Our Daily Thread 12-28-13

Good Morning!

The weekend has arrived! 🙂

On this day in 1065 Westminster Abbey was consecrated under Edward the Confessor.

In 1732 “The Pennsylvania Gazette,” owned by Benjamin Franklin, ran an ad for the first issue of “Poor Richard’s Almanac.”

In 1832 John C. Calhoun became the first vice president of the United States to resign, stepping down over differences with President Jackson.

In 1912 the first municipally owned street cars were used on the streets of San Francisco, CA.

And in 1945 the U.S. Congress officially recognized the “Pledge of Allegiance.”

  1. It may not be THE question of the day, but it is MY question of the day.
The house I am currently living in has an old gas heating system. Down here most houses either have or have been switched over to a heat pump.
When the heat “kicks” on it is with a great and mighty whoosh, then the fan seams to make a lot of noise. I was telling some friends about it and the guy has had a lot of older homes and told me to leave the fan running all the time to circulate the heat and it wouldn’t seem to make as much noise when it cycles on.
I have always left heat pumps on “auto” and let the thermostat/ thermometer determine whether it runs or not. Opionions?

  2. Good Saturdayk morning to you, too, Chas! That would be for 1,000 Saturdays? All in a row 🙂 Sweet.

Kim, I lived in an apartment once that made that sound as the furnace cycled on. It was scary until I got use to it and knew it did not mean an oncoming explosion. It was right beside the bedroom unlike in the home I had lived in. I don’t know about leaving the fan on all the time. It wasn’t designed to be used that way so I would have no idea what parts might wear out or what it would mean for the electric bill.

  3. Today the sadness of the timing of getting Miss Bosley now begins.’Tis the day a week’s boarding must proceed. Now for the second trauma of being left in an alien environment. She is asleep in my lap now. It is almost time to go to the vets. I just petted her and the sweet purr sound began. Now I wonder if she will even know who we are after a week passes. 😦

  4. Miss Bosley will be fine. And you know she’ll be safe. I’m sure she’ll be happy to see you when you pick her up, although she may hide or act a bit timid at first — but she’ll get right back into the swing of things probably within hours after she comes home again.

I just did a story yesterday on how dog boarding places are packed to capacity this time of year; but many of those are the new generation of boarding facilities, cage-free where the dogs can run and play and even sleep where they want (24 hour staff is there) on dog beds.

One facility owner said it’s funny because they’ll find 3-5 little dogs all snuggled together in a singular “ball” on one bed — these would be dogs that didn’t know each other before they came there. So dogs have it good, there are boarding places for them that are more fun than being home, no doubt, with play times and pools and fun doggie friends.

Not really sure what the choice is in cat boarding facilities, there may be some that allow more freedom than others. But cats just aren’t as social with each other as dogs are, although I’d think a bunch of kittens would love being together.

Kim, my heater unit is below the house where there’s a large crawl space and it can make a big noise when it comes on. I’ve gotten used to it, though, and don’t even notice it anymore. Someone suggested turning the fan component only on during the summer for more air flow, but I never noticed that it helped all that much so I don’t use the ‘fan’ function without the heat.

  5. How do you deal with highly opinionated people who will not allow for discussion of opposing views?

I am not an argumentative person. I do not care to debate. Generally I just ignore these people.

  6. Kim- The “whoosh” sound is not the fan, but the pilot light igniting the gas. Even if you run the fan you’ll have the fan noise all the time, and the whoosh when the gas kicks on. As for running the fan constantly, it might actually cause you to feel colder when the gas shuts off the flame.

And I see I was crowned king of lost track last night. Mainly because I forgot it was Friday and so I didn’t post the funnies until late. So here they are again (click “the funnies”).

Then, Debra (welcome back) asked my kingly opinion on a few issues. I’ll post my responses in the news thread, since that’s where they belong.

