Our Daily Thread 7-8-13

Good Morning!

On this day in 1608 the first French settlement at Quebec was established by Samuel de Champlain.

In 1776 Col. John Nixon gave the first public reading of the U.S. Declaration of Independence to a crowd at Independence Square in Philadelphia.

In 1889 The Wall Street Journal was first published.

In 1889 John L. Sullivan defeated Jake Kilrain, in the last championship bare-knuckle fight. The fight lasted 75 rounds.

In 1969 the U.S. Patent Office issued a patent for the game “Twister.”

And in 1970 the San Francisco Giant’s Jim Ray Hart became the first National League player in 59 seasons to collect six runs batted (RBI) during a single inning.

Quote of the Day

“Cooking is like painting or writing a song. Just as there are only so many notes or colors, there are only so many flavors – it’s how you combine them that sets you apart.”

Wolfgang Puck

On this day in 1958 the Recording Industry Association of America presented the first gold record. It went to this soundtrack. 🙂

It’s Jai Johanny Johanson’s birthday. And it’s the looong version, from way back.

This last one is pretty old, but everybody knows the song.

  1. I’ve never paid money for a dog. And I had two when I was a kid.
    They were good dogs.

Elvera used to say, “Home again, home again, jiggy d’ jig”.
I thought that was something she made up.
    Evidently not.
I suspect it comes from a poem of some sort.

One thing about being home again. You have to start your routine. Even if you’d rather not. So? It’s the Y for me.
And no more eggs, bacon, pancakes, etc. for breakfast. It was cold cerial and cold milk. Haven’t had the coffee yet.

  4. Thanks Linda. I had gone to Mother Goose to get the whole thing and you did it for me.
Over the past week, I have thought a lot. I had told Mr. P on the previous Sunday that it was the first time since I was 16 years old that I wasn’t stressed about money. Then Tuesday happened. I am searching for the lessons I should have learned through all of this. Today is the first time since I was in my early 20’s I have woken up without a plan and a purpose. MOst of what comes to mind is negative like never let your guard down, nevver trust that everything is going to be OK, never let yourself dream because they just get crushed. I don’t like to be in that mode and am desperately trying to turn things around and put a positive spin on them. I look at the time and I would almost be at work by now. I had let myself start imagining the things I could do with the money I was making. Sweet Baby Boy’s parents have made an offer on a house. They will need a fence for the dogs. Wouldn’t it have been nice to be able to send them money to help pay for the fence?
I was able to start doing some things for Baby Girl that I hadn’t been able to do.
Guy I Used to Work With told me to put myself on the clocks and do some work for him.
Just my ramblings this morning. First things first. I have got to get this house back to normal..

  5. I was given my choice between being fired or resigning. My compensation was based on getting qualified buyers to the agents. I received a portion of their commission. There were always questions about whether I deserved to be on a deal or not. It was just too much “noise”. There was a deal that was questionable and while I did not intentionally put my name on a deal I did not deserve, I also did not properly document so it looked suspicious.
I have thought that when I meet with the head of KW in this area this week to discuss my options I can think of a dozen reasons it isn’t my fault and a dozen reasons that it is my fault. In the end it just wasn’t a good fit and it didn’t work out.
I am sad because there were so many opportunities with the team. I was going to Austin in September, the head of the team had just signed the team up for coaching and I was looking forward to that. I still think he is a good man and I have a lot of respect for him. I still think it is a good company with lots of opportunity. I regret I won’t be part of it.
Now I have to decide what is next. It does solve the problem of leaving home at 7 am and getting home at 6 pm. It will help me have more time for family.

  6. This is not necessarily a QoD, but it might generate interesting discussion. This morning Mrs L asked me a question: “A lot of people talk about man being made for the glory of God, but never give a scripture reference. Where does the Bible say that?” So I did a word search on Bible gateway.com and found around 400 uses of the word “glory” in the KJV. Only three have the possibility of suggesting that we are made “for the glory of God” (my emphasis):

    Psalm 8:5
For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

    Isaiah 43:6-7
I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth; Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.

    1 Corinthians 11:7
For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.

Noe, the Isaiah passage does have the exact phrasing created him for my glory, but it is refereing to Jacob and the nation of Israel, not man in general.

