  3. Miss Alabama has a head start. She’s a celebrity. That could work both for and against her. When you get so many pretty girls together it gets confusing; each one is prettier than the other. But the other one wasn’t so bad either.
    I generally don’t watch the programs.

    Ha, because I write for a lifestyle magazine I was once called upon to judge a beauty contest. At first I thought I was being punked, but they really did want tomboyish me as a judge. It ended up being fun and the winner fulfilled her year long commitment and is now rising in the country music world, which all us judges knew was really what she was all about.

  6. I just finished sifting the flour that I bought in the big Saturday market this morning. The flour tends to contain small, wriggling things if left unsifted – one of the joys of living in a warm climate. I got the flour from a shop run by Berbers, who have come here as traders here since the Ghanan empire ruled the region a thousand years ago. Africa is a very multicultural place. There are at least three different languages spoken commonly in this little village and most villagers can speak at least two. I am just learning the trade language and I was able to say what I wanted clearly today!

    Aren’t those little wriggling things just more protein for the meal? Maybe when baked they would give the appearance of poppy seeds?

  8. QoD- Vince Lambardi’s old team, with Aaron Rodgers will beat all the others, including the Manning-that-won’t-go-away. If only the KC Chiefs had gotten him instead of that mile-high team. Can’t root for any team playing at elevations higher than 1500ft above sea level. Unless of course, Tucson ever gets a pro team, which I doubt.

    And around here, everybody is rooting for Miss Illinois, since she comes from one of the small towns nearby.

  9. Just wondering if anyone uses quilts to keep warm about this time of year? Do you do quilting or know someone who does? A friend of mine is making a quilt for me now. I told her I could use a lap quilt for when I am at the computer and the heat pump sends out room temperature air which in effect feels cool because of the wind chill effect. Heat pumps save money on the energy bill, but they make a house feel drafty. We only get warm heat coming from the vents when it gets down in the thirties and the regular heat comes on.

  11. It is a noisy day here since someone is doing tree work. The mulcher is quite hungry and ill-mannered with all of its gobbling noises. I was on a virtual prayer call earlier, and found the mulcher produced poor background music for a time of prayer.

  12. Beauty queens and football players! Quite a winning combination. My husband and son keep up with football, and I need to ask them about their preference. As for the beauty queen, I hope the one who will most glorify God with her win will be the winner.

  13. Good Morning all….the sun is shining but it is sooooo cold…brrrrr. We hear Manning doesn’t throw so well in sub temps….it will be interesting football in Denver today…there is a 30% chance of snow for us at 7400ft…
    Amen to your hopes for the Beauty pageant winner Janice…may she glorify our Lord and not herself…I’m not into the pageants…but, when I watch the news and the winner is giving all glory to Him…it just makes me smile and thankful 🙂
    Have a most blessed day everyone….I’m off to find black slacks in 100% cotton…do you know how difficult that is nowadays? Everything has at least a tad bit of spandex in them…sheeshh!!!

  15. We Californians are bearing up (barely) in this cold snap.

    But tonight I think I’ll leave the heater on “low” at least — it was 52 in the house when I finally got out from under the multiple layers (wool blanket, quilt AND down comforter) this morning.

    Outside I think it was close to freezing last night, tonight again they’re saying.

    FYI, my husband has some concerns about some current issues with Javascript; turning it off doesn’t allow me to post on here. So I’m probably going to be a lurker for a while.

  17. I saw something about javascript security problems on pc’s yesterday, some suggestion went out to disable it, but I can’t remember the source or what the issue really was.

    We have pc’s at work but I didn’t ask anyone about it, guess I figured the IT guy would either take care of it or say something about it. And I forgot all about it by the time he came through the office on Friday.

    Here’s the story about the warning on Javascript. I’d note that it doesn’t seem to have been confirmed by Oracle/Java.

    “The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is advising people to temporarily disable the Java software on their computers to avoid potential hacking attacks.

    The recommendation came in an advisory issued late Thursday, following up on concerns raised by computer security experts.

    I went to the Dept. of Homeland Security website and found this.