  8. No Peter, telling me about the gas heater. Is it called a furnace? I am totally out of my element. I understand heat pumps. I do love the warmth of the gas heat though.

  9. Chas,

Sorry it took me so long to respond. The problem has been fixed. Turns out it was the ground that went bad. We re-grounded it and now everything is fine. And I was correct, it was on a completely different breaker that came down from above. Thankfully Tom knows what he’s doing. Next we’ll tackle new bath fixtures, and then new bathroom lighting. 🙂

  10. Good evening folks. Today is my birthday. For my birthday, Cindi went with me to the range. She got the feel of the S&W 44 mag with 44 special rounds. She also shot the AK. Mikael Kalashnikov died this week. :(. Cindi’s comment about the AK was: “I thought you said this think does not kick” 😆 We went to Cracker Barrel for my birthday dinner. I wanted comfort food and had a piece of carrot cake for dessert when we got home. My girls call me and so did my sister. All in all, it was a great day.

Kim- Yes, you have a furnace. Around here they are common. Some have tried heat pumps, but they don’t work too well when the temperature gets too low. They do, however, make a great air conditioner.

Correct Bob. When a mind is made up, leave it alone. That goes for both political and religious views.

But I can tell you why I believe everything I believe.

It is pouring bucketz of rain at Sea Pines. Suppose to be in the 60s witb rain most of the week. Most would find that undesirable but it suits my purposez for a working vacation. Also, I forgot to bring a heavy jacket and it looks like one won’t be needed.

  16. Happy belated birthday Joe. Come on down and I will fix you better than Cracker Barrel, although I don’t bake so you were probably better off getting carrot cake at Cracker Barrel.
Peter, I thought I had a furnace, but I live in the South so I was reluctant to say so and sound stupid.

  17. We don’t live in the South so we don’t have a furnace. Interestingly, our electric bill has gone from one hundred dollars a month to three hundred a month. Same people taking the same showers so that has not changed. Same cooking going on, so that has not changed. We heat with a wood stove so that has not changed.

  18. The power companies sometime “average” your bill based on overall useage rather than reading your meter. I ran into this a few years ago when I was literally counting pennies to pay bills. I called and called and called because I was not running the heat at all at night and very little in the daytime. I forget how I finally got to the bottom of what was going on, but I finally got someone to tell me that.

  19. In discussing issues where there are strongly-held opposing views: What’s frustrating to me is this growing trend to assign the worst possible motives and broad-brush those who disagree with them. I’m thinking here, of course, of the ongoing gay marriage issue in which people are commonly dismissed as “bigoted” or worse because they believe marriage should be between a man and a woman.

Just yesterday on FB someone I know posted a poster that said something like bigotry “wrapped in prayer” is still bigotry. And this posted by someone who considers himself open-minded, I’m sure. But really, this tendency to “debate” by demonizing and slandering your opponent makes me crazy.

If you can’t debate on the premise that both sides are at least sincere and well-intentioned (if, in your mind, misguided), what’s the point?

    Like

  20. Kim, that happened to me last month (the bill actually said the meter hadn’t been read but the charges were estimated based on my average usage for that time of year). I forgot about it until you mentioned it — and I’ve already paid the subsequent bill, I’ll have to go back and see if there’s any notice on there about the meter or “averaging.”

But do they make it up somehow — say if you actually used a lot less in October this year than in October last year? I was going to call about it but forgot to follow up.

  21. Hmm, my heat pump doesn’t do air-conditioning. Unless you count the cool night breezes. On the up-side, I don’t have an electric bill either! 🙂

  22. I managed to hack off several people in my life yesterday. Even the people I was trying to agree with.
I have decided that I would just like for Sarah Palin to quietly go back to Alaska so that she cannot be the other side’s fall back position. I am tired of George W. Bush being equated with the anti-Christ and hearing that he should be shot or worse for “crimes” he committed as President.
I am tired of meeting the other side half way on the abortion issue and saying that we should keep it legal so we can have the conversation on why you shouldn’t have one. I was told my statement made no sense at all.
I finally told one of them that it was impossible to have a conversation with them because they got up on their high horse, talked over anything anyone else had to say and gave no one else a chance to get a word in edge-wise.
I think I am about to get real closed minded. It is part of my passive agressive tendencies. Continue to tell me how wrong I am without letting me voice an opinion and I will just shut up and go around you.

