Our Daily Thread 9-14-13

Good Morning!

And Happy Saturday!

On this day in 1752 the British Empire adopts the Gregorian calendar, skipping eleven days (the previous day was September 2).

In 1814 the poem Defence of Fort McHenry is written by Francis Scott Key. The poem is later used as the lyrics of The Star-Spangled Banner.

In 1901 President of the United States William McKinley dies after an assassination attempt on September 6, and is succeeded by Theodore Roosevelt.

In 1960 the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is founded.

And in 1994 the Major League Baseball season is canceled because of a strike.

  1. Donna, from yesterday’s political thread.
The problem was, I mispelled “dummkopf”. The New American Oxford Dictionary (on my Kindle) says it means “blockhead”.
    Whatever that means. 😆

Okay, ajisuun, I usually find that Aj posts when it is 9pm here and it sounds like it would be 11am there. That makes us 10 hours apart! However i am also 10 hours the other way from the east coast. At least you and I are still on Saturday. It is now 10:12pm here on Saturday. I don’t plan on staying on much longer. 🙂

  3. Morning everyone. I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. I have posted Session one of Living by the Book by Howard Hendricks. There are PDF files you can download and save to your computer. I will see if I can find the You Tube Video of Session 1 and post it for folks to view as well.

  4. Good Saturday morning! I was busy yesterday trying to build a website That’s something totally new and different for me. I am using a pre-formatted for businesses type program but can later customize if needed. I don’t have much on it yet, but if anyone wants to take a look, go to http://www.janicegarey.com. 🙂
I used the stock photos and really did not know how to get the spacing like I wanted. Even so, I was happy that I made that much progress in one day.

  6. Hello, Saturday!

    Janice- the site looks good.

I think I’ll use the question Janice has on her site as a QoD: “What seat would you choose on the ferris (sic) wheel from which to view life?” (BTW- spell check says “Ferris” needs to be capitalized. I guess that’s because it’s named for the inventor.)

Since the Ferris wheel goes around and no seat is better than another, I presume it means is the wheel were not turning. I’d take the highest seat to get the best view. All the other seats have some other part of the wheel blocking part of the view.

  7. The website does look good, Janice.
I love Bill Cosby. He has taken a lot of criticism lately and yes he may have messed up quite a bit personally, but I think he has the right ideas and isn’t afraid to tell them to the black community.
Not sure what today will hold, but I am open to the adventure of it.

  8. Thank you, Peter, for telling me about Ferris wheel. I was at the office when putting together the website and did not get to really look at it in a detailed manner. For once my husband had to wait for me to finish what I was working on before we left.

Since I only had stock photos to choose from, do you think the three I chose are ones that get the point across? When I saw the gal in the top frame did not have her eyes open I had to adjust my wording to go along with that detail.

If anyone else sees something to change, please let me know. Now I have to figure out how to make changes.

  9. Nice website Janice. And who are the people?
View life from a seat on a Ferris wheel? It doesn’t matter. Everyone gets a chance to see it all.
But life really starts when you get back on the ground.

    Am i missing something?

  10. Good morning! I slept in extremely late for me today — 8:15! I feel a lot better after a good night’s rest. I’m so grateful I was able to sleep last night as tonight is L.’s party and there won’t be much slumbering going on, I’m afraid! Hubby and Becca are getting ready to go to the ranch.

  11. I had to use what photos were on the site to choose from and my computer at work is slow so I only got to see maybe a hundred of the 8000 to choose from. I have no idea who the people in the pictures are. They are stock photos for building business or church websites. That means lots of other websites probably use those same pictures but just not in the same format or with my words.

I chose the Ferris wheel just to get people thinking about viewpoints. Throughout life we could be seeing things from different points of view. The question as posed was referring to a stationary Ferris wheel as the photo has caught it at a point in time.

You are right, Chas, that we live on the ground, but do we take the high view or the low view of life? I hope this makes some sense. I did not mean for it to be confusing. Just wanted it to be thought provoking. I am a bit afraid of heights so I was momentarily considering hanging up there in the top chair, LOL. Now that is a challenge in trusting God with one’s fears. The high view is to trust Him. The low view is to look down and be afraid of falling. What was Jesus thinking when Satan had Him on the mountaintop?

  12. On Janice’s question – My first thought was like Peter’s answer. Then I remembered that Ferris wheels have bench seats, so there is a difference. I would choose an edge seat, because you can see more, looking down at the side and looking out in front. The middle seats only allow you to look out in front. Now, as to which side I would choose, probably the right side – I often find myself taking the right hand spot in places, probably because I’m right handed.

  13. Janice’s question poses an interesting reaction in me. I am not afraid of heights but I am cautious. I don’t trust the railing when I am on the 20th floor condo balcony. I never lean against it. I am not afraid to fly although I have started suffereing from motion sickness.
I tell myself that I always try to take the high road in difficult situations and trust that everything will take care of itself if I do what is right. Often this leaves me hurt and confused, but I don’t know of another way to handle things. This also makes some people think I am weak and don’t stand up for myself…

  14. Janice, nice looking website! I’ll have to answer the QoD when I have more time.

Lots to do today, but I have finished two of the eight things on my checklist for today (the second thing being fairly extensive), so, so far so good. 🙂

Mumsee, I finished Last Child in the Woods today. This was the book I had almost given up on after only a couple, three chapters until you pointed out that you had read part of the book and liked it thus far. So I gave it a chance, and now am certainly glad I did. The seventh and final section of the book, entitled “To Be Amazed” was especially enjoyable. Really encourages me to get out in nature with the kids, and not just once in a while, to drink in the beauty of God’s wonderful creation, His power and His majesty. If you’ve still got the book, keep reading it! Or get it from the library and finish it. 🙂

  15. Thanks to all of you for the encouragement on the website. It was one of those things that I could have muddled over for days and probably years, but I decided to jump into it and go the quickest route possible for initial construction. God certainly had His hand upon how things worked together for good with the effort combined with what was available for use on the program. I got the domain site, website builder package and an e-mail address (that I still need to set up) for around eighty-five dollars. Now that my husband sees that I can do this and that it is affordable, maybe he will let me set up a site for the tax/accounting business. He has always felt he would not have time to update a website to keep it fresh.

