Our Daily Thread 9-26-13

Good Morning!

On this day in 1777 Philadelphia was occupied by British troops during the American Revolutionary War.

In 1789 Thomas Jefferson was appointed America’s first Secretary of State. John Jay was appointed the first chief justice of the U.S. Samuel Osgood was appointed the first Postmaster-General. Edmund Jennings Randolph was appointed the first Attorney General.

In 1908 Ed Eulbach of the Chicago Cubs became the first baseball player to pitch both games of a doubleheader and win both with shutouts. 😯

In 1960 the first televised debate between presidential candidates Richard M. Nixon and John F. Kennedy took place in Chicago, IL.

And on this day in 1962 “The Beverly Hillbillies” premiered, in 1964 it was “Gilligan’s Island”, and in 1969 it was “The Brady Bunch.”

We have a bunch today. Lot’s of birthdays.

Today is George Gershwin’s birthday.

It’s Jody Davis’ of the Newsboys as well.

It’s also Lynn Anderson’s.

And Marty Robbins’.

They just don’t make ’em like Marty anymore. And thankfully they don’t make that green outfit anymore either. What were they thinking? 🙂

And one more, Cesar Rosas’, of Los Lobos.

If you’re not awake now, check your pulse.

  1. Good thing that you don’t need much sleep Aj. That’s a half hour of music that I’m sure you have been listening to.
Almost Friday here. sure is nice to be on school break.

  2. I was always amazed that “Rose Garden” was so popular. A bunch of clichés strung together into a song. I like Marty Robbins. El Paso is the only song of his I don’t like. It strains credulity.

  3. Some of the outfits were designed to look good and contrast in black and white, color photography and television weren’t standard yet. That may be why they had such hideously colored outfits…or it would have been an acid experiment gone wrong.
I say an “I Love Lucy” exhibit several years ago and the sets and some of the clothes were hideous combinations of colors and that was the explanation they gave.

  4. Three thoughts on Rose Garden
    1. Chas is right! I haven’t heard the song in years so I never remembered most of the words, just the tag line.
    2. White people can’t dance. (Especially to that song)
    3. Did anyone besides me notice the feathery things on the ends of the sleeves? They fascinated me as a child. The only time my mother was ever asked to leave a store with me was because of those feathery things. I was a very well behaved child, but I just wanted to touch those sleeves on a powder blue dress in an exclusive little dress shop. The sales lady suggested that my mother might want to take me home and hire a babysitter and come back to shop. She was highly offended and refused to shop there for about 5 years.

  5. Oh, and lest you think my mother just took my side in the whole affair, I STILL got in trouble for the mortifying embarrassment she suffered at being asked to leave a store with me.

  6. When my son was a baby his doctor prescribed a nebuliser twice a day for 15 minutes. He didn’t like having a mask held over his face and cried the whole time. To try and sooth him I would sing to him. I am not musically inclined and don’t know a lot of songs by heart. After about 5 or 10 minutes I would have run out of lullabys and hymns and resorted to TV theme songs. The Beverly Hillbillies, Gilligan’s Island and the Brady Bunch were three of my favorites.

  7. I danced at my daughter’s wedding. And my son’s. And my other son’s. They said I did not embarrass them. I don’t dance like other people. My dancing is done with enthusiasm, like in the living room on clean up day.

  8. This week has been flying by for me, I can’t believe it’s Thursday already. I have a news conference to go to this morning in town, so I get to do that before going into the office.

And next Tuesday is October already??

  10. It all depends on the definition of dance. 😀

Is real pigskin still used for footballs? Where is PETA?

I liked “Rose Garden”. Yes, it was clichéd and not sung in a country vibe. It did have a nice melody, however. It was never a favorite, however.

My monitor andr my keyboard wouldn’t work………….
I went to find a new keyboard, and have a used one the computer guy loaned me because he didn’t believe my story.
So, came back and tried messing around with the monitor and keyboard.
After about half an hour, I discovered
    THE POWER WAS OFF
I think I’ll go ahead and buy this keyboard because I don’t want to tell the computer guy what happened. It.s a newer one anyhow. And has functions i don’t know how to use.

  12. I understand MIM.
It ain’t funny Donna. The thing I miss most as I get older is my mind. I’m gradually losing it.
I started to tell the computer guy something, but didn’t because I couldn’t recall the word “icon”.

But I will reemember to correct the whatchacallit that gives my gravatar and name.

  13. I just got back from a prayer vigil at the Georgia state capitol for Pastor Saeed Abedini. It was very nicely done. Rabbi Scott Sekulow, brother of Jay who is over the American Center for Law and Justice, spoke along with others. One mother who knew Saeed and had two little girls with her spoke and then her oldest girl, maybe seven years old, spoke and said a very sweet prayer. A Christian muscian played his guitar and sang some music. We had times of the believers praying in small groups. There were not too many people there. At least the weather was nice. I got lost going there since I am not so familiar coming from the south side to the capitol area. I saw some of Atlanta that I have not seen, but knew I would eventually see a street I recognized. So, I finally found Martin Luther King and knew that went by the capitol and of course I went the wrong way on it. At least parking was easy directly across the street from the capitol. The gold dome of our state capitol is beautiful.

  14. It is surprising, but the efforts of Christians in America make a difference. I recently read Captive in Iran by Maryam Rostampour and Marziyeh Amirizadeh. The pressure from America (the Pope had input) eventually got them out of prison.
    It’s an interesting read.

Surprising because I would assume that Iran doesn’t care what the infidel world thinks.

  15. Chas, I was sitting in a different chair in my livingroom and found a gap in the boards on the wall. I asked a friend for some small pieces of wood to fill the gap as that was where the geckos were getting in. When I got around to moving things to fix it, I found I only needed to hit the board a couple of times with a hammer to take care of the problem. Just saved the extra wood that he had carefully cut for me.
I have finally learned that many computer problems are taken care of when I turn the computer fully off once in a while instead of just hibernating.

  16. Never knew before that our cat, “Trouble,” was a border cat…now I see the light! White on a black cat makes a border cat. Black on a white cat makes a cat that needs a bath or else it needs to get its roots done. 🙂 It’s late at the office and I’m getting a bit silly now.

I listened to a teleseminar earlier about doing copywriting for businesses. The presenter gave some good information about being honest and not using much hype. What I found interesting was that he, being of the liberal mindset, said he would refuse to take on clients who have a different set of values from his regarding issues such as same sex relationships, etc. This was not a situation where the listeners could comment during the talk. I kept thinking about how one-sided that is given that Christian business owners are being forced to do business with those of other values or pay fines, go to court, etc It just seemed to me that there is a big blind spot over how some are suppose to have rights and others not. It really seems to be evolving into some kind of caste system for lack of a better word. We need a new word about now….

  17. Busy day–but I didn’t dance around the living room. Maybe tomorrow. 😉

That’s it for me; I’m beat. I think I’ll listen to that Gershwin again, and then hit the sack. Good night/day, all.

  18. Of course I am up Donna! It is the middle of the afternoon and I just got back from the weight room. I’d better get cleaned up. I will be gone for the rest of the weekend though still on centre. A group of ladies have come from Australia to put on a women’s retreat for us. I can see the Training Centre where it will be held from my windows, so not too far away, just down the hill.
Looks like rain may be approaching. I am praying so.