  23. Kim, I know it isn’t always possible, but it’s best to avoid toxic people. They don’t want to learn anything, they want to prove that you’re wrong. And you will be wrong, no matter what.
You also can’t go half way with them.
The Republicans have been going half way with the Democrats for years. That’s why it took so long to get into this mess.

  24. I also cannot stand the hate the Left/Liberals hurl at Bristol Palin. She was a teenager. She made a mistake. She had a child. It isn’t the child’s fault. Talking about the Bible saying she should be stoned really serves no purpose. Do we want to go back to calling children from these situations “b”s and treating them like second class citizens. I am not willing to do that. I am often reminded that people who live in glass houses should not sling mud nor rocks. I have a 16 year old daughter and until she is married she could find herself in the same position as Bristol Palin–a teenager who makes a mistake.
Now if this is the daughter of a “liberal” they either have an abortion or have the child. No one slings mud at them, but they can’t extend the same curtesy to a young woman on the right?
We have our own Karen her with her beloved grandson. Have any of us Christians suggested that she should beat her daughter over her head for the rest of her life for committing the sin of living with R and having a child? I admire them for closing the family circle and making sure that a young boy has a happy and loving home.
I have another friend whose daughter recently gave birth to a child. She and the father together made the decision to give the child up for adoption. My friend handled it with grace. She told everyone what her daugher had done and how much she admired the two “kids” for making the hardest decision anyone could make, that of giving their child a better home.

  27. Kathaleena, and I don’t think some of them realize that when they say or post things that call folks bigots (if they disagree with the opinion that gay marriage is just a splendid idea for the advancement of society) that they’re thinking of the individuals they know (and even like) who fall into their “bigot” category. But I find it offensive when folks broad-brush everyone that way, just assuming that their motives are dastardly — rather than seeing that there could be an honest disagreement and that there’s no need to demonize others.

Liberals are known for doing this, BTW, which I find so interesting.

Our pastor is gifted when it comes to having in-depth and respectful dialogues with those of other beliefs, he’s carried on a number of relationships through the years with atheists and others, always staying friendly and being careful to genuinely listen to what they’re saying. He thoroughly enjoys the give and take and it’s hard for me to believe that anyone could walk away angry with him.

Our church is preparing to host a conference (3 days) on the end times in late January and our pastor is seeking a premillennial voice for a debate as part of the program which will be interesting to attend, I’m sure. Our pastor knows his topic thoroughly and expresses his ideas persuasively, but with respect and clarity. It truly is a gift. Our goal as Christians, he always says, isn’t to rudely browbeat the other guy into submission so you “win” the argument.

  28. Donna I would like to attend and talk about the pre-millenial view. However, I am a heritic inour church because I don’t believe in a pre-trib rapture. I believe in mid-trib, or pre wrath rapture. That’s the only doctrine that the Bible supports.
The Bible clearly teaches about a millenium. So, Amillenialism or Non-millenialism is unscriptural
There is not scriptural foundation for post-millenialism. And the world situation also argues against it.
The pre-millenial rapture of God’s people, “immediately after the tribulation of those days” (Matt 24:29) is the only position supported by scripture.

Unfortunately, I know that not to be true with at least a few people I know (in real life, not only online) who have let me know that they think I am a bigot & intolerant. And that was after gently stating my case (after trying to avoid getting into the subject), & even writing about my own tolerance (the fact that I love the gays in my life, have hosted them in my home, & treat them as I would treat anyone else – with respect & love).

One of those people is supposedly a fellow believer. 😦
