Our Daily Thread 10-21-13

Good Morning!

On this day in 1797 “Old Ironsides,” the U.S. Navy frigate Constitution, was launched in Boston’s harbor.

In 1858 the Can-Can was performed for the first time in Paris.

In 1879 Thomas Edison invented the electric incandescent lamp.

In 1917 the first U.S. soldiers entered combat during World War I near Nancy, France. Nah, too easy. 🙂

In 1967 thousands of demonstrators marched in Washington, DC, in opposition to the Vietnam War.

And in 1983 the Pentagon reported that 2,000 Marines were headed to Grenada to protect and evacuate Americans living there.

  1. Good morning, all! The house is quite chilly this morning. The thermostat said sixty. I am the one in our family who does not turn the furnace on until later in the season. Partly because I am the one who pays the bills and I like the bills which reflect low utility usage. Also, by letting the house stay on the chilly side it helps to cut down on bugs and critters that seek a warm place. By the time we turn the heat on they have all found warmer abodes.

Evening Chas. Just finished doing close to 100 account transfes as I handle the English Service offering. Now tomorrow I need to get the funds transferred to the individual.
I remember touring Old Ironsides and I simply couldn’t figure out how they could possibly fit all those hammocks below decks. Very crowded conditons.

  3. In the states I fly standby since my son works for an airline!! That is an incredible blessing. Try cheaptickets.com or expedia.com I spend a lot of time researching tickets when I come home. After I check cheap tickets to find the lowest price, then I go check out the lowest priced airlines home page for more info.

  4. Our house is cold too. I actually had to scrape ice of my wife’s car before she left this morning. I would have turned the heat on except the gas company is upgrading the line in. Everything has to be off, so I saw no sense to firing it up and bleeding the radiators until they’re done. They’re out front jack hammering my sidewalk right now. It’s really loud. 😦

  5. Rich Mullins October 21, 1955 – September 19, 1997. He died in a car accident. When he went into the ministry of Christian Music, he had the elders of his church manage his income. He only wanted to receive a salary commensurate with a common everyday man. He had a 10th of the income go to his church, the rest he had go to Native American Ministry’s. He loved the Children of the Native American Tribes and wanted them to have a decent education and a chance to better themselves. I personally loved the song he sang Oh God, you are my God.

  6. Good Morning All. It was cool enough to sleep with the windows open last night. Of course this meant that I heard the big ol’ clangy garbage truck roll through the neighborhood this morning.
We are planning to move this coming weekend. I am overwhelmed by the thought of it. As you know this isn’t like me. In the past I could pack up and move on a dime. Not this time. I have packed a lot of stuff and the boxes are stacked on and under the dining room table, but there is still a lot left. 3 of Mr. P’s friends are coming to help with the heavy stuff.

I am sure a lot of you have gotten an email or have seen on Facebook that Ajisuun’s father is in the process of his body shutting down. I am sure many prayers are being said, but just in case you didn’t know…

  7. We received a dusting of snow overnight….it is 23 degrees here this morn….yep…our heat has been on for a while now 🙂
Thanks for mentioning Ajisuun’s father Kim…I didn’t know….they will be in my prayers…nothing can prepare you for the emotions of walking this part of the journey….

  8. Anyone else having problems on Facebook? I keep getting errors when trying to like, comment, message, or even post status this morning.

  9. nancyjill, we have about an inch this morning with it still coming down. Not expected to stick around long, however, which is good as we still have piles of leaves on the lawn to be put on the compost. Our heat has also been on lately although just enough to warm the house and we don’t have to add wood all day like we do during the winter. The new siding looks very nice in the snowy setting 🙂

MiM, that is one gorgeous plate. I’m assuming you made it?

  10. Yes, MIM, I wasn’t on long, but couldn’t do much.

Off to a colonoscopy this morning; so fun! Being done by an old friend.

Here’s a QoD: Have you or would you see a doctor who is also a friend?

