Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks- Week 4

Sorry, Kbells. Auburn isn’t playing this week. But something new this week: The Pillow Fight of the Week, in which two of the FBS (Div. 1-A) with the worst records go head to head the see who can actually win a game. This week we go to Idaho for a match with two winless teams: Temple at Idaho. And also, the team with the longest losing streak visits Idaho to play Boise State! That’s right, Southern Mississippi joins the fun in Idaho this week, bringing its 15 loss streak with it. I’ve also included three games involving Top 25 teams playing against each other, as well as both Army and Navy.  Lots of upset possibilities this week.

#12 South Carolina @ UCF — For Chas.

Navy @ Western Kentucky — For us Navy fans. Say it with me: Go Navy…!

Wake Forest @ #3 Clemson — Wow! A Tiger team in 3rd that isn’t Auburn or LSU. What’s this world coming to?

#6 LSU @ #9 Georgia — Speaking of Tigers, how about a Cat and Dog fight?

#14 Oklahoma @ #22 Notre Dame — The Sooners go North. Maybe they can win in South Bend as payback for last year when the Irish won in Norman.

Army vs. Louisiana Tech — For AJ. Say it with me folks – Go Navy…! 😉

#21 Ole Miss @ #1 Alabama — For Kim. Should be a good game to watch, except I’ll be watching something else (see below).

Southern Miss @ Boise State — For Mumsee. So the Broncos can play on Saturday.

Pillow Fight: Temple @ Idaho — All the losers in Idaho. Two will win.

Tie Breaker: Arizona @ #16 Washington Wildcats vs. Huskies. Another Cat and Dog fight. And on national TV!!! Thank you FOX for letting me see my Cats play!

Good Morning!

On this day in 1777 Philadelphia was occupied by British troops during the American Revolutionary War.

In 1789 Thomas Jefferson was appointed America’s first Secretary of State. John Jay was appointed the first chief justice of the U.S. Samuel Osgood was appointed the first Postmaster-General. Edmund Jennings Randolph was appointed the first Attorney General.

In 1908 Ed Eulbach of the Chicago Cubs became the first baseball player to pitch both games of a doubleheader and win both with shutouts. 😯

In 1960 the first televised debate between presidential candidates Richard M. Nixon and John F. Kennedy took place in Chicago, IL.

And on this day in 1962 “The Beverly Hillbillies” premiered, in 1964 it was “Gilligan’s Island”, and in 1969 it was “The Brady Bunch.”

Prayer Requests 9-26-13

Who has a request or praise to share today?

Psalm 43

¹Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation: O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.

For thou art the God of my strength: why dost thou cast me off? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.

Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

News/Politics 9-26-13

What’s interesting in the news today?

First up today, someone notes the obvious bias in the treatment the filibustering Cruz has gotten from the media when compared to Wendy Davis.

From Politico Sen. Ted Cruz has been speaking on the Senate floor for almost 19 hours, as of this post. The talk is not technically a filibuster — he can’t actually block the Senate from going about its business — but symbolically, it’s more or less the same thing. The point is to show one’s opposition to something through a demonstration of physical will.

Which is why you can forgive conservatives for being upset with the mainstream media’s coverage of the Cruz affair. When a Democrat like Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis filibusters against abortion restrictions, she is elevated to hero status, her tennis shoes become totems. When Cruz grandstands against Obamacare, he is a laughingstock in the eyes of many journalists on Twitter, an “embarrassment” in the eyes of The New York Times editorial board.

“Gee I wonder why NYT and WaPo and everyone else gave ecstatic coverage to Wendy Davis but not to Ted Cruz. I just can’t make sense of it!” John Podhoretz, the conservative columnist, tweeted on Wednesday morning.”

Was that sarcasm? 🙂

_________________________________________________

The usual suspects are all wound up over Ted Cruz’s behavior. Several have shown their true colors. McCain being the most obvious.

From WeaselZippers  “UNREAL: McRINO Backs Dems On Senate Floor After Cruz Filibuster, “The People Spoke” And They Want Obamacare – Update: Chuck Schumer Thanks McRINO For His “Outstanding Remarks”…

Yeah. Sad. And what polls has he been looking at? From day 1 the majority has been against ObamaCare.

_________________________________________________

Senator Durbin seems to say a lot of stupid things. Here’s Exhibit B, also from yesterday.

From CNSNews  ” Questioning Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on the Senate floor Tuesday, Sen.  Dick Dubin, an Illinois Democrat, explained why he’s proud to have  voted for Obamacare.

