Good Morning!

On this day in 1790 the District of Columbia, or Washington, DC, was established as the permanent seat of the United States Government.

In 1862 David G. Farragut became the first rear-admiral in the U.S. Navy.

In 1912 Bradley A. Fiske patented the airplane torpedo.

In 1926 the first underwater color photographs appeared in “National Geographic” magazine.

In 1935 Oklahoma City became the first city in the U.S. to make use of parking meters.

In 1945 the United States detonated the first atomic bomb in a test at Alamogordo, NM.

In 1951 J.D. Salinger’s novel “The Catcher in the Rye” was first published.

In 1957 Marine Major John Glenn set a transcontinental speed record when he flew a jet from California to New York. It took 3 hours, 23 minutes and 8 seconds.

In 1969 Apollo 11 blasted off from Cape Kennedy, FL, and began the first manned mission to land on the moon.

And in 1973 Alexander P. Butterfield informed the Senate committee investigating the Watergate affair of the existence of recorded tapes.

It’s also Stewart Copeland’s birthday. He’s the drummer.

And it was on this day in 1981 that Harry Chapin was killed in an auto accident on the way to a benefit concert. 🙂

Ephesians 38 To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ; 10 to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, 11 according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him. 13 Therefore I ask that you do not lose heart at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.

    My prayer today is we come to understand that we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Christ. We have unsearchable riches of Christ, if we just trust in Him. That God desires to show us His manifold wisdom, if we ask and wait upon Him. I wonder if too many times we put our trust in societies wisdom, and we left society stop us from having boldness and access with confidence through faith in Christ. Today put aside the wisdom of society and pick up God’s Word and let God reveal His wisdom to you.

  7. Ginger Rogers once said that she did everything Fred Astaire did, except in heels and backward. Not much backward here.
    I wonder if any of the men ever dropped the women in practice. Those are some difficult movements. Gene Kelly has some real athletic moves.

  8. Good morning, Jo, Roy and Chas. It’s been a busy summer so far. This morning, I’m taking eldest daughter to my MIL’s for camp. She’ll be there until Friday afternoon. Becca’s got pottery camp this week–it runs from 10-2 Tuesday through Friday. I love day camps as it helps keep her entertained. She is a high energy child and really needs something to occupy her brain each day. Eldest daughter is content to stay home and read a book all day, but youngest gets bored if we don’t get out and do something!

  9. Admiral Farragut was famous for his quote while entering Mobile Bay enforcing the blockade of the South. He had been cautioned to proceed with caution because the bay was laced with torpedoes. His now infamous quote was: D__mn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.

  10. Apollo 11. My brother wanted to be an astronaut, so he made sure we all watched every aspect of the Apollo missions. I remember getting to stay up way past our bedtime to watch Neil Armstrong walk on the moon. Of course, the official date is July 20, but it was before midnight out West, so I think of it as July 19 when he first said those famous words: “That’s one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.” Little did we know how the space program would fizzle out over the next decade.

  11. We continue to wait on the system to work here. Husband is off in town in his trailer, not allowed to see any of the children until further notice. Kim and her daughter are here and Kim is handling the kitchen and some child care for me. She has been wonderful.

  14. Tough time for you all. 😦

    My clothes dryer has healed itself. Somehow the automatic timer that shuts it off went out maybe a year ago and I haven’t bothered to see if it could be fixed. The machine is nearly 25 years old and I figured I could use a kitchen oven timer if I had to.

    But this morning, I just heard it buzz and the cycle ended. All on its own.

  18. We have long suspected, but now I have first hand knowledge that our Mumsee is quite the woman/mother.

    I spent 7 hours in a car with IdahoMike. Two talkers locked in a car…we covered a lot of subjects!!!! He has quite the sense of humor. As you may remember he worked the Salt Lake City Olympics. As we were catching our flights out of Orlando, he told me the week before when he flew in he didn’t expect to be leaving with a strange woman. I said it must have been all that time amongst the Mormons. His answer was that there was a country song in there somewhere.

    I spent 4 hours with Mumsee’s brother! I now “know” things 😉 I know she got car sick as a child. Of course looking from the “new road” to the old switchback road, I can understand the car sickness. And rumor has it that the woman who skinned and cooked a rattlesnake with her children started off as a vegetarian!

    As you have all read my sagas of my life with BG, you can imagine my awe when two fifteen year olds hop out of bed at 7 am, take care of their chores and return for breakfast. Then there are the two eleven year olds, the seven year old, and the five year old who do as they are told! It is evident these children respect her and are surrounded by love.

    As further evidence of what good parents these two have always been, when the trouble started the oldest daughter came home to help. Right now one of the sons is here helping. He is in the military and has to leave today. You can see that he believes in what his parents are doing, that he took time off and came. I know of some biological children who would resent sharing their parents with adopted children and not lift a finger to help. Not in this family. The love here is definately ” a silken chord, strong as a chain of steel”.

    The people of the community that have dropped by are amazed that we only knew each other over the internet, yet I came when Mumsee asked. They are so thankful I was able to help. What they don’t know is the blessing I have received by being here. I only wish I knew more I could do. Cooking doesn’t really seem to be enough.

  20. Thanks, Kim for the update. I am sure cooking and whatever else you can do is greatly needed and appreciated. The spiritual and emotional support is even more important for all involved. 🙂

  21. IdahoMike and my husband had said something about Green Acres. I had made the comment that there were people who would pay good money to see me with a bowl in the kitchen to put scraps for the pigs. So here ya go folks, enjoy and laugh along with me:

  23. Peter, go back over last week’s prayer thread and you will be able to pray more effectively. Thanks for the testimony of what we always suspected Kim. Mumsee is a precious jewel. It is a privilege to know her even over the blog.

  25. That was my total exposure to Green Acres. I did watch an episode of “Petticoat Junction”.

  30. I HAVE A NEW PHONE! it has the internet on it! I can see the videos, too! I HAVE MUCH TO LEARN. Please forgive my learning curve which will mostly be downhill!

    SO thankful to hear of how Kim & BG are helping In a great time of need. God is in the mix and HE MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE.

  34. This afternoon, Emily baked a beet (not a typo) pound cake, & frosted it with homemade whipped cream, with strawberries & blueberries decorating it.

    Forrest insisted we had to sing Happy Birthday because we were having cake. 🙂

  37. Ah, Jo, sleeping until 9 — that does feel good, doesn’t it (or helps, anyway)? On that night recently that I hardly slept when 6th Arrow was sick, I actually got my best sleep from 7:00 to 9:30 a.m., which helped quite a bit. Then I had a very brief nap in the afternoon (not more than about 10 minutes), but I got through the rest of the day pretty well and slept great the next night. And 6th Arrow was only sick that one night, so I’m praising God for that, too.

  38. So I’m sitting here with 4 library books that I have checked out at the same time, wondering how I’m going to finish them (or whether I should) before they need to go back. I see two of them have holds placed on them, so I won’t be able to renew them when the due dates come. I’m not very far into any of the books, but two of them don’t seem to be as good as I thought they would be, so I’ll probably take them back and concentrate on the other two, Love & Respect, by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs, and The Ragamuffin Gospel, by Brennan Manning, which includes a foreword by Michael W. Smith and testimony by Rich Mullins.

    Anyone read those books? (Or the other two I have: Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder and Take the U Out of Clutter?)

  42. Hmmm, maybe I shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss Last Child in the Woods then. I’m only on p.19, and the book has 310 pages. It also is due in one week, and someone is waiting for it. Think I can finish it before then?

    I might have to disappear from here for a while… 😉
