Our Daily Thread 1-3-13

Good Morning!

Over the next few days some things will change around here. I’ll be trying some new things and seeing how it looks. Things like comment numbers may be lost briefly. I’ll try to cause as little disruption as possible. But I am a man after all, so I am prone to just pushing buttons to see what happens. Don’t worry, I didn’t see any shiny red ones that said “do not push” or  “self-destruct” or anything yet, so you should be OK.

😉

Who has a Question of the Day?

  1. Did anything good happen yesterday that made you think 2013 was off to a good start? I had quite a few good incoming calls I dialed over 200 people yesterday and have a guy flying in next week to look at properties in the 800k to 1,550,000 range . The rich don’t panic they just move to the next best investment .

  2. Florida diserved to lose that game.
    Sounds good Kim.
Kim’s correct. Obama thinks he’s going to get their money.
As I said before, the wealthy don’t have income, as such, they have wealth.
In college, I knew a guy whose family owned a business. They didn’t own a car, they drove the company car.

  3. Tammy, 81 on yesterday’s thread – yes, I am laughing at you 🙂

Donna, I too made it through day 2 of Bible reading. Maybe we can spur each other on this year?

Yesterday was good – I made it safely to work and back on icy, wet, slushy roads.

  4. QoD: I survived the day yesterday, having gotten only 2 hours of sleep the night before (and another hour in a later-morning nap), without getting crabby and stressed from lack of sleep, like I always expect I will. (And then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.) God showed me His grace is sufficient, and my mood doesn’t have to be ruled by my circumstances. God is so much bigger than that, and that’s a good thing to learn.

  5. Today, January 3, I did Day 4 of my bible reading plan. I had wanted to start it on a Monday, so December 31 was the day I began. So far, so good. I’m reading 3 chapters a day, Monday through Saturday, from the Old Testament, and have gone through the first 12 chapters of Genesis now.

I’m reading one chapter a day (Monday through Friday) of the New Testament with the kids, and we’ve stayed on track with that, too, having finished Matthew 3 yesterday.

My other goal for bible reading this year, besides staying with the plan, is to do my personal bible and devotional time before I get on the computer to check what’s going on here and the other blog I frequent, to check email, etc. It’s a temptation to not put first things first, even though I know being in the Word is the top priority.

Feel free, anyone, when you see me show up here in the morning, to ask, “Six Arrows, have you done your bible reading yet today?” Accountability is good. 🙂

  6. AJ, please avoid the red button marked “DANGER” and the yellow one with “CAUTION” too (the “caution” one should only be used if you really need it, “danger” not at all).

  7. I started a read the Bible in a year program too. So, far I’m just winging it, until I can find a guide that I like. Hubby has started doing a quiet time in the morning as well.

But I see in you that we have an over achiever among us. You’re on Day 4??! Yikes, girl.

Cough, cough. Now I know that big cloud of dust was in my face this morning. Cough.

Well, I found a good deal & managed to acquire a bicycle yesterday (first one I’ve had since giving up my mountain bike several years ago — which had become a little “too much” bike for me, a person who now yearns for a softer, gentler bike. 😉 ).

It has a big seat, a basket and a bell. It’s a sweet “Vanilla” color. Think “Murder She Wrote.”

It’s still inside the Jeep, I haven’t even unloaded it yet. But I’m hoping it will be helpful in my other goal which is to MOVE more. No grand goals, I just hope to get out and about a little bit more this year, do something different. Rides along the waterfront sound perfect.

Now I’m reconsidering something a dog trainer suggested to me years ago — getting one of those poles that attaches to your bike so your dog can run alongside.

I know, that’s probably a recipe for disaster. Still … The thought intrigues me.

If I drop out of communication, you’ll know what happened. I’ll be careening across the state pulled on the wild whims of a crazed border collie — A Disneyland style Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride in real life! Wheeeee ….

  9. A friend of mine, Diane Stortz, has just published a book called A Woman’s Guide to Reading the Bible in a Year. She’s used this system with a group of friends and it sounds terrific. I’ll pick up a copy tomorrow at work for myself. (She’s also one of our authors).

  10. You all were so helpful last week when I wrote the blog about entertaining children, do you want to help me today? This time I’m going to write about the incident some four years ago when I came to WorldMag Blog in a tizzy of fear about my son driving from Seattle to Idaho. Does anyone remember? And if so, what do you remember? 🙂

  11. Good morning. Youngest daughter spent the night out last night, so I was looking forward to sleeping in. Alas, she called at 7:15 to tell me good morning and I was unable to fall back asleep after being up ’til 1:00am. She was so chipper, I couldn’t be mad at her, but oh how I wish I could’ve caught a few extra zzzz’s.

I’ve been doing laundry from our trip to the ranch. Lots of sheets and towels. All the Christmas decorations are still up as we don’t take them down until Epiphany (which falls on January 6th). The house always looks so barren when all of the decorations are put away…

  12. Donna (11), about that over-achiever thing: I’m behind on everything else, I might as well be ahead on one thing to balance things out a little 😉

  13. Hubby seems to be adjusting well to the overnight work hours he’s got now. There’s a lot he’s got to do at work, and he doesn’t get tired while there, nor while he’s driving home, thankfully. But he does fall asleep quickly once home. He got home this morning just as I was getting up and starting the day. I walked back into the bedroom less than five minutes after he’d gone to bed, and he was already sound asleep.