He told the story of a chambermaid named  Judy who works “at a motel that I often go to,” and who will benefit  from Obamacare because she is so poor: “The good news for Judy is that  her income is so low that she now qualifies for Medicaid for the first time in her life,” Durbin said.”

Yes, you read that right. She’s lucky she’s poor. Wow. A face palm smiley would be perfect here, but I have to settle for this. 🙄

_________________________________________________

But in a way he’s right, even if he is a condescending jerk about it. She is lucky, she won’t get what most of us will get. Higher premiums.

From Forbes  “For months now, we’ve been waiting to hear how much Obamacare will drive up the cost of health insurance for people who purchase coverage on their own. Last night, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services finally began to provide some data on how Americans will fare on Obamacare’s federally-sponsored insurance exchanges. HHS’ press release is full of happy talk about how premiums will be “lower than originally expected.” But the reality is starkly different.”

“Earlier this month, I and two colleagues from the Manhattan Institute—Yevgeniy Feyman and Paul Howard—published an interactive map that detailed Obamacare’s impact on individually-purchased health insurance premiums in 13 states plus D.C. As the accompanying article described, Obamacare increased premiums in those states by an average of 24 percent.

But those states were largely blue states that had set up their own, state-based insurance exchanges. The big data dump that we’ve been waiting for, since then, is from the majority of states that didn’t set up their own state-based exchange. That data is the responsibility of the Obama administration, namely HHS. Finally, with less than a week to go before the exchanges are supposed to go on-line, HHS has released a slim, 15-page report and a press release that summarize some of the premium data.”

“Former Congressional Budget Office director Douglas Holtz-Eakin agrees. “There are literally no comparisons to current rates. That is, HHS has chosen to dodge the question of whose rates are going up, and how much. Instead they try to distract with a comparison to a hypothetical number that has nothing to do with the actual experience of real people.”

_________________________________________________

Next up, this is why I’ve said in Libya and Syria, if you aid the so-called rebels, you aid our enemies. Or stuff just gets “stolen” by the bad guys while the other rebels look the other way.

First one is on Syria, from TheBlaze  “Recent images from the front line of the Syrian war suggest that terrorists are enjoying the small comforts of U.S. equipment and supplies that are meant to aide legitimate rebels, who are part of the Free Syrian Army. This appears to prove all the concerns among U.S. lawmakers and analysts that aid to the Syrian rebels could end up in the hands of Al Qaeda.

The photograph allegedly shows Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) linked Commander Muhajireen Kavkaz wa Sham, along with other rebels dawning battle-gear and an RPG, inside a USAID tent.”

_________________________________________________

The second is Libya, from FoxNews  “The recent theft of massive amounts of highly sensitive U.S. military equipment from Libya is far worse than previously thought, Fox News has learned, with raiders swiping hundreds of weapons that are now in the hands of militia groups aligned with terror organizations and the Muslim Brotherhood.

The equipment, as Fox News previously reported, was used for training in Libya by U.S. Special Forces. The training team, which was funded by the Pentagon, has since been pulled, partly in response to the overnight raids last August.

According to State Department and military sources, dozens of highly armored vehicles called GMV’s, provided by the United States, are now missing. The vehicles feature GPS navigation as well as various sets of weapon mounts and can be outfitted with smoke-grenade launchers. U.S. Special Forces undergo significant training to operate these vehicles. Fox News is told the vehicles provided to the Libyans are now gone.

Along with the GMV’s, hundreds of weapons are now missing, including roughly 100 Glock pistols and more than 100 M4 rifles. More disturbing, according to the sources, is that it seems almost every set of night-vision goggles has also been taken. This is advanced technology that gives very few war fighters an advantage on the battlefield.”

It wouldn’t be shocking to find that this is what was actually stolen from the CIA’s gun running program at the embassy on 9-11.

In 1882 the first major league double-header was played. It was between the Worcester and Providence teams.

In 1957, 300 U.S. Army troops stood guard as nine black students were escorted to class at Central High School in Little Rock, AR. The children had been forced to withdraw 2 days earlier because of unruly white mobs.

And in 1981 Sandra Day O’Connor became the first female justice of the U.S. Supreme Court when she was sworn in as the 102nd justice. She had been nominated the previous July by President Ronald Reagan.

Prayer Requests 9-25-13

Who can we pray for today?

And it’s Wednesday, so please remember to pray for The Gambia and the folks ministering there.

Psalm 41

¹ Blessed is he who considers the poor; The Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.

