Our Daily Thread 5-24-13

Good Morning!

It’s finally Friday! 🙂

And on this day in 1738 the Methodist Church was established.

In 1830 the first passenger railroad service in the U.S. began service.

In 1844 Samuel F.B. Morse formally opened America’s first telegraph line. The first message was sent from Washington, DC, to Baltimore, MD., and the message was “What hath God wrought?”

In 1883 after 14 years of construction the Brooklyn Bridge was opened to traffic.

In 1935 the Cincinnati Reds played the Philadelphia Phillies in the first major league baseball game at night. The switch for the floodlights was thrown by U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt.

And in 1994 four men convicted of bombing the World Trade Center were each sentenced to 240 years in prison.

It’s this lady’s birthday today.

This guy too.

And on this day in 1970 Weird Al Yankovic recorded this and 4 other songs for the movie UHF.

Anyone have a QoD for us today?

  1. Chas- How about I celebrate by posting these early? I had hoped to get here a little earlier.

Yes, folks, I begin my 57th journey around the sin today. I was born in ’57 and in 365 days I will be 57. So here is a “fun” QoD: In what year did you/will you be the age of the year you were born? In 2014, I, mumsee and Kevin B (I think) will be that age.

  2. And I see I share a birthday with Bob Dylan. He can play the guitar better than I, and write better songs, but I think I can sing better than he.

  3. I was just catching up reading the “News” thread and was amused by the idea of requiring citizens to complete an algebra problem for their vote to be counted. My sister owns a grooming shop on Capital Hill and hires local kids as helpers. She requires them to pass a little test, which includes the question “The cost for grooming is $60 and I give a 10% discount when customers come back within 6 weeks. How much would we charge for that?” Most can’t answer. For one candidate that she really wanted to hire, she dumbed it down to “How much is 10% of 60?” and he still couldn’t answer.

  4. Good morning all. I can finally join the baseball conversation. Mr. P and I are going to a Mobile Bay Bears game tonight .
I am also dusting off my license, picking a couple up at a private airstrip, and showing them property on Saturday.

  5. I thought he really meant sin. How very profound, I thought. … 😉 But it’s early, my mind is still half asleep. And I woke up with a headache after having a very strange dream in which Hillary Clinton was a leading character.

Still trying to shake it off.

  6. QoD, I thin that would be this year. I was born in 56, doesn’t that make me 56. I’m not good at math. In Rickey’s world I wouldn’t be able to vote. 🙂

Happiest of birthdays to Peter L.!

And he probably does sing better than Bob…

    Thanks for the funnies…

  8. I was 30 in 60.

At the Y today, a lady from Connecticut asked “Are you done?”
And a man from Illinois asked “Are you done?”
I have noticed that Yankees always say “done”. I have alwaya said “finished” when I had finished something. e.g. The hamburgers are done, so I’ve finished cooking.
Is that a north-south thing? Or is it just me?

  9. Kbells and I are in the thick of it: 56. But just two more weeks for me.

Adorable granddaughter #3 turns 1 tomorrow and we have a house full of guests from the other side of the family, which is fun. The birthday girl is so proud of her ability to walk she never sits down–and wears a big grin all the time. Fun.

Adorable granddaughter #2 will get a little sister in September. At that announcement, I bought her a Sally Lloyd-Jones book about being a big sister. Her mother reports they’ve been reading it over and over but she’s not sure AG#2 understands the implications!

Of course all the girls will hit age=years much sooner than I did!

  10. Yes Happy Birthday Peter!

Math problems would be good for some Christians to learn. Some of the fringe element do very fuzzy math. Our church has an apologetics forum and recently Lyn Hybels spoke along with a Palestinian Christian Sami Awad. Then it was an open discussion on the topic of the Palestinian condition in Israel. So the fuzzy math goes like this. NCCC = Chuck Smith (who does not run a tight enough ship and has allowed contemplative prayer to be taught in some Calvary Chapels) + Lyn Hybels (who is the better 1/2 of Bill Hybels) = seeker friendly mega church = emergent theology, which = Brian MacLaren, Rob Bell and > Jim Wallis who = Marxism + Obama-loving which all = apostasy.

    I kid you not.

  11. Hey, Peter did Mumsee’s and Kevin B’s math problems for them @ 07:17:58. Isn’t that cheating? 😉

Having said that, I will copy InButNotOf’s answer. 🙂

  12. The shorter equation is NCCC = Sami Awad = Palestinian = terrorist = Satan.

These Christians don’t seem to allow for freedom of speech or even freedom of thought since you cannot have anyone speak at your church who does not have a spotless record of their orthodoxy. Never mind their orthopraxy being even fuzzyier than their math.

