Good Morning!
On this day in 1831 the New York and Harlem Railway was incorporated in New York City.
In 1859 work began on the Suez Canal in Egypt.
In 1898 the U.S. declared war on Spain. Spain had declared war on the U.S. the day before.
In 1901 New York became the first state to require license plates for cars. The fee was $1.
In 1928 a seeing eye dog was used for the first time.
In 1953 U.S. Senator Wayne Morse ended the longest speech in U.S. Senate history after 22 hours and 26 minutes.
In 1967 Colorado Governor John Love signed the first law legalizing abortion in the U.S.
And on this day in 1980 in Iran, a commando mission to rescue hostages was aborted after mechanical problems. While evacuating, a helicopter and a transport plan collided and exploded, killing 8 U.S. servicemen. The mission was to free American hostages that had been taken at the U.S. embassy in Tehran on November 4, 1979. The event took place April 24th Washington, DC, time.

Today’s music is from Jerry Leiber. I know, who’s he right? Well he’s a songwriter, not a singer. But you’ve heard his work…
But he and his writing partner were not fans of Presley’s version of their song. Despite this, they wrote several more songs for him, including this one…
His other work included this classic….

We had a bit of excitement last night with 7 explosions total, but only 3 injuries. I didn’t feel any of the explosions but others near me said they did.

I hadn’t heard the news this morning, Kim, and didn’t know about that. I hope the injuries aren’t serious.

You’ve all heard about the phony tweet about a bomb at the White House, and the president injured. And that it caused a $134 billion drop in the stock market.
I see in today’s Times-News that it wasn’t caused by traders. It was caused by computers selling on autopilot without human intervention.
This makes me wonder what would happen if some cyber bandits were to infect the program with malware. They could shortsell the market, then cause a selloff.
Somebody ought to worry about that.
But not me.

OTOH, maybe the tweet was meant to do what it did.

Ricky posted last night that the army is blocking the SBC website.
DoD: How can they block access to a website?
ie. if I enter SBC.com, what prohibits mee from getting it?

I heard about that, Kim. The line that struck me was,
“Kind of thought maybe my neighbors were getting into a fight with someone”
Oddly, not a surprising thing to say in Alabama.

A couple of people on my facebook are saying that the Boston bombing was planned by the government and one used the term “call to arms”. Of course these two people (distant relative, ex coworker) both have a history of being a little screwy, but they have friends who agree with them and they feed each other.

I read about the ship explosions on Yahoo. Says the explosions were thought to be accidental. Makes sense. But I wonder how two barges could explode simultaneously unless they were moored together.
It didn’t say.

KBells, …and only in the South did no one immediately think terrorists. We are used to hearing sonic booms and bad weather. We had storms yesterday afternoon. One friend didn’t feel the blast but thought it was lightning again. Several others felt it but just kind of shrugged and posted on FB asking if anyone else felt it.
I talked to a friend this morning who used to do a lot of legal work for several of the shipbuilding firms. He said there is a hobo community who live nearby. Hopefully none of them are injured. The firefighters decided to let it burn off. The barges were empty–just the gas fumes set off these explosions.
I have been shocked at the people I know who are buying into the Government Conspiracy Theory on the Boston bombings. Smart people, not your average Joe.

KBells, I saw one conspiracy theorist on the news saying, “I knew the minute the bomb went off . . . ” Knew what? That he would create a conspiracy theory? And you are right, they feed each other. How long will we have to wait for the explosions in Alabama to have its own theory?
Adios

KBells,
They scare me, and I am a conspiracy nut. 😯
I think Alex Jones went off his meds about a week ago judging from his website. He had pictures of the possible bombers. A couple were actually the right guys. But now he insists that the other photos are co-conspirators the govt won’t tell us about. And that the whole thing is a false flag by the govt.
And somewhere in America, a box of Coco-Puffs is missing it’s cuckoo. 🙂

Chas,
It’s easy to do that. The DoD controls the servers that provide the internet service on post. They just block it from there. If you try to access it you get a Webpage not available, you cannot access that site message. They do that for tons of websites all over corporate America as well. Schools do it too. Peter L. can’t watch videos at school because they’re blocked. You can block certain content and keywords as well. It’s actually quite easy. You can even do it at home to keep your kids from going to sites they shouldn’t.

