Good Morning!

dday2

Today is the 69th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion.

d day

____________________________________________________

Also on this day in 1813 the U.S. invasion of Canada was halted at Stony Creek, Ontario.

In 1844 the Young Men’s Christian Association was founded in London.

In 1932 the first federal tax on gasoline went into effect.  It was a penny per gallon.

In 1936 the first helicopter was tested in a building in Berlin, Germany.

In 1942 Japanese forces retreated in the Battle of Midway during World War II.

In 1944 the D-Day invasion of Europe took place on the beaches of Normandy, France.  400,000 Allied American, British and Canadian troops were involved.

And in 1971 “The Ed Sullivan Show” aired for the last time.

Quote of the Day

“I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”

Nathan Hale

This song was released today in 1960. And yeah, I actually found a 1960 performance, minus the glasses even. 🙂

Today was also the day in 1962 that the Beatles auditioned for EMI records. And in “71, the final Ed Sullivan show too. So let’s have some Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show! Makes perfect sense. 🙂

Anyone have a QoD for us?

  1. Back when we were the Army Map Service, and a colonel (0-6) was in charge, he had a reminder board in the main entrance every 6 June. He was there. Most of them are gone now. My SS teacher is the last known living chaplain from WW II.
    The board said, Never Forget!
Most of the world has forgotten.

  2. I is funny the dates we remember. There are dates no one should ever forget, but time marches on and those who held those dates die and the next generation remembers, but somewhere along the third generation they start to forget. So many are not being taught the true reasons for that war and why it was necessary. We are no teaching our youth to allow such things in the name of peace and passivity.
We have a trip planned to Annapolis over the 4th of July holiday. My request this time is to go into DC and go to the WWII Memorial. It is the only one I haven’t been to see. Yes, the main reason is Grandpa wants to see his Sweet Baby Boy! He is six months old and starting to get his own little personality.
I regret that my BG won’t be going but she is spending her summer in summer school. 830 to 1:30, Monday through Thursday. It is taking up most of her summer, so maybe this coming school year she will pay attention and not fail anything. I would appreciate your continued prayers for her. Lots of people are stepping in to help her dad with her. People volunteering to tutor her, pick her up from summer school, etc.

  4. Interesting choice of quotes today, AJ. We visited the Nathan Hale homestead yesterday as part of our new England adventure. He said that famous quote as a way to annoy the British before they hanged him for being a spy. The quote comes from some British play that they would have recognized. One thing I learned that i didn’t know, hale was only 21 when he was hung.

We also went to niagara Falls Monday. Beautiful ,awesome wonder that God created for our enjoyment.

  5. I despise reality shows. I’m not a fan of The Batchelor, or the Batchelorette. What a stupid waste of time, a stultifying superficial atmosphere, and a flagrant bid for Lindsey Lohan style Celebrity Status.

That being said, I found the “Baby Batchelor” to be hilarious. These videos are simultaneously funny and sad because the maturity level of the contestants on the afore-mentioned shows have not progressed much beyond these:

  6. Okay, so I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan that first time–thanks for taking me back to my childhood, AJ.

The next day, my father bought me their album “Meet the Beatles” and I was a rock and roll fan at . . . six? Are you sure it was 1962? I thought I was eight . . . 🙂

Last day with the house to myself–except the deck guys will be here. Our good non-job-holding twenty-somethings were here for nine hours on Tuesday packing books and moving furniture. I think we’ve got room for the fam.

I’m sorry about their inability to get good jobs, but appreciate how hard they work for me. And of course, someday, there’ll be more packing and moving to do.

Got an idea how to turn my WWI novel into a trilogy, but NO time to think about it intelligently. My agent said we’d discuss it yesterday, so as I left the gym at 7, I said, “Okay, Lord, if you want me to turn this into three books you’ll have to give it to me.”

And there it was: “Family, community, world.”

Means nothing to you–yet!–but I muttered those three words like an incantation all the way home, sped into the house and made a new chart. Within about an hour, the Lord had showed me how to expand the (current) 24-page synopsis into three different, complete, yet complimentary books.

I think about what happened to me last week at Wheaton, yesterday’s inspiration and how this whole book idea has flowed and come together, and I can’t imagine the Lord who knows we need a house, will provide one.

    Amazing.

    A total blessing.

Thanks be to God who answers our prayers!

  7. I hate chain saws!
    I just hate chain saws.
They’re heavy, hard to start, dangerous, you have to be aware every minute. You have to be careful where you sit it down.
Then why do you use it Charlie?
Because it’s fast. I did in half an hour, what it would have taken half a day to do.
    But I’m almost as tired.
Not really, I can imagine my right arm if I had to cut through all that stuff.
Now, after a short rest, I need to clear out all that stuff.
This place is almost too much for an old man.

