Our Daily Thread 10-12-13

Good Morning!

It’s Saturday! Yay! 🙂

On this day in 1492 Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, sighted Watling Island in the Bahamas.

In 1792 the first monument honoring Christopher Columbus was dedicated in Baltimore, MD.

In 1892, in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the Columbus landing, the original version of the Pledge of Allegiance was first recited in public schools.

In 1933 John Dillinger, bank robber, escaped from a jail in Allen County, OH. The sheriff was killed by his gang as they helped Dillinger escape.

In 1933 the U.S. Department of Justice acquired Alcatraz Island from the U.S. Army.

And in 1938 filming began on “The Wizard of Oz.”

Today is the birthday of Luciano Pavarotti. So here he is with a guest, doing a different style of music than his usual.

But don’t worry, I’ve got another, more his usual style.

For those who don’t speak Italian, (like me) the lyrics in English are here.

And it’s also Michael Roe’s birthday. So here he is, with Phil Keaggy.

  1. Good morning//evening all. Had a very restful day and then took a brisk 1 1/2 mile walk. Beautiful out, but by 6:30 it is usually dark.
Fun at school yesterday. we discovered a sinkhole on the playground, 4 to 5 feet across. I guess we have had some rain this week!

  2. Only Jo so far on a Saturday? I woke at six, turned over for a minute and it was after seven. This happened before this week. Unusual for me. I had a terrible dream about my car being towed in a strange city and I couldn’t discover where it eas.
Maybe that goes on the rant thread.
Hi Jo. just you and me so far.

  3. I read the. end of yesterday’s thread and saw the comments about diet soda. At one point I started drinking some diet Coke and Pepsi because that was what others in the office drank. Previously I had not liked them, but I quickly developed an enjoyment of them and felt they were more addictive than the sugary drinks. I don’t drink them anymore. I know they are bad for people.

  4. AJ, it was just Jo & me when I started typing. Besides, it’s a given that you are first. But you may have gone for breakfast, so far as we know.
That’s what happened between my last post and now.

  5. I didn’t get in on the diet soda discussion. I don’t drink a lot of sodas as a rule, but a long time ago I looked around the various restaurants and discovered that it was FAT people drinking diet sodas. I didn’t want to be fat so I didn’t drink diet sodas. I was being what I thought was funny. Little did I know I was on to something!
I drink and eat REAL food. I buy butter not margarine. I buy ice cream not frozen yogurt. I buy sugar or stevia. I eat eggs not Eggbeaters. If you read the labels on “diet” foods they have to make up the flavor somewhere and often that is by adding sugar. I don’t by “lite” anything.
For a treat I buy LaCroix sparking water in a can. I can buy a 12 pack for about $4. I either drink it straight or mix it with some fruit juice. I have decided to start making iced tea again, but haven’t done it yet. I drink too much coffee, but at least I drink it black.

Today I am making pot roast. How do you make or like your pot roast? I am looking for inspiration here. The last time I made pot roast was at Mumsee’s so it isn’t a routine occurrance around here.

  6. Like Kim, I eat real food, when I can. However my weight problem has been the other way. I was always a scrawny kid. Every woman wanted to put meat on my bones.
But I hear that sugar addiction can be as bad as tobacco or alcohol. The end result is probably not as bad. But not good either.

  7. I don’t drink much diet soda, I ‘nurse’ maybe a bottle, sometimes not that much, spread out over two days at my desk along with water, usually no soda on weekends. So I don’t think I’m addicted. 😉 But sometimes a cold, fizzy diet coke really does hit the spot.

I woke up early for some reason today but that was good, I used the time to get the dishes done which I should have done last night before I went to bed but didn’t.

Just saw on fb that a friend had to rush one of her dogs in for surgery this morning, some kind of eye issue (‘luxating’ lens??). Friend & her dogs are well-known on the national dog agility circuit, they’ve won a slew of ribbons and trophies.

  8. I just got home from Sam’s and Kroger. I decided to get an assorted pack of the Ice brand flavored water that someone in the office likes. I also splurged and got the more expensive whole sheet Bounty paper towels for the office for a coworker who always makes that request. We have not indulged in that luxury lately so a few bucks more to make someone happy is worth it once in awhile. Also bought real Kleenex brand tissues instead of Member’s Mark as I would have done for just my husband and me.

  9. Kim, when I do pot roast I just cook it a long time in the crock pot seasoned with Mrs . Dash and some Nature’s Seasons. I put in some onions and carrots and maybe some potato chunks. I don’t even brown the meat first as is suggested. Once I did a really good pot roast in a cooking bag that had a sauce which may have included a bit of ketchup. It was in a cookbook that came with my old Kenmore microwave/convection oven. It had a wonderful flavor . You may be able to find it on line. I would look for a link, but I am on the Smart Phone and don’t often often have success with copy and paste.