AJ, 9:43 I didn’t know that! I’ve had no reason to be concerned about it.
It doesn’t seem a serious problem that any site, including SBC, might be blocked from an official computer. They can go home and access the SBC, freecell, and any other site they want.
If I owned a business, I would block lots of sites.

Chas,
The worst part is their supposed reason for blocking it.
“The site you have requested has been blocked by Team CONUS (C-TNOSC/RCERT-CONUS) due to hostile content,” the message read. 🙄
http://radio.foxnews.com/toddstarnes/top-stories/military-blocks-access-to-southern-baptist-website.html
“The U.S. Military has blocked access to the Southern Baptist Convention’s website on an unknown number of military bases because it contains “hostile content” — just weeks after an Army briefing labeled Evangelical Christians and Roman Catholics as examples of religious extremism, Fox News has learned.”
Welcome to Obama’s Army, where PC stupidity and hostile behavior towards any one on the right is the order of the day. Mostly thought up by clowns who never served a day in the military. It’s all one big social experiment now.

Kim, I read about those explosions (natural gas — only 3 injuries though?) in Mobile last night. We have LPG tanks in our community that are the target of activists who are trying to get them moved, so I’m sure I’ll get an email from them saying “See!?” this morning. 🙂 Not that it’s not potentially dangerous, it is. But we live at the port, there’s lots of dangerous stuff all around us, potentially speaking.
I haven’t seen much about the conspiracy theories, but no doubt they’re out there. Sigh.
But I’m writing about some more mundane things today. After the big barricade standoff yesterday, I’m trying to check out the city of LA’s new bike lanes that have caused several of our streets to be re-striped. A car lane was lost and the markings are highly confusing to many motorists.
One woman told me she’d probably never leave her condominium complex again, she just can’t figure out where she’s supposed to be driving on the road anymore with all the broken lines, solid lines, boxed-off areas … 🙂
Weird part is that there simply aren’t a lot of bicyclists on those streets. But there are a lot of cars and they’re backing up something awful now (with no bikes in sight) during heavy traffic hours. 😉
Go figure. Your city at work. They mean well, though.

Like the triune conspiracy. It reminds of when four women from our local pregnancy counseling center when to Tahiti to train women for the same ministry there.
(Maybe it was Fiji? Some south seas island country)
Anyway, these four mild-mannered middle-aged women arrive in the country and the army is interrogating anyone looking like a possible terrorist. They waved these women through without a second glance.
I’ve always laughed at the image. It was the power of the Holy Spirit moving mightily–perhaps the most dangerous group who’d entered the country in days!

Donna, my town is a designated biking town. They have street parking, bike lanes, and motorist lanes. They have it such that two cars (I drive an Xterra) can’t pass each other on certain streets. Then you add in the beautification and flower beds and it really is an obstacle course. 🙂
We don’t do conspiracy theories in the South. We just figure some Redneck Bubba said, “Hey ya’ll. Watch this.” and blew something up on his way to winning the Darwin Award.

My Mom loved Elvis too.
He’s finally growing on me. I was fine with him growing up, but then had a traumatic Elvis experience in my 20’s. One night my downstairs neighbor named Charlie got drunk and passed out on his couch with Blue Christmas blaring. On repeat. For 6 hours thru the night. People were banging on the door yelling, while he slept in full view thru the locked door’s window. He kept 6 apartments up all night. After that I didn’t like any Elvis for years. Now I kinda like him, but never Blue Christmas. Ever.

Seems like Elvis was cool in his early years, late 50s early 60s? Our era was the Beatles, the Who, Rolling Stones & all the British groups — Elvis was for “older” people. Like my friend’s mom.
Then in the ’70s he really became, well, not so cool at all. But looking at the earlier clips from his movies, I can see how he would have been captivating.

Saturday will work much better.
