Our Daily Thread 10-9-13

Good Morning!

On this day in 1635 Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island, was banished from Massachusetts because he had spoken out against punishments for religious offenses and giving away land that belonged to the Indians. Williams had founded Providence, Rhode Island as a place for people to seek religious freedom.

In 1781 the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War took place in Yorktown, VA. The American forces, led by George Washington, defeated the British troops under Lord Cornwallis.

In 1855 Isaac Singer patented the sewing machine motor.

In 1872 Aaron Montgomery started his mail order business with the delivery of the first mail order catalog. The firm later became Montgomery Wards.

In 1888 the public was admitted to the Washington Monument for the first time.

In 1919 the Cincinnati Reds won the World Series. The win would be later tainted when 8 Chicago White Sox were charged with throwing the game. The incident became known as the “Black Sox” scandal.

In 1963 over 2,000 people were killed in northeast Italy when the Vaiont Dam was overrun by water. The incident was caused by landslide that occurred behind the dam.

And in 1974 Oskar Schindler died in Frankfurt, Germany. Schindler is credited with saving the lives of about 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust.

Quote of the Day

“John F. Kennedy asked us what we could do for America. This Democratic Party asks what can government give you. Don’t worry about paying the bill, it’s on your kids and grandkids.”

It would be John Lennon’s as well.

And this song was released today in 1979.

  1. I responded and then the blog told me I had to log in, so I did, and then it could not display the web page. Is this rigged?
Aj, you are always first, don’t you know? We just fight to be second to you!

  2. “The firm later became Montgomery Wards.”

When the company I worked for 20 years ago was bought by Montgomery Ward, we had it drilled into us that it was Montgomery Ward, with no “s”. In a Q&A session with some execs from our new parent, a long awkward silence ensued when my co-worker asked a question about “Monkey Ward’s”.

Doesn’t seem to matter much now.

  3. Then, of course, years later Wards was bought by Mobil Oil, where my father worked for 40 years. I remember shopping with him at Wards once when he presented his work ID to get the employee discount. The clerk asked him if he could get a discount at a Mobil station and my dad said, “You get the same discount we do – zero.”

  4. I tried to log in earlier, like Jo. But I saw this “Anonumous” thing. So I started to change it. Then it wanted me to log in. I couldn’t get the password right, so I left for the Y.
    Les’t see what happens here.

  5. It worked this time. I had to log in, but it asked me if I were Charles, then the password was already there. I should have counted the dots to see which password it used. I had a hard time earlier; so I quit and went to the Y.
My wife always adds an “s” to the name of the store. Penny’s, Belk’s, Hecht’s, etc.

  6. Chas, glad to hear that it wasn’t only me this site didn’t like.

I don’t know which thread to put this on, but I am truly concerned about our country. The forces of evil seem to be strong right now. I should put this on the prayer thread because looking at the little I can see, we need to be praying mightily for our nation. Please join me as you feel led to pray.

  7. Lucille Ball was probably the funniest person in the world. It worked well because she was also rather attractivel. Not a beauty buy good looking.
I had seen the routine several times before. Always funny. It reminded me of Hadicol. You may not remember Hadicol. It was a mixture of stuff, but mostly alcohol. It was supposed to cure everything. It didn’t cure anything, but after a couple of doses, you didn’t care.
    I never took Hadicol.
Somebody wrote a song called “Hadicol Boogie”.

  8. Good morning. I’ll join you in prayer for our country, Jo. We had a prayer for our country Sunday in church, as we do from time to time, but I was really thinking I should be doing more praying, personally, for this country and our leaders. Thank you for the reminder.

  9. It is interesting that Roger Williams is mentioned today. Roger Williams was a Welsh Baptist. Baptist’s have long held to the principal of “freedom of conscience” that is the freedom to worship God as your conscience dictates. A lot of people may not realize that Christianity was in Brittan long before the Catholics arrived in 500 AD. According to the Welsh Bards, one of the family members of Priscilla and Aquila were brought to Rome from Brittan after Claudius Conquered Brittan. That Gentleman became a disciple of the Apostle Paul. He carried Christianity back to England. The Welsh bards also record that the Welsh Christians refused to accept Baptismal Regeneration and Infant Baptism when the Catholic Bishop arrived in Brittan.

The only other colony that guaranteed freedom of conscience were the Quakers in Pennsylvania.