  16. Minister Man from earlier in the week is still wreaking havoc. He has upset Mama R “because she hasn’t asked him to do enough”. He wants to do more.
Daddy J qualifies for a full military funeral with 21 gun salute. Minister Man has told her it won’t happen unless she can find a certain piece of paper.
Every time this man opens his mouth he creates turmoil, yet she still seems to think he is the best minister in the world. I am concerned about the influence he has on her.

  17. JaniceG, congratulations on the website, it looks nice so far — is this something you’ve been thinking of doing for a while? What was the genesis of it (to use a biblical word!)? I can tell you that blogging can get hard over time — merely by its constant demand on one to post daily (ideally). It’s not so much a shortage of ideas or material; it’s just “doing it” for some reason that becomes such a grind. 😦

  18. Donna, I am going to try to attend a writer’s conference and for that reason I need to have a web presence. I have something I wrote for children a few years back that I will be polishing up to see if anyone might be interested in it. I use to attend church with someone who did some nice children’s books and she was really not encouraging about the prospects of getting published so I never even submitted. I have heard your chances are greater if you make the effort to attend a conference.

I do not intend to do a daily blog. I might possibly do something three days a week based on the title of the blog: Looking, Living, Learning: IN GOD’S IMAGE. Since I was a homeschooling mom, I am very interested in education so that covers one topic (Learning). For Looking, since I have this Smart Phone, I could post a photo from nature with either scripture or a haiku to highlight looking at God’s creation and seeing it is indeed good. And for living…yea, I guess I do that and it is a challenge to live up to being made in the image of God. Always something to write about God’s word and how He helps us to be better than we would be without Him. 🙂

I really don’t mean to dominate the thread todsy.

Kim….this man sounds like a pest/predator type…..he seems to want to be noticed, admired and “respected”….seems like to him, Daddy J’s going home to Jesus has nothing to do with DaddyJ or his family, it’s all about him!….hang in there for them….and stand your ground when it comes to protecting their hearts….I’m praying……

  21. The thing is this church is associated with the Christian school (now closed) that I attended. I have more of a history there than anyone. There have been 4 ministers in the history of this church and I have attended school and chapel under three of them and for about 4 years when my parents attended church there. He is by far the worst of the lot asnd I am not too far from telling him so. It is taking everything within me to bite my tongue. I don’t know what I will do if he upsets Mama R again.

  22. Actually, the only time I rode a Ferris wheel I felt fine going forward, but when it got to the top and I started going backwards, I had a momentary panic. The feeling of falling backwards and not being able to see was nearly terrifying.

  23. She does need a specific form for a military wedding. I’m not home so I can’t look up the number. We keep our locked away with the important papers. I had my father’s, too, for his funeral–I think we got a flag for the casket.

I’m sorry to hear of his death. It’s possible the VA could help, but I was told to keep track of that form and keep it in a safe place. My dad and husband both got them when they left the Navy.

I learned two things: 1. Aggie players and Aggie fans don’t quit; and 2. Aggies and Alabamans get along very well and understand that their true enemy is …. OBAMA.

  25. Good morning! Hope everyone is having a wonderful Sunday morning. The party was a great success. I have no idea what time they went to sleep, as I gave up about midnight and they are all still sleeping. But, they weren’t loud this year. I got a great night’s sleep–a solid 7 1/2 hours!!! They are a good group of girls. It’s so nice to actually like all of your kid’s friends. I’m very fond of all seven of the girls who came–a couple of them L. has known since kindergarten. They hung out in the game room a lot and I could hear every word spoken as they were quite loud. It was fun to listen to their innocent conversations and their giddy laughter. I couldn’t be prouder of L. She is a delightful human being who I feel so privileged to be raising. I’ve been feeling a little nostalgic, realizing she’ll only have four more birthdays while living at home. The time has gone by so fast–I can still remember perfectly the day we brought her home from the hospital.

Rickyweaver: I didn’t watch the game, as I don’t care for football, but I love your #2 above!

I am hoping that since this is PNG Independence Day they will perform today and then it will be quieter. I may go to school, since it is in a quieter corner of centre. (and, yes, we use British spelling here)

  31. Donna, you would be ever so proud of Jake. In the evening, she rounds up the turkey and guineas who have gone afield and brings them home. Of course, I am on the other end of the leash still. But she is getting it. She does “Come bye” and “Away to me” and “guineas home” and “steady” pretty well. This time, she brought them all in and then realized one was not with them. She found it in the sheep pen and persuaded it to fly out and rejoin the flock, without having to go in the pen herself. Good girl, Jake.

  32. McKinley’s assassination is one of the points of infamy in Buffalo. It has just about completely overshadowed the AMAZING 1901 Pan-Am Exhibition.

A couple years back I took some training classes for local tour guides. which was shared by several organizations. My goal was to help run eco-tours for the local chapter of RiverKeepers. Part of our training was at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site (the Wilcox mansion). If I ever had enough free time (HAHA!) I would volunteer as a docent there.
