Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks- Week 13

Here ye, here ye!

’Tis Rivalry Week in the realm of the college gridiron. All over the nation, football fans will don the colors of their chosen team, and trash talk anyone in the opposing team’s gear. Orange and Blue Tigers will face a Crimson challenge. Other Tigers will face Raiders and Roosters. Trojans host Bruins; Wolverines take on some Nuts from Ohio. Sun Devils try to burn Wildcats that took down not-so-mighty Ducks. Hawkeyes face Cornhuskers. Boilermakers visit Hoosiers.  Rebels take on Bulldogs. And the Gators will try to make something out of a dismal season while hosting the #2 Seminoles. Most of these are in the same state. Most don’t care what happens during the rest of the season, as long as they win this game.

And you get to guess the winners in the ten rivalry games below. Trash talk all you want, but remember, this is a family-friendly blog.

 1. #1 Alabama @ #4 Auburn – This is the Civil War of the South. They even sabotage trees in this one.

  2. #2 Florida State @ Florida – Normally, this is a big game. For Florida it is. For FSU, a loss would take them out of the national championship. Yeah, I guess it is a bog game.

  3. #3 Ohio State @ Michigan – How do you take a team named for a nut seriously? Michigan does.

  4. #21 Texas A&M @ #5 Missouri – Not a major rivalry, but the two teams that went from Big 12 to SEC play an important game for both of them.

  5. #6 Clemson @ #10 South Carolina – Chas has been mentioning this one all year. Now it’s here.

  6. #22 UCLA @ #23 USC – The I-10, PAC-12 game of the week. Hey, in what other game does the “visiting” team get penalized for wearing their home jersey?

  7. Iowa @ Nebraska – What is a Hawkeye? I lived and Iowa and can’t answer that. But Iowa grows a lot of corn. Will they get husked in Lincoln?

  8. Ole Miss @ Mississippi State – Why is the University of Mississippi called “Ole” Miss? They don’t act like elderly spinsters on the field.

  9. Purdue @ Indiana – A dismal year for Purdue. I’m not calling this a pillow fight, but how often is Purdue worse than its cross state rival?

 10. Tie Breaker: Arizona @ #12 Arizona StatePick winner and score. After last Saturday, anything could happen in this one. And it often doesn’t matter what either team’s record is, they both want this one big. But ASU has more to lose by losing.

Play on, fans. Just get your picks in by Thursday 7:30 PM EST, when the two Misses play. Don’t “Miss” out.

  1. 1. #1 Alabama to promote family harmony. This one is hard. Husband and former husband are big Alabama fans. Niece attends Auburn and now BG has decided that is where she would like to go to college

    2. #2 Florida State in honor of my stepsister Toni. Toni died last year after living 53 years with Down’s Syndrome. They were HER Seminoles

    3. #3 M ichigan –

    4. #5 Missouri –

    5. #6 Clemson – Chas has been mentioning this one all year. Now it’s here.

    6. #22 UCLA – In honor of Michelle
    7. Nebraska –
    8. Ole Miss – Nothing good in my life has ever come out of Mississippi State, but my goddaughter’s mother graduated from Ole Miss.

    9. Purdue –

    10. #12 Arizona State 35 to 21

  2. Here goes, for what it’s worth. “shock:

    1. Bama has to beat Auburn.
    2. Florida State, thought I hate to see it.
    3. Ohio State
    4. A&M. Somebody has to beat Missouri.
    5. Gamecocks will beat them Tigers. Have you noticed I’m getting against Tigers all the way?
SC has a 17 game home field winning streak. Clemson has lost only one game, to the Seminoles, this year. They have a 4-game losing streak against the Gamecocks. Both teams ranked in the top ten. Clemson is out for blood. It will be interesting.
    6 UCLA. Though I don’t know why.
    7 Nebraska over Iowa
8 Mississippi State. I was depending on the Rebels to down Mizzou last week and they let me down. And the Dawgs can move the ball.
    9. Purdue. I have to choose the Boilermakers, though they have been a disappointment all year.
    10 Arizona State 21, Arizona 7.
And last, though by no means least: Boise State over New Mexico.

