Our Daily Thread 9-25-13

Good Morning!

On this day in 1493 Christopher Columbus left Spain with 17 ships on his second voyage to the Western Hemisphere.

In 1513 the Pacific Ocean was discovered by Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa when he crossed the Isthmus of Panama. He named the body of water the South Sea.

In 1775 Ethan Allen was captured by the British while leading an attack on Montreal.

In 1882 the first major league double-header was played. It was between the Worcester and Providence teams.

In 1957, 300 U.S. Army troops stood guard as nine black students were escorted to class at Central High School in Little Rock, AR. The children had been forced to withdraw 2 days earlier because of unruly white mobs.

And in 1981 Sandra Day O’Connor became the first female justice of the U.S. Supreme Court when she was sworn in as the 102nd justice. She had been nominated the previous July by President Ronald Reagan.

Quote of the Day

I like radio better than television because if you make a mistake on radio, they don’t know. You can make up anything on the radio.

Today is Ronnie Cates’ birthday. So it’s Petra’s version of “Amazing Grace.”

Today is Dee Dee Warwick’s birthday. Besides being Dionne’s sister she was also the first to record this song.

Today is also Onnie McIntyre’s birthday. He’s the player of the white guitar/singer.

Ya’ gotta love 70’s funk. 🙂

And this last one is a request. 🙂

  1. That is diverse music. Sweet that you fulfill requests from your many followers.
    Still no rain here.
Time to begin your day to those on the east coast.
    Very dark here by now.
    Blessings all

  2. Jo–So good to see your smiling face! The internet is a wonderful thing! I love to have a face to go with a name.
Good morning, Chas, 6 Arrows. We’re headed to school early today for See You at the Pole. This is the first year they’re doing it at Becca’s school. One of the ladies from my recently joined prayer group organized it. The principal was very supportive of her efforts, even though she’s not a Christian. She even gave her a list of teacher prayer requests for us to pray for at our weekly meetings! I’m hoping for a good turnout. It’s Becca’s first time to participate in the annual event.

I have a QUESTION OF THE DAY

As I have toold you before Keller Williams is different than any other real estate company I have experienced. The believe isn God, Family, and Business in that order. They teach “lives worth living and careers worth having”. At major company events there is an “early bird” club that meets early in the morning to pray. All of this with corporate encouragement.
One of the phrases that I keep funning across is the concept of “servant leader” when a lot of people ask for an agent in another area to refer a client they ask for someone with a servant heart.

What does this mean to you? What is a servant leader? What does a servant leader do or say that sets them apart from just a regular leader?

  4. Kim’s QoD: The idea of a servant leader probably comes from passages like these: “Whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: and whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all” (Matthew 20:43, 44). However, Christ is referring to the status of Christians within the Kingdom of God – the greatest Christians are those who serve others in love, no matter what their social status.
I am always uneasy when a business tries to apply a spiritual truth to a secular pursuit, like J. C. Penney’s use of the Golden Rule. It smacks of profiteering from the Church, something that Ananias, Sapphira and Simon the Magician got in big trouble for trying to do. I spent my adolescence under a program which promised success in business if one just followed seven basic principles. We scorn the televangelists who say if you just pray the right prayer, God will give you everything you want, but the prosperity gospel has penetrated Western Christianity far deeper than we realize.

  5. We had a fairly small group at See You At The Pole. But, the principal was there and she cried during the children’s prayers. It was a great way to start the day.

  6. Lovely to actually SEE Jo! Hi, there!

So, AJ is really a dear, and which one is Ann in that photo? We all recognize Burt Lancaster when we see him . . .

Servant leadership is big with Officer’s Christian Fellowship, the small group Bible studies we participated in several times. It’s about recognizing your role is that of serving the people you lead–it’s an attitude of the heart that puts them before you. It’s looking out for the weak, strengthening those who need to be strengthened and encoruaging all even though you are the authority figure.

Jesus, of course, was the perfect servant leader.

For another question, over on my blog, I’m asking folks if they’re book hoarders. You can read it here: http://wp.me/p3HcoH-1g8

We got a half inche of unexpected rain over the weekend. It’s not due for six weeks here, but the grape crop was mostly in, and so we were mostly thankful. Our new house did well, but I missed the gurgling downspout from my old house!

Funny, the things that touch your heart!

  7. If an organization is determined to be a Christ centered organization, I see no reason to downplay that. When JC Penny was alive, the store indeed reflected his Christian leadership.
You see it in the way Chick-fil-a is run.
I’m not familiar with Keller Williams, but I see nothing wrong, and maybe something good with their motto, if it results in practice.
😦 I’m having to do this on a laptop. My monitor has quit on me.

