Our Daily Thread 12-16-13

Good Morning!

We’re down to single digits people!

9 Days Until Christmas!

On this day in 1773 nearly 350 chests of tea were dumped into Boston Harbor off of British ships by Colonial patriots.

In 1835, in New York, 530 buildings were destroyed by fire.

In 1901 “The Tale of Peter Rabbit,” by Beatrix Potter, was printed for the first time.

In 1944, during World War II, the Battle of the Bulge began in Belgium.

And in 1972 the Miami Dolphins became the first NFL team to go unbeaten and untied in a 14-game regular season. The Dolphins went on to defeat the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII.

This one is a request, since it’s his birthday. A Beethoven Christmas montage.

This one takes a long time to sing. So they sped it up a little. 🙂

And this one is because I like it. 🙂

  1. Good morning everyone. See you later, no time to chat.
    As radio operators, we would tap out CULOM (See you later old man), even if it was a woman on the other side.

  2. okay, tomorrow I am flying back into your day!! I would listen to the music, but I don’t think that the walls in this hotel are very thick. More on the prayer thread. Flying on a wing and a prayer.

  3. Please say a prayer, rub your lucky rabbit’s foot and cross your fingers and toes…It looks like we are going to close the Brown’s house this afternoon at 2:30. The Brown’s need nothing as a closing gift but they are in an assisted living apartment, so I thought I would get them a small Norfolk Island Pne with a few decorations on it.
    The closing agent at the Title Company has bent over backward to help and accommodate so I thought a poinsettia would be nice for her. I am sure she doesn’t get many closing gifts.

    For those of you who saw photos of my Christmas tree and my packages–Mrs. Brown is the one who taught me to do such things. In her younger years (priors to the last 5) Christmas decorations went through the entire house. There were everyday Christmas dishes, there were decorations in the bathrooms, the tree was a sight to behold and the packages all had an ornament or some other gift decorating them as well as the gift inside. It is a shame was dementia has done to her. She always was a spitfire, but now she is just plain mean and miserable.
    Mr. Brown is still the same mentally, his body is just wearing out on him. I would love to see the two of them twirl around a dance floor one more time, but at least I have the memory. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers had nothing on those two.

  4. Apparently the guy who played Billy Jack died and some people on facebook are talking about it. Now I have “One Tin Soldier” stuck in my head.

  5. So New York burned in 1835, but we never hear about the “Great New York Fire”. Is that because the 530 buildings were inconsequential compared to the ones that burned in Chicago 40 years later?

  6. Good Morning….and thanks for sharing that story Kim….what a beautiful start to the morning…there really are some good people in this world…two AJ’s…well, three counting the one who started this blog!! 🙂 Praying for your closing to go smoothly this day!

  7. I forgot to thank Cheryl for her thoughtful response to my question the other night.

    Kim – My mom decorated every room, too, although Dad was in charge of the tree. Especially when the granddaughters were young, her house was like a Christmas Wonderland.

  8. Going back to what had sparked my question, R’s controlling attitude with Emily, a few examples…

    If she was at our house for more than an hour, he would call or text several times, pressuring her to go back home.

    If she wore make-up or dressed up, he accused her of wanting to flirt (or worse) with other guys.