Duh, Linda, you need to use a calculator to do those hard math problems. 😉

I remember an uncle telling me that only turkey is done, people finish. I had never thought of the difference before than and probably always used done. Now I try to use finish, but am not fussy about what others say. I don’t know if it is a regional difference in speech, however.

Then 1st, 2nd and 3rd Arrows will have a long time to wait: 1st will be 90 in ’80, 2nd 93 in ’86, and 3rd 97 in ’94. Whew, I’ll be really old watching all of that happen! 😛

  17. QoD: 2068

Done vs. Finished: From a dweller in north climes who isn’t a Yankee – ‘done’ is informal and abrupt in tone; ‘finished’ is formal and polite in tone. Usage depends on setting. One inquires “Are you finished?” while serving as a waiter in an establishment, and then asks “Are you done?” to one’s small child who refuses to eat her peas.

    Like

  18. Chas, my mom was always careful to say “Finished.” When someone said, “I’m done,” she would make some smart-alecky comment, like, “Well, you don’t look like you got burned when you got done, anyway.”

Linda, when I was about 18 and trying to get my first job, I had to take a written math test at one place, a small hardware store of some sort. He had 10 questions on it, and all of them were of the sort like this: “A customer wants to buy paint that will cover his bedroom walls at the cheapest possible price. His bedroom is x number of square feet. Brand A costs $ per gallon and covers x square feet, and Brand B costs $ per gallon and covers x square feet. Which brand would cost him less, and how many gallons would he need?” When I turned in the test, the manager was impressed. He said it was the first time he’d ever seen someone get all 10 questions right. But I didn’t get the job, because I wasn’t available after dark. (I had to walk or ride a bike, and Mom insisted that we could not get jobs that would have us out after dark. So that meant my winter work hours were only up till maybe four or five.) I remember that both the manager and I were disappointed, and he was hoping I could stretch my availability. But it wasn’t my “rule,” and I couldn’t break it.

    Happy Birthday, Peter!

As a person born and raised in the south, I usually add a word to “finished.” I would probably say, “I’m finished doing whatever.” If someone is using something I need to use such as when wrapping gifts I say, “Are you done with the scissors or tape?”

  22. Math: My husband stopped by the grocery store one night after work, and the cash registers weren’t working right, so the checkout girl couldn’t hit the button that tells her how much change to give. Hubby didn’t have the correct change, and the cashier had no idea how much change she owed him. She tried penciling it out on a notepad, but she couldn’t do the math, so had to ask another cashier to figure it out for her.

Another time when a child came to our house selling something, I gave her $40 for products costing $24.50. The girl had no idea how much change to give, and neither did her mom. The mother was confused about how many quarters to give (I think she was starting from $.00 instead of $.50) and finally just told me she didn’t know how much she owed me, but that she probably didn’t have enough money with her anyway. So I told her I probably had enough quarters lying around to add to one of the $20 bills so I could give her the correct change. I quickly excused myself and found 18 quarters and counted them out for her after giving her the $20, otherwise I don’t think she would have known if I’d given her the correct change or not. 🙂

The most incredible thing I’d ever heard, though, was about the time my husband bought one thing at a yard sale for an even dollar amount (I think $2.00). He gave a teenage girl a ten-dollar bill, and she had to ask her mom how much change she owed hubby. Yikes!

    OK, I’m done now. 🙂

  23. I’m admittedly horrible at math. The other day I had to figure out vote percentages for a story after Tuesday’s election — another reason I love the ‘smart’ phones & computers we have at our finger tips nowadays.

I was good at giving change, though, learning that skill while working at Sears through college (and years before cash registers “told” you how much change to give, we really did have to figure it out ourselves).

I’m jealous of the day Pastor Roy is going to have.

  25. Nobody died in the bridge crash. Please don’t say “miracle.” The word makes no sense.

A while back Cheryl told me that I should read Stroebel. I have read him. He convinced me of nothing. I am pretty sure that if I read more of him he would convince me of even less. I will die (though probably not today) and then I will cease to exist. Why do you care? If you are sure you are going to an imaginary place called Heaven, you should just bask in your good fortune and congratulate yourself.

Tonight it was mole poblano, a Mexican dish of chicken and a sauce made from 40 kinds of chili peppers and unsweetened cocoa, all served over rice. Mmm! Later we’ll have chocolate cake and a double chocolate ice cream with peanut butter. Better start that summer walking program tomorrow.

I think someone is coming over, the way Mrs L and D3 are acting. D3 keeps getting texts and the two whisper when they think I don’t know it. Of course, it would be a surprise to Mrs L since she said she didn’t do enough house cleaning today for company.

And D3 gave me a present: the complete first season of “Get Smart”!
