Our Daily Thread 5-25-13

Good Morning!

Happy Saturday! 🙂

On this day in 585 BC the first known prediction of a solar eclipse was made in Greece.

In 1787 the Constitutional convention opened in Philadelphia with George Washington presiding.

In 1925 John Scopes was indicted for teaching the Darwinian theory in school.

In 1935 Babe Ruth hit his final home run, his 714th, a record that would stand for 39 years.

In 1977 “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope” opened and became the largest grossing film to date.

In 1979 an American Airlines DC-10 crashed during takeoff at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport killing 275 people.

In 1983 “The Return of the Jedi” opened nationwide. It set a new record in opening day box office sales.

Just a side note here since Star Wars has already been a hit on this day. Today is also the birthday of Frank Oz, the actor, puppeteer, and voice of many of the Muppets, as well as the voice of Yoda. That has to be “The Force” at work. 🙂 I’m just sayin’……

Quote of the Day

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”

Since it’s the weekend……. and it’s front man Klaus Meine’s birthday…….

This next one? Well blame Peter L. He’s the one who got it stuck in my head. 🙂 So I thought I’d do the same for you.

You’re welcome. 🙂

And it’s also this lady’s birthday. Which is yet another Muppet/birthday/Oz/Yoda/Star Wars movie connection on the same day coincidence. I’m tellin’ ya… it’s “The Force” at work. 🙂

And Frank Oz may have been in that video too, I don’t know for sure. But from the looks of Wikipedia it’s possible.

Oz is known for his work as a puppeteer, performing with Jim Henson‘s Muppets. His characters have included Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, and Sam the Eagle on The Muppet Show, and Grover, Cookie Monster and Bert on Sesame Street, among many others.

See how it all ties in…..?   😯

🙂

  1. So, they knew the earth was round in 585 B.C. Of course, you always have ignorant people. Elvera had an aunt who thought all this bad weather we’re having is on account of them men poking holes in the atmosphere with their rockets. This was in the sixties, even before the coming Ice Age.
But they (the astrologers, not astronomers in those days) were amazingly knowledgeable about the science. An Egyptian (I don’t remember the details, it’s been so long since I studied this.) calculated the circumference of the earth with amazing accuracy. He made some compensating errors, but was pretty close.
They also calculated, very closely, the distance from the earth to the moon.
One mistake they all made. Everyone made it until Copernicus invented the telescope. And he almost lost his life over this.
They thought the earth was the center of it all.

  2. The errors the Egyptian made had to do with errors in land measurement and remaining on the same longitudinal line. It was hard to do with their measuring instruments.

  3. I think I told you before, Chuck and I used to watch “Get Smart” together. He thought it was the funniest thing on. He loved Get Smart. I loved Barbara Feldon.

  4. Speaking of the earth rotating around the sun – just from observation, the closer to the equator one is the brighter the moon shines, which is probably because the moon is closer. Even when the moon is just at a quarter, there is still enough light to walk without using a flashlight. As for the stars, it is an astronomers paradise. The weather is mostly clear for seven months of the year. They should build an observatory here.

  5. Chas, Dad and I used to love to watch Get Smart together. Thirty years later my son and I loved to watch King of the Hill together. There have been a handful of comedies that were targeted at a male audience.

  6. (Okay, pretend this is Yoda talking- I do a pretty good imitation of him.)

Yesterday, posted this, Karen O did: Happy Birthday, Peter! This is your Heinz birthday. Enjoy!

A misunderstanding she has, I think. 57th year yesterday I started. Ends next May 24 it does. My 56th birthday yesterday was.

And AJ, jealous you must not be. The DVD set at Wal*Mart for $10 D3 found.

  7. Roscuro, the albedo of the moon is such that the moon’s reflectance is back to the direction of the source of the light. You learned in HS, that a mirror reflects the angle of the incidence, the moon reflects back to the source. Hence, it is much brighter when the moon is full because it is reflecting back to the sun, which is directly behind us. The relative distance between the latitudes has nothing to do with the phenomenon. The directness of the beams might, I don’t know. I haven’t thought that through. I probably won’t.

  8. Gorgeous weather here in northern California; perfect for a first birthday party.

I saw Star Wars at Graumam’s (sp?) Chinese theater–where it first came out. My college roommates took me after I finished finals. We stood in line for a couple hours–me not knowing what this film was about, they very excited. What a shock with the screen and the words, the sounds and the story. We loved it. I saw it six more times in the theaters in the next year!

Had I realized then, how much Star Wars would influence my life–I’m not sure what I would have done differently! 🙂 I didn’t know then, of course, I’d have three sons who would be total fans. Indeed, my oldest son said to me once, “We think maybe we’ve overdone Star Wars a little bit.”