  3. My picks:
Auburn – Take no offense, Crimson fans. But I am a teacher in a public school and there needs to be equal opportunity for others. So Alabama cannot play for a third national title.
FSU – Not a game that interests me, but I doubt Florida can pull off a major upset after losing to a Div 1-AA team at home last week.
Michigan – the Nuts are over rated. Again.
Mizzou-RAH – How could I pick a team from Texas over the team from my adopted home state? Besides, I look forward to seeing Mizzou play for the SEC title.
Clemson – Sorry, Chas, but the Tigers eat the Gamecocks in a close one.
UCLA – A toss-up in my book. But, like some of the women, I like their colors better. (USC has the same colors as Arizona State, ‘Nuff said.)
Iowa – Gotta go for the team from Mrs L’s home state. In fact, she grew up within 20 miles of Kinnick Stadium. Too bad the game’s in Lincoln.
MSU – Only because it’s the home team, and my alam mater had a Bulldog as mascot. (Bulldog forever.)
Purdue – I couldn’t see Chas being disappointed at the outcome of two games on the same weekend.
Arizona 28-27 – I could never say ASU is going to win, even if UA is 0-11 and ASU is 11-0. Just ain’t gonna happen. And after last week- anything can happen.

  5. Thank you Peter and AJ for stirring my interest in the Pigskin games. It actually helped me have a little something extra to discuss on the phone with one of the acquistions editors I am talking with about my children’s book. Previous to doing this blog I did not keep up with football enough to know who was winning and losing. So you have helped me appear to be a little more intelligent to a Yankee than we Southerners are known to be. 🙂

  8. Yes, Mumsee. We’re missing your picks. Every week you say “Go Boise” and make no other guesses. At least you’re guessing one game.

But this is Rivalry Week, and Boise is playing New Mexico. Is that the big rivalry for Boise State? Is the University of Idaho that bad at football that Boise doesn’t play them?

  9. Yay! Idaho! Was that the Vandals or Boise. Because Boise is the other Idaho. We root for them when we don’t get to root for the real Idaho.

  10. My guys hung eighty points on Idaho last week. I was there and there was no attempt to run up the score, but I still felt like a bully…

  11. Mumsee- the de facto drinking age at most colleges is 18, unfortunately. And the game I mentioned above was the Vandals winning against Temple.

  12. Interesting insight by Todd Ellis on the Carolina/Clemson football game. Todd Ellis is a Carolina Hall of Famer whose win and scoring records were broken last week by Connor Shaw. Ellis broadcasts the play-by-play for the Carolina games. His day job is an attorney. He had attended a fundraiser, and visit to a children’s hospital. The article was about the visit.

I hope to feel the same when I watch my Gamecocks play with speed, power and poise tomorrow in an inconsequential football game.

  13. I guess since Arizona has more than 17 points, you could say Tychicus won. But it’s not over yet, so I won’t declare an official winner until later.

Gotta say that there were some exciting endings to today’s games, especially the Auburn touchdown at the gun.

Next week: The conference championships. But it looks like only 5 of them have championship games, and two of those are from conferences that won’t make a difference in the BCS. I’ll see what I can do for the last week, unless we want to end it with the Army-Navy game on Dec 14th. How about that one being a guess the score to win, since it will be the only game that weekend?

Looks like the Tigers play the Tigers for the SEC championship.
I don’t have a horse in that race, but I expect the Tigers to win.
Two amazing finishes for Auburn; two weeks in a row.
Clemson has a good team. They can really move the ball. I know it’s a disappointment for them. Five straight losses. And everyone on the SC team is likely to return except Clowney and Shaw.
Shaw broke the old Games won, Passing yards, and touchdowns record from Todd Ellis, but he may not be our best quarterback. Though he did lead the team from behind to victory in Columbia, (Mo.) 😆

  15. Well, I made a mistake. The final score of the tie breaker was 58-21. Tychicus had 8 correct and guessed the score as 37-31, or 31 points off (21 off ASU, 10 off Arizona). On the other hand, Aj also had 8 correct, but was closer to the tiebreaker, guessing a score of 35-17, or 27 points off (23 off ASU, 4 off UA). So, I hereby declare our gracious host, AJ as the winner of the 13th PPPPP contest. AJ- here is you Virtual High Five!

  16. Chas, I hate to say it, but I will be rooting for the Auburn Tigers in that game. If Ohio State loses to Michigan State, Auburn is the best chance of keeping the championship in the SEC.

  17. I don’t root for Tigers of any stripe. Auburn had a streak of luck in two games straight.
They shouldn’t assume on beating Mizzou. Those guys can move the ball.