So, the question is: Where does the Bible say we are created for God’s glory?

  7. Well, I am on the clock with Guy. Hit him up for a dollar raise. He said keep my options open but this would give me some activity so that I could move forward. He is also paying me as a consultant to help him get a team together. Not sure where it will go. Not siure I want to go back to work with him, but it is nice to know that he still cares and wants what is best for me and is willing to help.

  8. Kim, praying for you this week. And you can take heart in this — you’ll no doubt be growing spiritually in the coming weeks (as we all do during the hard times). That’s often little consolation while we’re wading through the mess and can’t see a way out. But we tend to rightly flee to Christ during these times, realizing in a very day-to-day way how truly dependent we are on Him for everything.

  9. Here’s another piece on the question of why God created us:

    http://www.icr.org/article/537/

” … While we can never fully answer the question, it helps to recognize that the answer will come only as we recognize the character and attributes of God. …

” … Perhaps the grandest statement of His purpose can be found in Revelation 4:11, where we see heavenly beings gather in His praise, saying, ‘Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.’ And there we have it! God created us for His pleasure, for His ultimate good will, because it is best in His estimation. … “

  10. We’re on a mission, mumsee.

Actually, a very upset woman at the dog park once told me that the city or county government needed to “do something” about the rattlesnakes up in the hilly park where people here often walk their dogs.

“Like a spay-and-neuter program?” I facetiously asked. She paused, thought about it, and said it might be an option. 😀

  11. I use the hoe and shovel method because I have the probably mislead religious fanatic belief that they still have poison even when neutered. Now, perhaps you could have a defang program and that would fix it so to speak.

  12. mumsee, heard back from my friend, she said they don’t adopt out of the area as a precaution … she says: “The best thing for your friends to do is Google “border collie rescue Idaho” and see what comes up. I do know that there are rescues in Idaho and surrounding states. They should also check shelters in the area and on Craig’s List.”

Sorry, I was hoping that might work out.

  14. Kim – I so understand that awful, negative self-talk. I hadn’t had a problem with that for some time, but have been struggling with it lately. When I just can’t stand myself any longer, I throw myself in Father’s arms & beg Him to change my heart & my attitude. Now, I’m getting to the point, I hope, where I don’t wait until I can’t stand myself anymore to throw myself at His mercy.

  16. AJ’s QoD: My favorite dish to cook is an adaptation I’ve made to a recipe I found in the Whole Foods for the Whole Family cookbook many years ago. “Authentic Indian Beef Curry.” Except I don’t put in the curry because most in our family didn’t really care for it, so in our case, it probably can’t really be called “authentic”. 😉

I cook stew beef in water for a couple hours. While that is cooking, I get the family together and we prepare the other components of the meal. Originally, the recipe called for tomatoes, tomato sauce, curry powder, cornstarch and salt to be added to the cooked beef and simmered for about a half hour, but since not everyone here is fond of tomato, we simmer tomato sauce in a different pot, and those who wish to add that to the beef on their plate when they eat can do so. Also, we cook brown rice to serve as the bed on which the meat (and sauce) is laid.

The fun part is preparing the optional condiments to top the rice and beef and putting them in separate serving bowls. Shredded cheese, chopped tomatoes, green bell peppers, peanuts, pineapple chunks, and sliced bananas. Other optional ingredients the recipe listed, but that we haven’t used, were hard-cooked eggs, chopped onions and shredded coconut.

Putting it all together is a great family activity, and it makes for a very colorful and tasty plate of food! 🙂

  17. Good evening! Spent the Fourth with Hubby’s family. His sister and brother were in town with their significant others. His mom lives about an hour from us on Lake Conroe. She had rented a pontoon boat Friday, and that was fun for everyone. SIL has two boys, ages 2 and 5. The five year old and Becca play pretty well together, which was nice. Saturday, everyone came over to our house to swim and eat an early dinner. Sunday, Lindsey went to horse camp for a week and tomorrow Becca goes to Grandma’s for a four day camp, so we’ll have the house all to ourselves for four days! I’m sure I’ll miss them, but it will be nice to have some alone time with my spouse in the evenings. We’ve never been alone in this house (we’ve lived here for three years), so we’re looking forward to it!