The Lord will preserve him and keep him alive, And he will be blessed on the earth; You will not deliver him to the will of his enemies.

The Lord will strengthen him on his bed of illness; You will sustain him on his sickbed.

I said, “Lord, be merciful to me; Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You.”

My enemies speak evil of me: “When will he die, and his name perish?”

And if he comes to see me, he speaks lies; His heart gathers iniquity to itself; When he goes out, he tells it.

All who hate me whisper together against me; Against me they devise my hurt.

“An evil disease,” they say, “clings to him. And now that he lies down, he will rise up no more.”

Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.

10 But You, O Lord, be merciful to me, and raise me up, That I may repay them.

11 By this I know that You are well pleased with me, Because my enemy does not triumph over me.

12 As for me, You uphold me in my integrity, And set me before Your face forever.

13 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel From everlasting to everlasting! Amen and Amen.

News/Politics 9-25-13

What’s of interest in today’s news?

Sen. Ted Cruz began filibustering over ObamaCare funding yesterday. In fact, as of 6:15 AM this morning, he still was. Sen. Harry Reid is not happy, and would like to remind you it’s not a real one, it just looks and sounds like one. And “Green Eggs and Ham” was the perfect reading selection for an ObamaCare related filibuster. Like the man said, “We do not like it Sam I am”.

From WeaselZippers  “Cruz Begins “Talking Filibuster,” Vows To Speak “Until I Am No Longer Able To Stand” – Update: Harry Reid Whines: Your Filibuster Isn’t Real – Update: Enters Third Hour – Update: Dingy Complains, This Is “Fake” – Update: Reads “Green Ham And Eggs” On Senate Floor – Update: Passes 7 Hour Mark – Update: 8 Hours And Counting…Update: Approaching 16 Hours, Still Going!

And it’s not just Dems and ObamaCare he’s being critical of.

From TheWashingtonTimes  “In his remarks, he repeatedly took aim at fellow Republicans, urging  them to  join him in voting against limiting debate on a stopgap spending  bill that also  defunds Obamacare. Many Republicans said they will vote  along with Democrats to  proceed with the stopgap bill because as of now  it contains the defunding  provisions.

Mr. Cruz, though, said it is certain Democrats will be able to strip  the  defunding provision with a majority vote later in the process, so  the only  chance to exert influence is early on, when it will take a  60-vote threshold to  even proceed with action.”

_________________________________________________

The House GOP is offering another solution.

From Politico  “The House Republican leadership is seriously considering attaching a one-year  delay of Obamacare’s individual mandate to the Senate bill to avert a government  shutdown, according to senior GOP aides.

If House Republicans decide to go this route, it would all but provoke a  government shutdown, since Senate Democrats might not even schedule a vote on a  bill that includes that provision, Senate leadership staffers say. Even if the  Senate schedules a vote, there might not be time to move the legislation through  the slow-moving chamber.”

Here’s an interesting read on the US terrorists involved in the mall massacre.

From YahooNews  “A heated debate has erupted among Somali refugees in the U.S. over the slaughter of civilians in the Kenyan shopping mall, highlighting what U.S. intelligence officials fear is fertile recruiting ground for Islamic jihadists.”

“When the conversation turned to Kenya, the room erupted in debate in a smattering of broken English and Arabic dialects between the men playing cards and sipping tea on ramshackle furniture.”

“”Al-Shabaab is not just recruiting young Somalis in the U.S. Also around the world,” Abtieon said in an interview outside the din of his arguing countrymen in the market’s back room.”

__________________________________________________

Bob Beckel has had a stunning moment of clarity. Perhaps some on the left are starting to wise up.

__________________________________________________

The same can’t be said for major US print news sources. Not surprisingly, they won’t point out the obvious, or the relevant facts. That wouldn’t be politically correct.

From NewsBusters Dare a top newspaper journalist to play connect-the-dots and chances are  he’ll fail miserably – at least with drawing the line between Islam and  terrorism. In Nairobi, Kenya last weekend, Islamist militants took over a  high-end shopping mall and began executing non-Muslims. In Pakistan, Islamist  suicide bombers detonated at a Christian Church on Sunday.

Yet on Monday, September 23, 90 percent of the top ten (via  circulation numbers) daily newspapers’ headlines in the United States  censored the words “Islam” and Muslim” from Nairobi and Pakistan reports. One –  the New York Daily News – didn’t even have a headline for the latest Islamic  terrorist attacks. That’s journalism at its finest.”