  8. Chas, last known remaining WWII chaplain? Newsworthy … Has the paper done a story on him?

The hawk woke me up again this morning (a male Coopers Hawk, according to my FB bird-expert friends after I posted a photo of him yesterday asking what it was).

Every morning he flies from tree to tree out front, chattering loudly all the way, before perching on the telephone pole that’s visible from my backyard. When he’s up there, he makes my dogs crazy, they bark and bark at him.

I’m doing some laundry and last-minute prep for the U-verse installers who should be here in a couple hours. This is going to save me a significant chunk of $$ over the cable service every month.

And it was a great excuse to give myself a 4-day weekend — as long as I had to take Thursday off, I figured I might as well take Friday, too.

  9. Ooh, a trilogy. 🙂

The Beatles were on Ed Sullivan in early 1964, I think. It wasn’t long after President Kennedy’s assassination I remember — seemed like it all provided a needed lighthearted break for the country at the time.

Those had been very grim and sad months through the end of 1963 …

  10. Donna, Dr. Jones was recognized a couple of years ago at a special event at Fort Jackson. Memory’s uncertain, but I thiink it was at the unveiling of a memorial of chaplains who were killed in battle.

  11. Good morning. I haven’t been around in awhile as things have been busy! Anything major happening that I should be aware of? I haven’t even read posts in over a week.
All of our extra-curricular activities have ceased (except for eldest’s riding lessons), and all of the recitals are done! Yay!!! Today is the last day of school for my girls. I’m ready for a much needed break from homework/scheduled activities. It’ll be nice to have some downtime in the evenings.

Kim: No, I don’t think one could get by with a speech invoking God that much today. It’s a shame. Glad to hear BG’s getting support. You both remain in my prayers.

    Makeitman: Loved the video’s!!!

  12. MIM, on our church in Falls Church, I used to help keep the toddler nursery on a rotating basis. I noticed that there is a difference between boys and girls, even at that age. It isn’t taught. They are different.

  13. Remembering does dissipate over time. I was at a coffee shop recently when Bob Watson walked in. I wanted to stand up and announce to the entire place that Bob landed on Normandy. (Interesting note, Bob has gone back to Normandy several times for ceremonies on the big anniversaries and every trip–five I think–were completely paid for by the French governement)

A couple weeks ago I was in Walmart and wanted to do the same thing for Keith Kennedy. I wanted to say, “Hey, do y’all know this guy swam in to Guadalcanal the night before the invasion and set up radio markers. That meant by dawn’s early light he was dodging the Japanese behind him and US Navy artillery in front. He was 16. Oh and he went on to Iwo Jima, Bougainville, Inchon and the Chosin Resevoir.” He is walking history.

I was at a picnic with Keith once and he asked a young Marine, “I served under Chesty Puller; do you know who Chesty Puller is?” The Marine answered, “Every Marine know about Chesty, sir!” At least the USMC teaches their own to remember.

You are correct. The Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964. But it was this day in 1962 that they auditioned for EMI Records. Today in 1971 was the final Ed Sullivan Show too, so I combined the two. 🙂

They’re advertising the Vacation Bible Schools on local radio in Hendersonville.
Do they do that anywhere else?
I haven’t heard it in Virginia.

  19. Chas, are those during the community events announcements or true ads? Do the churches charge a fee for the VBS? I have seen ads in the local community paper but never heard any on the radio, but I do not listen to Christian radio as much now as I use to.

  20. This announcement was during the 12:30 break in Rush’s program. There is no fee for VBS, it’s -in Baptist churches- an evangelistic outreach to children. The youngest get Bible stories. The older ones get a presentation of the Gospel through various programs.
Upcoming VBS schedules for FBCH, FMethodistCH, and Mud Creek BC were announced.

  21. Hi AnnMS — welcome back! I was wondering where you’ve been/what you’ve been up to, and was going to ask when I got to the computer today if anyone knew. And here you are!

As far as catching up with major events, are you aware that Cheryl’s brother-in-law died suddenly last week some time? He left behind a wife (Cheryl’s sister) and I believe five children, ages approximately five to fourteen. Cheryl has posted a few times on the daily thread and prayer thread since that happened. Such a heart-rending thing. 😦

  23. It is spelt Stoney Creek, and it is now a suburb of the city of Hamilton about an hour from Niagara Falls. That part of Ontario is steeped in history It is a fascinating place to visit. It is amazing that 200 years ago, that Canada fended off an invasion by the US and only 131 years later, they were allies invading occupied France together. The Canadians took Juno beach in Normandy. My grandfather, who was in a tank corps, was prevented from taking part in the invasion due to life-threatening illness. It wasn’t until the second part of the liberation of Holland that he was able to see active duty.