    “Systems Affected

    Any system using Oracle Java 7 (1.7, 1.7.0) including
    •Java Platform Standard Edition 7 (Java SE 7)
    •Java SE Development Kit (JDK 7)

    All versions of Java 7 through update 10 are affected. Web browsers using the Java 7 plug-in are at high risk.”

    It goes on to recommend disabling Java.

  22. We had a young male friend visiting a friend running a mission in Uganda several years ago. He’s tall,young and played soccer with the kids. Several Ugandans thought he was David Beckham, and invited him to the mountains to a resort for the weekend so he could help choose Miss Uganda.

    He went under his own name, but he got to be a judge! 🙂

    52 in our house this morning; the heat came on when it got that low. I like to sleep in a cooler room, but not as chilly as Mumsee’s boys! 🙂

    Just watched the Ravens and am now watching the Packers. Not a big NFL fan but usually favour the Steelers and Packers. And lately have liked the Ravens.

    After a trip to the dog park & walking the dogs, I’m watching “Cowboys & Aliens.” Pretty awesome, in part because there’s a border collie in the cast. Along with the guy who’s the new James Bond, who reminds me of Steve McQueen “back in the day.” 🙂 And Harrison Ford …

    What’s not to like about this movie?

  29. Quilts–We have a nice Nepali quilt on the bed. Elephant motif of course. We got it there two summers ago. Hubby loves quilts, as do I. I used to make them with my grandmother. She would put her quilting frame in front of the couch and would not let any of us kids watch TV–boys included–if we weren’t quilting. I have a double wedding ring quilt that she pieced together that I need to finish. It is from all the flannel jammies she made for us growing up.

    It is 25 degrees right now!!! Hell hasn’t frozen over, but paradise has.

    Glad Ray Lewis gets to play another day. Bummer about the Packers. They just could not cover a pass. But that Cali team sure looked good. Coming from Charger country we are used to have second and third teams that we follow. Go Seahawks!!!

  35. Getting that autistic diagnosis has been interesting. We used to wonder that our six year old in glasses did not seem to have any imagination, no ability to play on his own. He was only able to take what others were playing with and throw, break, or destroy when he first got here. Now he is excitedly playing cars after a fun hour of flying airplanes with his little sister. They are racing their cars against walls and each other and other things, just like typical children. It is so heartwarming to see!

  43. I just finished reading The Shack by Paul Young. It’s a good book, very interesting. A novel; Young used the scenario of the worst disaster that could happen to a father and weaved an intricate scenario where Mack (the father) meets God at a shack where the incident happened. The story is a vehicle for a lot of theological teaching, some pretty deep. I was interested in all of it, but it may get dry in places for some people. I recommend it, and suggest staying with the parts that seem a bit far out.
    279 pages, an easy read.

    We’re still on total depravity (in our progress through Romans).

    But we’ll be getting to the good news shortly. 🙂 (And the Good News is always included in all of our sermons, we hear both law and gospel.)

  50. I think I’m ok — Java was built into Mac operating systems up to snow leopard, but after that it was not. My operating system is the one that followed snow leopard.

    Looks like Java has had previous (similar) problems over the past year as well.

  57. I have automatic updates on both my computers (Dell and HP), along with Norton Antivirus and neither one has indicated a problem with Java. Isn’t that enough to make you suspicious? My husband, who uses Java all the time at work with a robust IT department, doesn’t know anything about it and says you would be turning off your operating system.

    I’m not doing anything.

  59. Michelle – I get updates from Sophos / Naked Security on Facebook, & they’ve been warning of a problem for a while. Today they posted that it should be disabled as soon as possible. (Random mentioned it to me in a comment on his blog, too.)

    The first part of the article I linked above says…

    ‘IMPORTANT: The article below was written in August 2012, in response to a security scare involving Java.

    Although that particular scare has now passed for users who have kept their Java installation updated (or disabled Java in their browser), the article below is still relevant as vulnerabilities continue to be found in Java, and exploited by malicious hackers.

    Most recently, in January 2013, a new zero-day flaw affecting Java in web browsers was exploited. Apple and Mozilla are doing things to help fight the problem for their users, but you may decide that you still need to take steps yourself.”

    I am still able to use my computer & the internet with it disabled.