__________________________________________________

Looks like Obama and Kerry have a backdoor route to their gun control utopia in mind.

From TheHill  “Secretary  of State John Kerry is expected to sign an arms trade treaty opposed by the  Senate and the gun lobby as early as Wednesday, and Republicans aren’t happy  about it.

Kerry’s plan to sign the treaty on the margins of the U.N. General Assembly  in New York this week has sparked immediate criticism from GOP  opponents.

“This treaty is already dead in the water in the Senate, and they know it,” said  Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services.  “The Administration is wasting precious time trying to sign away our laws to the  global community and unelected U.N. bureaucrats.”

_________________________________________________

This one I only have one comment on. It’s about time.

From TheWashingtonTimes  “House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has no  Catholic right to be  granted Communion, said the leading cardinal of the  highest court at the  Vatican.”

“That’s canon law, not opinion, he said. Canon 915 states that  Catholics who are stubbornly contrary “in manifest grave sin  are not to  be admitted to Holy Communion.”

And Cardinal Burke said Mrs. Pelosi fits   the definition.

“Certainly this is a case when Canon 915 must be  applied,” he said,  the Western  Center for Journalism reported. “This is a person who  obstinately, after  repeated admonitions, persists in a grave  sin — cooperating with the crime of  procured abortion — and still  professes to be a devout Catholic.”

On this day in 1789 the U.S. Congress passed the First Judiciary Act. The act provided for an Attorney General and a lower federal courts.

In 1869 thousands of businessmen were financially ruined after a panic on Wall Street. The panic was caused by an attempt to corner the gold market by Jay Gould and James Fisk.

In 1934 Babe Ruth played his last game as a New York Yankee player.

In 1957 President Eisenhower sent federal troops to Little Rock, AR, to enforce school integration.

In 1960 the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier was launched. The USS Enterprise set out from Newport News, VA.

And in 1968 “60 Minutes” premiered on CBS-TV.

Prayer Requests 9-24-13

Who would you like us to pray for today?

Psalm 40

¹ I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry.

He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.

He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.

Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie!

You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.

In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted, but you have given me an open ear.Burnt offering and sin offering  you have not required.

Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me:

I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”

I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O Lord.

10 I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.

11 As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain your mercy from me; your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me!

12 For evils have encompassed me beyond number; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head; my heart fails me.

13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me! O Lord, make haste to help me!

14 Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether who seek to snatch away my life; let those be turned back and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt!

15 Let those be appalled because of their shame who say to me, “Aha, Aha!”

16 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, “Great is the Lord!”

17 As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God!

News/Politics 9-24-13

What’s interesting in the news today?

First up, a story of heroism during the terrorist attack in Kenya.

From TheDailyMail  “An off-duty member of the SAS emerged as a hero of the Nairobi siege yesterday, after he was credited with saving up to 100  lives.

The soldier was having coffee at the Westgate mall when it was attacked by Islamists on Saturday.”

“He is said to have returned to the building on a dozen occasions, despite intense gunfire.”

__________________________________________________

Next up, once again things are missed, and the results are deadly for the victims. And again the Obama admin should be called to task for the influence these groups have on American policy, and within their own ranks.

From TheDailyCaller  “The Council on American Islamic Relations repeatedly tried to stop a  Minnesota community leader from warning about the dangers al-Qaida-linked group  posed to the Somali-American community prior to the Kenyan mall massacre.

“I tried to warn America,” Abdirizak Bihi, a Minnesota-based Somali community  leader, explained to The Daily Caller.

Minnesota residents were reportedly among the attackers in the grisly  assault by al-Shabaab terrorists on the Westgate mall in Nairobi, Kenya. The  Twin Cities are home to the largest Somali community in the United States.”

“But he told The Daily Caller the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR)  has blocked his efforts for years, telling law enforcement agencies by telling  them that he doesn’t know the Somali community and calling him “an Islamophobe”  in a recent report.”

__________________________________________________

The Obama admin would like you to know that his foreign policy in Africa is working. Wait… What? 😯

From TheHill The president said the United States stands with Kenya against the “terrible  outrage” that saw al Shabaab’s Islamist militants kill at least 69 people in a  high-end shopping mall in Nairobi. He later joined in a moment of silence at the  United Nations.

“We are confident that Kenya, which has been a pillar of stability in eastern  Africa, will rebuild,” Obama said. “But this, I think, underscores the degree to  which all of us, as an international community, have to stand against the kind  of senseless violence that these kinds of groups represent. And the United  States will continue to work with the entire continent of Africa and around the  world to make sure that we are dismantling these networks of destruction.”

