Our Daily Thread 7-17-13

Good Morning!

On this day in 1815 Napoleon Bonaparte surrendered to the British at Rochefort, France.

In 1821 Spain ceded Florida to the U.S.

In 1862 national cemeteries were authorized by the U.S. government.

In 1866 authorization was given to build a tunnel beneath the Chicago River.  The project took three years and cost $512,709.

In 1941 the longest hitting streak in baseball history ended when the Cleveland Indians pitchers held New York Yankee Joe DiMaggio hitless for the first time in 57 games. 😦

In 1941 Brigadier General Soervell directed Architect G. Edwin Bergstrom to have basic plans and architectural perspectives for an office building that could house 40,000 War Department employees on his desk by the following Monday morning.  The building is now known as the Pentagon.

In 1954 the Brooklyn Dodgers made history as the first team with a majority of black players.

In 1955 Disneyland opened in Anaheim, CA.

In 1975 an Apollo spaceship docked with a Soyuz spacecraft in orbit.  It was the first link up between the U.S. and Soviet Union.

And in 1987 Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North and rear Admiral John Poindexter begin testifying to Congress at the “Iran-Contra” hearings.

Today is Mick Tucker’s birthday. Sweet.

No really, it is. 🙂

This is the problem with sweets, you can never stop at one.

I’d forgotten how much I liked these guys. And since there are very few musician birthdays or notable songs for today…..

But we do have one notable song released today in 1965…

  1. Morning, all! Lime pie is cooling on the rack.
Eggs, milk, citris juice, whole grain cracker crust,…sounds like a good breakfast to me.
It is only the pesky sugar in it that is bothrrsome.

  3. Two questions: First, from yesterday, what is a filter for a phone? Second, why must I be bothered by this pesky fly while three lazy cats lay snoozing at my feet?

  4. p.s. I LOVE key lime pie; can you maybe make it with Splenda? My dil makes pumpkin pie with Splenda for me and some folk around here actually like it better than the one made with sugar

  5. Because these phones receive all that is out there on the web, I am referring to a filter for undesirable Internet content. While our son was on campus at the Christian college he had the campus wide filtering on his computer.

  6. Wow, Janice you are really perky for so early in the morning. Are you trying to be on my time zone? Sorry Chas. I was looking on the blog at 8:30. but no one here and now it is 10:30. So wednesday is a nice day and I got some work done in my classroom. It was so nice to sleep in after being up in the night. It is going to be a shock to my system when school begins next week.

  7. This lime pie uses 4 egg yolks in the filling and six egg whites are mixed up as meringue and then 6 Tblspoons of that is mixed into the filling. It has a wonderful consistency. A sugar substitute could be used if it is one recommended for baking.

  8. It still seems strang to hear someone tell how their Wednesday went. I have no idea about mine.

There’s mostly just old folks at the Y early in the mornings. But when school’s out, some young people show up.
There is this cute young girl this morning. She’s wearing a T-shirt that says,
    CUTE
    DOESN’T
    WIN
    GAMES

Reminded me of a sign I saw on the door of a joint in western NC.
    “No Shoes
    No Shirt
    No Problem”

    😆
lemme see if I have this right now. If not, I’ll change my name to aa87. That sounds better than g2.

  10. Jo,

No, he ‘s not wall size. Only about 15 inches. He’d need to be 21-22 and a couple pounds heavier. But still a lot of fun to catch. I don’t keep ’em, I release everything.

But smallies like this one put up a good fight, and they’ll jump 4-5 feet outta the water. It’s quite a show.

  11. So Joe D’s hitting streak went 57 games? I like 57. It’s a good number.

Does anyone know whether a rear Admiral is a higher rank than an Admiral? And why is it rear? Does that mean he gets to command the ship from the back? Or is he qualified to use the reverse gear on a ship? Funny how the Navy names its ranks. And do you know the origin of the word “admiral”? It comes from the Arabic amir=commander; al usually refers to Allah in an Arabic word.