    Oh?

“Yeah, CR just came down the hallway singing the Darth Vader Death March.”

CR (their little sister) was 2.

R2D2 will always be my hero. 🙂

  9. One of the first dates hubby and I went on was to see that Star Wars. I remember thinking how awful it would be to marry someone who liked those kinds of movies. I guess it’s one of the reasons we never go to the movies. (p.s. he’s sitting behind me right now watch “Stargate” on his laptop)

  10. I was on a singing tour all summer in ’77. A friend on the tour kept talking about seeing Star Wars when we got off tour. I had no idea what he was talking about. So when we got home, we got a bunch of friends together to see it. I was hooked. I went to visit my sister in Missouri (I still lived in Arizona those days) and went to the small town theater to see it. Mistake. I saw it first in a wide screen, Dolby sound theater. The small town had an old theater with small screen and hi-fi sound. So when I got back to Tucson I had to go see it again at a “real” theater just to hear the music the right way.

Oh, and that same summer was the 2nd Chapter of Acts/Phil Keaggy “How the West was One” tour. Totally missed that one.

  11. Linda, I remember when my hubby and I went to Star Wars after hearing all the accolades. Then after watching, we wondered why. We did acknowledge it was well done, but not our cup of tea, I guess. It is a good thing, though, that we are all different or we would be missing many inventions and services in this world.

  12. Peter – I actually knew that! When I read your mention of starting your 57th year, I knew that meant you were turning 56.

Then later, I read your “Boy oh boy! 57 on my birthday! Hooray!” (referring to the comment #), & I forgot the previous fact I knew. :-/

Over on Rants & Raves, you mention going to Connecticut for vacation, & asked “Isn’t there one of us Wanderers who live there?”

That’s me! My little town, Stafford Springs, is about half an hour from Storrs.

Is your daughter’s pen pal a student at UConn, or a resident of Storrs?

  13. I showed four wonderful houses yesterday. One was newer construction on the bay with a nod to the past. The next was originally a bay hotel built in 1 892. It had big, wide porches and a a two story boat house. Next was as 1936 bay cottage with only two sons r s,the original architects drawings. It’s property line is the highestelivation from Mexico to Maine (along the coastline). Trust me, my lungs felt that climb back up from the the bay. The last house was built in 1940 and was overly decorated circa 1985. It needs a lot of work but it was the ONE. it has good bones, it has personality. It is going to need to be lovingly restored but it is wonderful. The view is unbelievable. It is the one we wrote the offer on. Selfishly I hope they get it. Listening to the couple talk about what they will do to it, I can’t wait to see the house after the restoration.

  14. So, does anyone want to hear about how it went with Forrest yesterday, with his mommy having left in the wee hours?

Too bad, I’m going to tell you anyway. 🙂

As I mentioned the other night, Emily went to work with Lee yesterday, & they left at 1:00a.m. (yes, this is his normal time for leaving for work). Emily had told Forrest ahead of time about this. I slipped into Emily’s bed after they left, so that if/when Forrest woke up, there would be somebody there. (He & Emily share a bed, although she will be getting separate beds for them soon.)

He did indeed awaken a couple times in the night, & I gently reminded him that Mommy went to work with Papa. He pouted a bit – you know that look when a little one is about to cry, but they don’t – the first time, but was crying pretty hard the second time. After reminding him again that Mommy went to work with Papa, he settled down. After all, Papa drives a big bread truck, so going to work with him must be pretty cool. After pondering this for a while, he said something about Papa’s truck, then went back to sleep for a while longer.

He was fine when he awoke to begin his day, a little before 7. A few times throughout the morning, he indicated he missed his mommy, & also a couple times he told us, “Mommy & Papa be back”, nodding his little head, to illicit our reassurances that of course Mommy & Papa will be back. Cute & kind of sad at the same time.

All in all, he did better with this difference in routine than I thought he would. So if Lee decides to have Emily work with him (alternating days with Chrissy), I think Forrest will adjust pretty easily.

  15. Aw, brave little Forrest — Sounds like he’s becoming a regular little trooper. 🙂 So glad you were there through the night for comfort when he woke up.

Kim, all those properties sound wonderful. Good luck with the offer you’re writing up, hope they get it. Yours must be a fun job at times, seeing people find and get their dream homes.

  16. Thanks, Kim. Yes, I’ve seen the pictures you’ve shared of your cute little guy.

Donna – It blesses my own heart so much to know that we have provided our sweet little grandson with the security of our love & our home. A few minutes ago, he was running around naked, but with snow boots on, saying “Me big man!” 🙂