  8. Good morning, everyone. (Guess I didn’t say that before.) 🙂

Jo, nice avatar. Your smile looks very much like my sister-in-law’s. 🙂

I agree with Ann — nice to see a face to go along with a name! I wouldn’t know how to get a picture of myself onto here, though, so I’ll just cheat and tell you my husband says I look like Carly Simon in her video “That’s the Way I Always Heard it Should Be”, especially when they show her from the left side (hair color is almost an exact match, and her facial features look more like mine from that side).

I don’t dress like she does, though!

  9. Kim, It seems to me that the company is asking for you to refer a client without expectation of recompense. A servant does the work, and the master gets the glory/reward?

  11. A servant leader to me is one who gets down on the level of their employees and will at times work alongside them finding out what it is really like in an employee’s situation to see if their is any way to improve the work environment for the employee or to see if suggestions might be made to help an employee be more successful. It is not a situation of watching the employee to catch mistakes which would be threatening. It is a bit like how Jesus came down to earth to experience life as we do and He showed us the best way to live. I think that kind of leadership makes for improved and loyal employees.

  12. Hi Jo. You’re probably asleep by now.

I think annms is the blonde, but I don’t know how I know that. Or maybe I don’t know that. 🙂

I use photos of me on fb and twitter, but for some reason I’ve just stuck with pretty dog Tess ever since I joined. I copied cheryl with Misten, I guess.

Such a long day yesterday and I had to wade into the whole HHS contraception mandate for a story on an order of Catholic nuns — who operate a home for the elderly in our community — who have become the latest to sue the government over the obamacare requirement that they provide contraception through their health insurance to their employees. They have the same public law firm representing them as represent Hobby Lobby.

Anyway, lots of phone interviews in between trying to navigate through former stories and online documents & sites charting the twists and turns of the law, the pro and con arguments, trying to just understand it well enough to write about it. There were no wire stories on the latest lawsuit being filed that I could pull from yesterday for some reason — only thing I could find by the end of the day was a short WSJ blog post.

So I didn’t get out of the office until 8 p.m.

Tonight our small home groups begin meeting for the year and I’m still debating whether to go to the one that’s in my neighborhood. I didn’t formally sign up but I’m sure I wouldn’t be told to scram. It’s the home of my elder, after all. 🙂 I know I should go, but I haven’t maintained a very good attendance track record through the years on those, I’m afraid. I start out with good intentions but fall away as work schedules get long and complicated & I come home tired, wanting to just stay in and crash for the night.

  13. RKessler, no. When you are looking for another agent in another city you are looking to GIVE a referral. The reffering agent receives a portion of the commission for handing over their client to another agent. The goal is to find an agent who will treat your client as you would treat them.

KW has formulas that they encourage agents to use to be more successful that they have gained from interviewing thousands of top agents but it isn’t a “name it and claim it” religious mindset. It is more of a golden rule mindset and if you do the right things you will be rewarded in time. The customer/client always comes first except where to do so would be a violation of ethics or laws.

  14. That Rameau piece was so beautiful, AJ, I had to listen to it again! (And this time watch the video, too.) I mentioned before that it was perfect, which was because I had had a wicked headache last night and didn’t sleep well. I got up early, still with quite a headache, came to WV, saw you had posted the music, and sat listening to the Rameau in a darkened room. What a soothing piece of music to hear right then! 🙂 It relaxed me so much, I went back to bed, fell asleep right away, and slept until 9:00! I needed that. 🙂

Thank you for taking requests, AJ. That one hit the spot!

  16. I get to see my sister this weekend. We’re meeting in Belton, where her eldest is attending college. It’ll just be me and the girls plus one niece. Hubby leaves on Saturday for an elk hunt in New Mexico. He’s so excited about it that I can’t help but be excited for him. It’s something he’s always wanted to do. Doesn’t sound like much fun to me, as they’ll be sleeping in tents and doing a lot of hiking, but…he can’t wait! He’s going with a couple of really good friends, so they should have a lot of fun being guys. Connie’s going to stay with me most of the week, which I appreciate b/c sometimes I get lonely in the evenings when Hubby is away.

  17. We have one principal here who really stood out as a servant leader. He wanted to help us with our jobs in any way he could. I mentioned a request to him, actually which room I would like since I had to move the kinder class, and found out later that he looked into it the same day and figured out how to add the bathrooms we needed. So nice to have someone who clears he way instead of blocking the way.
Thanks for the comments on my picture. This was taken last Thanksgiving with my sons, you can see their arms around my shoulders. When I saw the pictures I realized there wasn’t one where they weren’t making all sorts of faces. I just smiled.

  18. So WORLD changed its look again. I think websites do that so they can justify paying those computer programmers. And maybe they are trying to fit smaller screens like iPhones and tablets. I just went over there to see after reading the comments here. It took a little longer to find the political cartoons. Glad I went today so that I could get them posted for Chas on Friday.

And I just sent AJ the college football list. Last week was too easy, with so many of us getting nine of ten correct. It won’t be that way this time. Of course, the conference games are in full swing, and that is when upsets usually happen.