  10. Interesting post, drivesguy.

I wrote a long prayer in my prayer journal this morning including prayer for our nation/leaders? and also for Israel and Netanyahu. They all need God’s wisdom.

  11. Just scheduled for a “real IT guy” to come Friday morning to work on a problem that TigerStop says needs a “real IT guy” to work on.

And this is after I’ve jumped through lots of hoops, bought new PC, built a protective cabinet (with cooling fans and filters), put the whole mess in the shop and plugged it directly into the TigerStop controller via serial port cable.

When it didn’t work as promised, that’s when I started getting the song and dance about how I needed to get my IT Administrator to set things up correctly… Being the IT administrator, I didn’t take too kindly to that remark, and started yelling at the (third for the day) tech support guy. That was just before I slammed the phone down, and broke a chair across the work table. Didn’t fix the problem with my attitude or the software… for some reason.

Keep in mind, I’ve only been trying to get this software to work with Win7 for a couple weeks.

Yeah. I’m not a happy camper.

I think I need to find a real job.

  12. I agree about our nation’s need of prayer. It is a daily thing here and also something our church does regularly and sets aside a time for during the week.

I worked for a large department store years ago. We received no discount. I once returned an item and my name was added to a box of cards that were kept for suspicious returns. I suppose they suspected an employee may be stealing. I had no idea they kept such a record. I was disgusted with a customer who regularly returned children’s jackets after they wore them for months. Apparently, she wasn’t listed on a card in the box. That department store no longer is in business.

  14. Good Morning, Y’all!
My sister worked at Montgomery Ward for a while. They had her in Appliances and she had the same experience daily…a man would ask her to find someone that worked in appliances. They could never believe that she knew what she was doing. She probably knew more about washers and dryers and dishwashers than any of the men that worked there!

  15. I’m concerned, too, about the nation. It just seems like we’re almost at a breaking point and that it wouldn’t take much to push us over (into what, I’m not sure, but the news about the trucker demonstration this weekend made me somewhat uneasy — any gathering of large numbers of angry people in this climate, I fear, could spark violence).

What do you do for an earache? It’s not something I ever get, but I seem to have one this morning. Is there something a quick cure I can get at the pharmacy without having to go to the doctor?

Maybe some Hadicol. 😉 Or not.

  16. When I go to the local Lowes for plumbing needs, I always look for the gal who probably forgot more than I know about plumbing. I ask for her over any of the guys there.

If a woman is better at something or knows more than I do, I’m not threatened by it, I take advantage of it.

There’s a reason my wife does the finances at home… The house and two cars are paid for, and I don’t owe any money. Now if I could just find a job that paid about three times what I make now for doing less. 😉

  17. As for the chair incident, the boss told me that the chair was coming out of my paycheck, and then laughed… It helped. 😀

He totally understood how frustrating it was, because he can no longer process the output files from his desk. I have to go out to the shop and process them at the machine now.

  19. Donna, I agree with you about the danger of all the hostility in this country. There are those who would love to see some mob violence. They would love to have a scapegoat to point at and it needn’t be the true instigators. People need to be careful and prayerful!

  20. Are the people with log-in issues still having problems?

I really don’t know what it could be. Are you trying the log-in on the right column under Meta, or with the little W feature under the comment box?

  21. I never have issues with log-in here because I don’t have to log in. I just type a comment, and my email and “6 arrows” are already listed below the comment box on any computer I’ve used before. Then I click “Post Comment” and it goes through. I don’t click on the W feature or the Log-in in the sidebar. Is it always necessary for those of you with gravatar pictures to use Log-in? Or does that have nothing to do with it?

My earache went away all on its own.

After walking the dogs tonight I came home and my network connections were out (internet, tv, phone). I spent about 20 minutes unplugging and re-plugging the modem, nothing. Called tech support. Another unplugging and re-plugging in fixed everything. Oy.

This is turning into another busy week for me, lots of stories, and a few later-than-usual nights again. 😦

But we got some rain today — not enough, but some. And the first snow in our local mountains.

I’ve actually been using my car heater on the drive home both last couple nights driving home from work. (Need to get the rear taillight bulb replaced now, though).

I also put the warmer feather-filled comforter on the bed.

  25. While the tech guy was trying to troubleshoot the problem (and clearly began grasping at straws), he asked me “Did you notice any wires that were cut outside your house?”

Huh? Well, no, I really didn’t do an inspection of my outdoor wiring when I came home from work tonight! 😀 Too funny.
