw, strawberries, green beans, cabbage. They would eat more kaukau, or a kind of sweet potato. Some folks buy those to cook for dog food. They can be quite tasty, I just haven’t tried. I haven’t even eaten crocodile, though the store does carry it. Almost time for Aj to post, but I am tired after the first day of school.