  10. 6 Arrows or someone asked a few days back about making lists. I use to do that. I need to again. I was not very prepared for the trip to Charlestown. I failed to bring the final address where we were to get on the dinner cruise. We were right in the vicinity but I could not seem to retrieve the email with the location so I had a momentary meltdown. My husband can not do anything on the Smart Phone because he always hits the wrong keys and gets angry about that. So I was doubly frustrated. Add to it that there was a race for charity in the area so lanes were blocked or we were driving behind the slowest runners at the end of the pack. It is funny looking back on it, but if I’d had a chair in the car I would have joined with MIM in chair throwing.

  11. I also drink the carbonated water with or without juice. If I add juice I am careful about the amount. It is easy to overdo on juices. One of the cheapest places to get that water was at Menards, which is similar to Lowes or Home Depot, if you don’t have it in your part of the country. The carbonated water does go on sale at various places. Kroger has some good prices on the plain. Still, I do not understand why the carbonated water is more than most soda or pop as we say here. Just because, I guess. 😉

I like to do a chuck roast or arm cut roast. I use an old Betty Crocker Cookbook recipe. A mixture of flour, salt and pepper is rubbed on the outside. It is then seared in a small amount of oil on both sides. A good crust keeps the moisture in. After that a cup of water is added to the meat; it is covered tightly and cooked in a 3:25 for four hours or so.

I add potatoes and carrots into the pot for the last hour. My husband likes onions, but not in this, so I don’t add them, but many others do. I also have added frozen or fresh cauliflower or broccoli. I will add it whenever I think it will be tender for the meal.

After taking everything out, I make a roué and make gravy with what is left in the pot. This is a good recipe for a cheaper cut of meat that needs to be tenderized. It is great for left-overs, too. I make enough potatoes for more than one meal. The meat and gravy are good with bread, too, for those who like that.

In the summer I will do a crock pot version, since I do not want the added heat of the stove.

  12. Speaking of food that’s bad for you, I was talking to a couple women at the dog park this week when one said she never let her kids drink milk. The other woman asked what they put on their cereal. “Oh, I NEVER allowed cereal in the house.”

Is it just me or have we become weirdly food-obsessed? Now milk and Cheerios (and, gasp, a bit of sugar) may not be the best breakfast. But in moderation/eaten every now and again, is it really the deadly concoction so many people make it out to be??

Which reminds me of something I read in the past week or so — it was in a Christian piece about the sin of gluttony and the author suggested that our culture’s sometimes extreme obsession with weight, calories, what foods are good and what foods are bad (organic good, processed evil), also can easily fall into the category of gluttony (in the sense that it is a state of mind in which we become obsessed with our stomachs, as it were).

Like many of you, I’m a believer in getting back to “real” and healthier foods. More raw vegetables and fruits, less refined sugar & ‘fake’ foods. Practicing it is harder than preaching it, of course.

And even that can be taken to the extreme.

  13. I agree totally, donna. Even diet foods have their place. Not everyone is bothered by any of those substitutes. If you are, drop them from your diet. Just don’t assume it for everyone.

I know lots of people who should be dead according to all the experts. I recently heard of a man (married to an old friend) in the prime of his life who died shortly after crossing the finish line in a marathon. He was meticulous about his diet and exercise and did everything ‘right’.

All things in moderation and done unto the Lord. Than lets enjoy His gifts of food with praise and thanksgiving.

  14. Good balance, kathaleena.

The stridency surrounding food these days is annoying. 😉

As for milk, I know a lot of people can’t tolerate dairy and I appreciate that. But some of us are fine with it — and, believe me, I drink very little milk. I have to look for the longest expiration date possible on most everything I buy, including milk, and even then I may end up dumping the last of it because I didn’t consume it in time.

These women I was with at the dog park kept saying how “disgusting” milk was, which I’d never heard before. !? 🙄

(And when I said I used milk in small amounts, mostly for coffee — which I don’t drink every day — the one woman said “Oh, I NEVER drink coffee.”)

    I couldn’t win in that conversation. 😉

  15. Think back to when you were a child. How many overweight people did you see? I am convinced that our obsessions witth fat free and sugar free and this and that and everything else is what is making us fat. Eat real food unless you are a diabetic or have some other REAL not self diagnosed health issue and a doctor or nutritionist tells you to go for the diet stuff.
I know lots of people who are lactose and gluten intolerant. I think probably 25 to 50 percent really are and the rest are just on the band wagon.
I also find it disgusting that if I go into a convenience store when I am out on the road a bottle of water is 1.50 or more and a bottle of V8 is almost 2.00 but a bottle of Coke is 99 cents. Yeah, that makes a whole lot of sense. If I were a mother on a budget and had a couple of thirsty children along with me what choice to you think I would make.
I am also on a rant about people bringing coffee, bottles of water and NOW RED BULL into church on Sunday mornings. It’s an hour and a half people. Could you not do without something to drink for an hour and a half????