My favorite thing to make is something we call sweet chicken. I like to make it b/c everyone likes it and it is incredibly easy: Four boneless, skinless, chicken breasts; 1 can whole cranberry sauce, about 3/4 bottle of french dressing, and 1 package Lipton Onion Soup Mix. Place chicken breasts in pan, mix together remaining ingredients, pour over chicken and bake at 350 for 40 minutes. Add some Uncle Ben’s Long-grain and wild rice and a side of broccoli and dinner is ready in a jiffy! Include some Mrs. Schubert’s yeast rolls and it’s perfect! You can make this even when you have children in various stages of meltdown–it’s that easy! My sister, when she had four children under age six, called the hours from 5-8 the “arsenic hours.” She said during these hours, somedays you either want to give it or take it! Always made me laugh when I was having “one of those days…”

  18. Sometimes mail order can be a pain.

Several days ago I placed an order, and “tracking” told me it would arrive today. By 8 p.m. when it hadn’t arrived, I went back and found “delivered to the back door.” Well, that made no sense–everything is delivered to the front door here, and it was raining and the front door has a “cover” and the back door doesn’t, and furthermore the dog was in the fenced backyard. But I checked both doors. No package.

I went back online, and lo and behold they somehow delivered the package to Nashville! Now, not only has this company sent me several orders since I’ve been married (all successfully), but the last order I placed with them I ordered through paypal and it came OK, so I placed this order through paypal as well. To make this all the more irritating, when I was in Nashville I tried unsuccessfully to sign up with paypal. The credit card that I used in Nashville had my old name, old address, and a different expiration date, and paypal just didn’t let me sign up. So now suddenly, after several orders through paypal to this address (and NONE to Nashville), paypal reverts to an old address (and old name) from an unsuccessful application? (And no, I don’t have credit problems at all; I have no idea what glitch made it fail to go through, just that I couldn’t manage to make it work in Nashville.) Hopefully the old lady who bought my house sees that the package wasn’t addressed to her, and she sends it back, and they somehow figure it all out. Because technically I “should” have caught that they were sending it to the wrong address, but there was no reason in the world for them to do so–they might as well accidentally send it to Chicago, because I used to live there too! And if I did “double-check” the address, my mind probably would have said “OK” since that was my address four or five times as long as this one has been!

  19. Even when they’re spayed?

The small fan I’d been using in the bedroom broke last night (the dial snapped off, and no wonder as it’s gotten some pretty heavy use for a lot of months/years).

So I took the larger version of the same fan (same brand, a Vornado which are wonderfully quiet yet powerful) that had been in my living room and put it in the bedroom last night.

But that still left a gap for a fan in the living room (I have a ceiling fan but the extra table top fan really helps through the summer).

I was surprised tonight, though, to find another bigger Vornado fan in storage in the spare room that I’d completely forgotten about. I think they were on sale a couple summers ago so I probably bought all 3 at the same time. Glad I don’t have to go buy another one after all.

Cheryl, good luck on the mail order mix up, hate it when that happens.

Our stories this week are focused on follow-ups on the dog shooting by police that happened in our area June 30 — it was caught on a very hard-to-watch video (I’ve purposely avoided watching it at my editor’s recommendation). Spent today trying to connect with various police departments about whether their officers have had extra training in how to deal with animals at a scene. I was surprised to see that it’s not all that uncommon that pet dogs are killed.

And tomorrow is car maintenance day at long last — I’m way overdue for an oil change so I’m dropping it off early in the morning. I also committed to an after-work meeting with some community folks to talk about how to get items in the newspaper; and Tess’ dog class is theoretically after that, but I’ll probably have to skip that tomorrow, there’s just way too much going on.

Karen, thanks for the red phone link, I’m going to check that out.

Ephesians 2: And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.

I pray we come to an understanding that we are made alive in Christ. That as the world embraces sin and promotes Romans Chapter one, which is the course of this world heading. We do not have to surrender our faith and values to the world. That Christ has made us dead to trespasses and sins, that we may walk and live a life worth of Him.