Do you know how hard it is, though, to keep a relatively quiet household for eight hours or so with young, exuberant children around and two adults (hubby and 1st Arrow) who work nights? Did I mention that one of them sleeps upstairs and the other sleeps downstairs? We don’t exactly live in an area where I can take the kids outside for 8 consecutive hours a day this time of year to run around and burn off energy.

Thankful that my hubby’s overnight work hours will only last a couple weeks. In the meanwhile, I guess it’s time for me to get creative! Maybe lots of going back and forth between the inside and outside. Meaning lots of on-and-off with the snowpants, boots, coats, hats, mittens… 🙂

  14. I remember how quiet the house can get when children are getting into things they should not be getting into. Maybe you need to invest in some “discovery” treasure boxes for the children to look through quietly. Or diaries to read for the older ones, etc. Even decorating the house quietly for a surprise party for when the sleeping ones awaken might be doable. Once when young and “quiet” my son had unrolled toilet paper from the upstairs bathroom all the way down the stairs in our split level and almost into the kitchen before he was discovered. Some things like that are so unexpected and just funny.

  15. Cheryl,

    Uh-oh. I wished you’d mentioned that sooner.

    😯

So what would someone need to do if they did push the “Danger” button by mistake? Hypothetically speaking of course, for I would never do such a thing myself. But if time is of the essence, you might wanna tell me quickly.

Does anybody else hear that ticking sound, or is it just me?

  16. Yes, my story about Stargazer was I couldn’t sleep for fear of him driving from Seattle to Jackson Hole in one day when the weather was calling for a high of 4. He had little experience driving in snow and I had a terrible foreboding. I made him check in every three hours, begged everyone I knew to pray.

Some on WorldMagBlog understandably chided me for my fears–someone’s child was on a ship to the Middle East and I certainly understood–but I couldn’t shake it.

When I hadn’t heard from him in four hours in the afternoon, I phoned him and asked where he was. “Somewhere outside of Missoula standing on the side of the road. I just totalled my car.”

The prayers of the righteous availeth much–he hit black ice, spun all over the road, missed a bunch of cars, struck a barbed wire fence, rolled the car three times and came to a stop facing backwards by on the wheels.

“What did you do then?” I asked.

“Unlatched my seat belt and climbed out the back.”

Not a scratch on him; the EMTs checked. Jeep was totaled.

For those of you who prayed that day for my child, or any day for any of us, thanks.

I got an e-mail in my spam folder entitled “MarryMeSugardady”, and the text part said “Beautiful women wnat to marry wealthy men”.
They have no idea who they are sending these to.

If I were wealthy, I surely wouldn’t go for someone soliciting blindly online.

  18. Just got home from work and my husband tells me that my Auntie Annie has had a severe stroke and will not live out the week. She is 91 and said just yesterday that she wanted to go home to heaven. Auntie Annie was a bonus grandma for my kids and was always included in our immediate family get togethers – she will be greatly missed.

I guess we’ll be heading to Calgary for her funeral (we would have gone for Christmas but couldn’t afford it, so I guess we’ll make the trip now). It’s a 10 hour drive on good roads. Please pray the roads will be in good condition for when we are driving. Thank you.

Oh, and I finished my day 3 Bible reading 🙂

  19. Oh, and I just talked to my sister. She and I had done a bit of a tribute at Aunt Mary’s funeral this summer (Aunt Annie’s sister) but she doesn’t think she’ll be able to say anything this time (her favourite sister-in-law is also near death from cancer) but she’ll stand up beside me while I do the tribute. Guess I’d better go work on what to say.

  20. Rather a rough day for 6th Arrow. She threw up once this morning, and then spent most of the rest of the day in bed, sleeping and waking and moaning, and was a little feverish this afternoon. After the one time throwing up, though, she was willing to drink water and able to keep the fluids down, for which I am thankful.

She’s up and around now, playing and concerning herself with matters concerning the cats: “We should train the cats to throw up in the litter box”. 😉

  21. Sorry about the auntie, Kare2012. And, yes, that’s scary about the wolf in your yard! The worst we have around here (but no close encounters for me or my pets) are coyotes.

And sorry to year 6th Arrow is still under the weather, sounds like virus of some kind that (hopefully) is on its way out.

Michelle, now I remember that story. Wow.

Walked the dogs already. And I got the WordPress for Dummies book tonight. 🙂 But meanwhile, I’ve been blogging a lot more and am slowly becoming more acclimated to the platform. But the book will be handy to keep as a reference.

I suppose I’ll need to watch for the “caution” & “danger” buttons, though.

  23. Apparently, I have reached the age where everything I do embarrasses my almost 13-year-old daughter. I never had this issue with my sons. But, with my daughter (my youngest) anything I say to her friends (or the clerk in the store, or other people) necessitates her trying to direct or shush me in the background. Tonight, I was told not to run a few steps across the parking lot, because I look silly when I run. When I play games, I shouldn’t correct bad plays. When I dress … well, you get the picture. I am apparently the most embarrassing person on the planet. 😦

And, when I pointed it out to her tonight, SHE got offended that I am always finding fault with her. Sigh

I mentioned to her that I am the mother, and that it is my job to train her correctly, and that I *rarely* correct her in public or in front of her friends (barring something really bad … and she’s a great kid, so I haven’t had to do that much.)

I also pointed out that she is NOT my mother, and so she should refrain from correcting me unless 1) I ask for her opinion, or 2) I’m doing something really outrageous.

I also explained that I’m a person too, and that I have enough things to feel poorly about, so I don’t need a daughter who is constantly finding fault with me.

Apparently, pointing this out makes ME the one who finds fault. 😦

    Here’s hoping it’s just teenage hormones. 😦