The attack has raised new concerns about al Shabaab’s tenacity despite  administration claims that Somalia is now a success story.”

““The fact of the matter is we’ve actually had a very aggressive effort to go  after al Shabaab in Somalia, both through direct U.S. counterterrorism efforts,  but also through support for AMISOM, the international force, including Kenya,  that has pushed al Shabaab out of a number of its strongholds in Somalia,”  Rhodes told reporters traveling with the president. “And, frankly, I think it  was that pressure on al Shabaab that, in terms of their own professed  motivation, led them to pursue an attack against Kenya.”

So relocating terrorists is a considered a successful anti-terrorism policy? All they did was just make them someone else’s problem. Here and abroad, their anti-terrorism methods are failing. Maybe it’s the company they keep?

__________________________________________________

Which brings us to this, the company they keep….. The DC has another story out that is my recommended reading for today. This story exposes CAIR for the terrorism supporting outfit they are, and how they go about it. Sadly our Attorney General turns a blind eye to their criminal behavior. It’s an indictment of CAIR, but also our DoJ and White House. After all, they allow and even encourage it, while allowing the criminals to call the shots. They are breaking numerous federal laws, allow foreign govts to fund their efforts, and file false tax documents. And make no mistake, those efforts are successful and have borne fruit for the radicals. That’s why the MB and CAIR hold such prominence in this administration.

From TheDailyCaller  “Since its founding in 1994, CAIR has presented itself to American Muslims and  the media as a single organization centered on American concerns. But it shows a  different face to the IRS, with multiple corporate entities that conceal the  large financial donations that come to CAIR from Middle East sources.

As a registered lobbying group, CAIR is required to report to the IRS  contributions over $5,000. Its shifting 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) branches,  however, make it possible to collect millions of dollars from oil-rich  Muslim nations without disclosure. Documents show CAIR has received millions of  dollars in overseas contributions and tens of millions in pledges from  overseas.”

““In addition to violating its 501(c)(3) regulations, CAIR’s undisclosed and  hidden foreign donations amount to violation of the Foreign Agent Registration  Act as well,” Reaboi continued.”

““According to both the letter and spirit of the law, this is illegal as  CAIR is avoiding disclosure of foreign sources of funding to a 501(c)3  (CAIR-F),” Reaboi explained to TheDC.”

__________________________________________________

Next up, Lois Lerner is getting her taxpayer funded retirement. Her payback from her handlers.

From FoxNews  “The Internal Revenue Service says an official at the center of the agency’s tea party scandal is retiring.

Lois Lerner headed the IRS division that handles applications for tax-exempt status when she was placed on paid leave in May. While she was in charge, the agency acknowledged that agents improperly targeted tea party groups for extra scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status from 2010 to 2012.”

__________________________________________________

Like I said yesterday, never mind the torpedoes……. 🙂

From TheWallStJournal  “The Senate plunged into debate over legislation to fund the government while cutting of money for the new health-care law, with both sides accusing the other of threatening to bring about a government shutdown.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) opened debate by denouncing the bill  passed by the House Friday that embodies conservatives’ campaign to “defund Obamacare,” as the health law is known.”

“Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas) the leading proponent of the bill, set a confrontational tone by quickly proposing two motions he knew would be rejected — one to pass the House  bill by voice vote, and another to block any amendments that do not command a super-majority of 60 votes.”

__________________________________________________

There was some news stories last week that joyfully told everyone the Pope had softened his and the church’s stand against gay marriage. This should help clear up any misconceptions that have arisen as a result of his taken out of context remarks.

From TheTelegraph/UK  “Pope Francis excommunicates pro-gay marriage priest. He’s not the liberal the media wants.”

“From all of last week’s headlines saying that the Pope wants to forget this nonsense about abortion and gays, you’d imagine that Germaine Greer had been elected to run the Catholic Church. Actually what the Pope was saying was that he wants the Church to talk more about what it’s for than what it’s against. But that doesn’t mean it won’t still be against those things that contradict its teachings and traditions.

Just ask Greg Reynolds of Melbourne – a priest who appears to have been both defrocked and excommunicated because of his radical views on women clergy and gay marriage.”

Oh No! In a totally unforeseeable turn of events, the Pope has turned out to be Catholic. 🙄

So the left will be resuming it’s regularly scheduled hate fest pretty soon.