  16. Pot Roast + Crock Pot = Yum.

Just add carrots, potatoes, and onion, and season to taste. It doesn’t get much easier. Or better tasting. 🙂

I’ll use butter when making certain things, but a substitute most of the time. We use Brummel and Brown, it’s made from yogurt. It’s OK, but you’re not fooling anyone. I haven’t tasted one yet that could. 😦

I still add sugar to coffee and I do like the sweets, in moderation of course. Mostly.

What I do eat that’s low fat is only ‘cuz the Dr. said I need to. I mostly use skim milk, fruit instead of a candy bar, skip the bacon, stuff like that. But soda is a big one for the bad triglycerides so I guess I’m better off with water, hence the switch.

  18. Pastor Roy, Christians Talk or Christians’ Round Table would be nice. The Lord’s Table seems like it should be reserved as special words denoting communion, but maybe I am alone in that opinion. I hope your mention of the possible titles was an invitation for expressing opinions.

  19. I like Christian Chat–that sort of invites others to participate. Also, chatting with each other sounds better to me than getting a talking to…if that makes sense. I like the imagery of all of us being gathered at God’s table one day talking to Him like a family does, but I agree with Janice that the Lord’s Table should be reserved for communion. Now, there is a name The Communion of Saints (all Christians by definitiion are Saints) Or it could be the Communion of Saints and Sinners and those somewhere in between…but I have rattled on long enough.
I hope it goes well for you Pastor Roy

  25. Good evening, all.

Kim: I make pot roast fairly frequently. I follow the recipe on the back of Lipton Onion Soup Mix and everyone raves about it. In my opinion, it’s super important to brown the meat well, forming a crisp, brown, outer layer before adding the water. At first, I kept draining off all the oil after browning the meat, then the meat would seem too dry. Now, I leave a little of the oil in the pan after browning, add water and seasoning and cook in a heavy pot over low heat for 3 and a half hours. About forty-five minutes before it’s done, I add the potatoes and carrots. I add the onions while browning the meat (but sometimes leave them out as my youngest doesn’t like them). Wish I was at your house tonight!

Roy: Good luck with your new blog! I hope it’s a rousing success!

I must admit to being somewhat of a diet Coke addict. I know it’s not good for me, but I do love it so. I’ve recently cut back quite a bit, but still drink 2-3/day.

My older daughter has another horse show tomorrow. Becca had a very successful play date today with a new friend from her acting class. They invited her for a sleepover Sunday as Monday is a holiday here in Texas. She is super excited! I’m so happy for her, especially since she’s been dealing with the group of mean girls at school.

That meal was an old favorite from when were couldn’t afford meat that often. We serve it over rice with steamed cabbage. And actually, the cabbage is what gets the curry, the lentils are cooked separately. We only have it now when there are none of the children here. D3 went to visit friends with her cousin.

  28. It was an early and long day, all of us but 1st Arrow heading out the door earlier than most of the kids wake up most days, and traveling to visit relatives, returning almost 13 hours later. We had one tired, crying young boy for most of the ride home; just too much for him by the end of the day, though he did well the rest of the day.

It’s been more than 15 hours now since he got up this morning, so he should really go to bed, but instead of having him go to bed soon after he got home, Hubby invited young son to come out to the garage with him. That is always a blessing, as it’s a good way for 5th Arrow to decompress when things have gotten a little rough.

Hubby and 5th Arrow have such a close bond, and after a while I could hear the laughter of a young boy who was clearly enjoying time with Dad.

    God is good.

She had knee surgery Friday. I went to Fresh Market and took her some freeze dried okra—DO NOT BUY THIS FOR YOURSELF. It is highly addictive. The only reason I bought it for her is that she can’t easily get to a Fresh Market to buy it for herself. I had to scurry Mr. P in and out quickly before he saw too much. We were in long enough for him to find some pretzel covered peanut butter things dipped in chocolate. I had to make him swear not to go back by himself!
Then, because I have never been to Lambert’s he suggested we go there for a late lunch/early dinner. I brought most of my meal home. Between 1 and 1/2 fried pork chops, pickled beets, potato salad, black eyed peas, and left over pot roast I think we will be OK for the next day or so. Of course I am thinking I may never eat again!