  12. While I would love to slap on a smile and tell you that everything in Idaho is just fine…nothing has been settled yet. As nosy as I naturally am, I just don’t want to know too many of the details.
    These children are amazing.
I know over the years Mumsee has shared about some of the children, but I thought you might like to know a different perspective.
Remember I have my rose colored glasses on when I see them. I know they came here because of a troubled past, but I see the resuts and where they are today.
Two of the children came here non-verbal and on heavy medications. Today they are non-medicated and chatterboxes. The girl has discovered that it may just irritate Chloe a little bit when she calls her Clover. Her sister brought her a sand dollar from the beach. We looked up the Legend of the Sand Dollar on line. Last night she asked me for another poem. I think today we will work on learning The Owl and the Pussycat.
The non-verbal boy (this would be NJL’s 5 yr old, he is 7 now) talks almost non-stop. Right now he is in his bed in the room next to where I am. He knows he can’t get out of bed yet because it isn’t time, but he is having the best time talking to himself. I am getting pretty good at understanding him, sometimes I need his little sister to interpret. Now there’s a cutie-pie.
Little Sister (5) is cute and she knows it. You should see her at swim lessons. She is so tiny and I just love little girls in cute swim suits. I am wondering if they will notice if I pack her in my suitcase to go home.
There are two 15 year olds. My Pensacola Girl and her brother. He is the “man of the house” type. He knows about almost everything around here. Where the gas cans are. What he should do with them. What needs to be done. I am impressed. My experience with 15 year old boys doesn’t have a reference for this one. You would almost think he is 20. No, maybe 25.
There is another sister who came home yesterday. I don’t know her well yet. Maybe today.
Then of course is “my girl”. She is my guide out here on the prairie. When I have a question about something or need something she is my go to person. I have told her if she ends up going to college in Pensacola, she has a home to run home to when she needs it.
Me? Well, I have heard that the sky is beautiful at night. Last night I finally managed to stay up to 10pm to see for myself. It is just as I was told. There was some heat lightning last night as well. I have never really thought too much about lightning starting fires, but that is a danger here. There are some fires around us and you can smell the smoke sometimes.

  13. Between the cat attacking me and all the chatter around here, who could sleep in?

I get to go into work a tad later today because I have to go to a roller derby practice tonight — no, it’s not that 2nd job I think I will probably need someday, although I think they are recruiting; too bad I’ve forgotten how to roller skate.

I’m doing a story on the team which is moving to our area for their home game, so it should be a fun night.

But could I sleep a little later? Nooooo. The cat was ruthless this morning, attacking my head, switching her huntress tail in my face (all the while emitting this creepy, low purring sound near my ear as she plotted her next move), rubbing up against the table lamp that almost fell to the floor a couple times. What a brat.

Got her fed and now she’s outdoors tormenting some poor innocent garden creature, I’m quite sure.

  14. Janice, I’d try to find an app for a filter — or you could just go to Safari or whatever your browser is and type in internet filter, something should come up that you could download to the phone, a mobile version.

(Just tried searching for “internet filter” on the apps icon my phone, something called Ranger Browser – Safe Internet Filter came up, it’s free to download.)

  15. The magpies that moved in here around ten years or so ago, make it difficult for me to sleep in too late. However, my husband is able to ignore them and sleep longer. I love mornings. He is a night owl.

I now realize what it means to be screeching like a magpie. They and their babies are real screechers.

There is an advertisement in today’s Times-News for sandals. Those are shoes with a bottom and a strap. There is a pair (Mens & women’s, I don’t know how they tell the difference.) for $64.99, and others, with the cheapest at $24.99, and the women’s for $26.99.
How they can possibly tell the difference, I don’t know. But there is a reason someone would pay $40.00 more for a shoe bottom and a strap.

  18. Ephesians 3:14 For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

My pray for today is grant us the strength we need to face life problems through His Holy Spirit. That we come to an understanding of what it means to be rooted and grounded in love. That we come to better understand what it means to the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. We face many issue and many false ideas being present as fact in society, that goes against the Word of God and What is God’s Love. In order to not fall for their false teaching we must come back to God’s Word and come to better understanding of His view on live. Amen,

  19. I’ve missed a lot and been catching up last night and today.

Someone mentioned Drill yesterday. I haven’t seen him in a long time. Is he going under another name now? Anybody know anything about him?

Also, NJL has been absent a long time. Is she okay?

Mumsee, I read your prayer request from last week, and my family is praying for you.

Kim, I’m so glad it worked out for you to make the trip.

  22. FINALLY got the hang of it! I fixed pot roast for lunch. Granted I did run out of mashed potatoes, but I recylcled it for dinner and made rice. There was one small serving left AFTER adding two more people for dinner than lunch! Yeah, I know, it’s the small victories. 😉
For the daughter of my father, feeding all these people has made me happy. I love to hear children ask “may I have more please?” I love everyone sitting down together for a meal.
My special girl tried to teach me how to make rubarb pie tonight. We will have them tomorrow.
There are definately things I will miss when I go home…which will now be Friday instead of Saturday. I have had a couple of things come up at home and have a funeral to attend and a very close family friend (He is in his 80’s) end up in ICU. He and his wife opened their home to me when I was the teenage daughter of an alcoholic.