    If they were having a meal which could be eaten in different ways (as meatloaf can be eaten as part of a meal on a plate, or as a sandwich), he would insist that she eat it the way he was eating it, even if she wanted it a different way.
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    It was quite surprising to me, & others who knew Emily well, that she would put up with him. She had always been very independent-minded. When she started wearing a bit of make-up again, that was the first sign to me that she was breaking away from him. A few months later, she was back home. 🙂
  9. More snow in the forecast. Yay. I guess the 8 inches Sat. into Sun. weren’t enough.
    I still made it to the game. 🙂
    But it was like watching Army all over again. 😦
    But I did get to try out my new camera on some live shots and try out the zoom too. I got some nice ones. But it still would have been nice if they scored.
  10. Karen, those are classic examples of a controlling abuser. She is lucky to be away from him and lucky she isn’t raising her son to be just like him. I know I sent you the link to the Charmer/Abuser before.
  11. Q of day: What does the busiest day of this season look like for you? If you had to remove one thing from your agenda, what would it be?
    I try to avoid the crowds of shoppers by going at off times. As an introvert, that really helps me. I also try not to overstuff myself on food so I won’t suffer the ill effects of over indulgence. It helps to go by K.I.S.S. when possible and avoid people who have unrealistic expectations. I think it helps that most of my friends are not wealthy so K.I.S.S. is about the only thing tbey can do.
    Do you know anyone who climbs up in the trees to gather mistletoe? Not simple, but can lead to a kiss!
  12. QoD: my busiest days will be work related, as I now have to do the year end for our payroll as well as the inventory. I will be working late several nights this week, but if I do that then I don’t need to go back to work until January. We’re off to my folks on Saturday, so the late nights will also involve trying to get last minute laundry and packing done as well. We try to shop at non-busy times as well, but living out of town, we have to shop when we’re there anyways. The stores were NOT very busy this year. It may have been the severely cold weather, but Sunday was warmer and still not very busy. It’s nice to know that all that has been done. Just some gifts ordered from Amazon to come – should be here any day now.
  13. not my busiest at all, but certainly one of the longest as I fly and fly and it is still Tuesday when I land. Just a very long day, but, as someone said, the rewards at the other end are more than worth it. 🙂
    I certainly was glad that I had been working out, when I had to haul my luggage so many places yesterday.
    It was hard for me last night. I asked a security guy at the airport, at 10:30 pm, if it was safe to walk to my hotel. He said yes, this is Sydney, so I did. In some ways it was very scary, since I would never walk alone outside in PNG at night, and to even have all my luggage and valuables with me. That’s what you call culture shock!
  14. Just in from shopping with my daughter after I got an unexpected day off. Here’s the secret for good service: have a pretty college girl run interference!
    It was pretty crowded most places and lots of traffic; I’m thankful for how much I got done. But I find myself pondering several things.
    1. What should my reaction be to a woman covered in colorful tattoos, wearing ‘creative” clothing, pierced all over her face and carrying a dog into the store? She looked, frankly, like a circus character. She also was parked near me and as I pushed my cart past, I noticed a large bumper sticker telling me not to judge.
    So, was I judging when I stared at a garish character out in public and breaking the law by having a dog in Target? If she didn’t want people to look at her, why was she dressed in such an outlandish fashion and with such painful looking items sticking out of her face?
    It’s been cold here (though beautiful today), why wear a tank top to expose all those colorful tattoos if you didn’t want gawking?
    Okay, I’ve searched my heart and I think I’m more perplexed by her than judging her (what would I be judging her about other than breaking the law by bringing a dog into the store?). I have several perfectly reasonable, lovely 20-something friends who have multiple tattoos–which I think look awful. Both have expressed this thought, “I’m addicted to getting tats. I get one and I want another.”
    Why?
    I guess I should ask them.
    Is it like piercing?
    I don’t know.
    2. My other thought was to wonder if we have turned a corner and have now become a two tiered nation of the haves and have nots. I watched a middle aged man dressed in a pizza slice costume stand on the corner twirling a sign. Is the only type of work left? Physically being used as a sign for fast food?
    Are we the only people who see these economical incongruities? Someone commented to me the other day that since President Obama took office, the average American has lost 1/3 of their net worth, whether through housing losses (which did, indeed, begin under the Bush administration), cash for clunkers, and a host of other things. It’s disturbing to me that the best we can do for so many is make-shift jobs that don’t pay a living wage by themselves.
    But, my grandchildren now have Christmas gifts. I guess that’s something. 😦
  15. So how much does the pizza-slice-costume job pay … ? Hmmm. 😉
    Meanwhile, I’ve joined michelle in password hell, spent a good portion of the day on the telephone trying to figure out what my mac’s “administrator” password is/was.
    No luck, and the apple guy on the phone was going to charge me $20 to give me the answer. But he said I could go to the apple store and, if they could figure it out in 15 minutes (which he said they could), it’ll be free.
    So I guess I’ll do that one of these days.
    Soon, probably. It’s preventing me from printing anything, since I locked my printing preferences on the computer. 😦 😦 😦
  16. We sort of closed today. All documents were signed. Checks were not released. I will pick them up in the morning and take to the Browns. I enjoyed my time with them, but after three hours at the closing table they were exhausted and worried about getting back to assisted living in time for dinner.
  17. I’m leaving in a little while to go to the annual dog park Christmas gathering 😀 No dogs, just people.
    But since I have to return to work tomorrow, I won’t be staying very late.
  18. It is strange how you get to know people’s dogs’ names … and not always the owners’ names. 🙄
    Scooted out after 3 hours, I still had my dogs to walk and I probably ought to get to bed somewhat early tonight. I’m also feeling sniffly, but not sure if that’s our extra-dry weather or another cold coming on.