  11. Thanks Kare,

Yes I did make that plate. Turned wood about 10-1/4″ diameter. It’s Beech wood, pyrographed front and back with a similar pattern created by yours truly.

  12. OK, now we have no water. The gas crew hit my next door neighbors line with the backhoe, so it filled the hole in the street with water. The water company had to shut off the whole block. 🙄

No heat, and now, no water. Greaaaaat……

We’re out of here for a while. See ya’s later.

Well, unless they hit the gas line next and blow up my house. 😯

But I’ll try and remain optimistic.

Qod……our family doc is a close family friend of 25 years…..he gets to listen to my heart…look in my ears and down my throat….hit my knee with his little hammer….and listen to me kvetch about my ailments….but that’s it!! I have other docs to whom I go for maintenance of other body parts
    🙂

  14. MiM,

I’m not on Facebook much, but sure. Send me a request.

And I love the plate. Now, I’m gonna need one a bit bigger, and maybe raise the center instead of recessing it too. That would make an extremely cool shield. Now how are you with making wood swords to lay across it for me?

And maybe a family crest in the center. I don’t have one at the moment, but I’ve always wanted one. 🙂 I’m sure I could come up with something…..

That would look very nice on my wall. 🙂

  15. Not on FB but on Linked-In. I don’t do anything there, though.

QoD: We have a friend who is our family physician. But when we try to make an appointment at his office, he calls and asks what is wrong. If it’s something that doesn’t need an office visit he tells us, and calls in a prescription if need be. His wife is also a doctor, though she stays at home with the children. It is convenient for Mrs L to talk to her about female issues, then get him to call in scripts.

took the Americans only three hours to get home. This seems unfair.”

I have a neighbor who is a doctor, but he practices in Florida. He comes here for the summer. Floridians don’t get sick in the summer.

I’m not on facebook. I was for a day and a half. I think I’m on Linkden because I keep getting e-mail. But I don’t know what to do with it except delete the mail.

  18. Janice’s question (“How do you go about finding the best rates for airline tickets?”):

I haven’t ever needed to fly, so I can’t answer that question. 😉

Adios’ QoD: I haven’t seen a doctor who was a friend, but I wouldn’t hesitate to do that.

Facebook: No trouble for me with that today, or any other day, because I’m not on it. 😉

  19. I haven’t been her today because I’m counting up all my gold bars to buy my retirement horse ranch …

Just kidding, as you all well know. 😉

Yes, despite feeling like a truck had run over my head this morning when I got up, I managed to get myself into work. Had to come back to the community to cover a school program at the local theater where Al Gore was being Skyped in live, talking to about 900 high school students about his 24-hour Climate program live stream that starts Tuesday.

But that meant I was able to get out to the dog park again late today after filing the story remotely from home. One of our real estate guys there was telling us about clients (an older couple) who bought a house in one of the beach communities in 1961 for $15,000 — it’s now worth $1.5 mill — and are looking to sell it to downsize to a condo. 🙂 Now that was a good investment, although $15,000 in 1961 probably seemed like an awfully lot of money.

So now it’s off to walk the dogs — I actually have bounced back, I think, but I sure felt lousy this morning for a little while, completely stuffed up again and head throbbing. Oy.

That was a cold on steroids.

  20. Anyone is welcome to ‘friend’ me, too, on FB — I always love having more Christian friends!

I’m on Linked In and didn’t do much with that until maybe several months ago when I began to realize it would be a handy tool should I need to job hunt someday again (and I think I was also motivated when I saw a job listing that indicated you could apply via your Linked In profile, which I thought was so much easier than the whole resume thing).

  21. Very instructive, Donna. Thank you. Would that we would learn the lessons of history before they are repeated.

I watched a video today with interviews of college students, graduates of the public school systems of a few different states, who were asked questions about the Holocaust. The dearth of knowledge the vast majority of them had on the subject was sobering, to say the least. And it’s not because they weren’t bright, articulate kids. They simply had been taught little to nothing about the Holocaust.
