News/Politics 1-2-13

What’s news today?

This is an open thread, so you tell me.

The joke that is the fiscal cliff deal continues to be the big story I guess.

Only in Congress can they screw up, not do their job in the first place, and then act as if we face a catastrophe of monumental proportions if we don’t act fast. Maybe do your job right the first time, and add a permanent fix, and this rush wouldn’t be necessary. But this is Congress, so I guess that’s asking too much.

  1. That’s what happens when you keep kicking th can down the road. It doesn’t really go away. They know it’s going to happen.
Like an Air Force guy I used to know who once served in one of the Minuteman sites under the plains of North Dikota.
“It didn’t happen on my watch.”
As long as it doesn’t happen on his watch, just kick the can again..

  2. An excerpt from the WSJ article: Obama’s Tax Bill Comes Due (Or another way to view the fake fiscal cliff crisis.)

“So Congress has passed a bill to avoid the tax cliff, hallelujah. This is the way to look at it if you have a pre-Copernican view of politics where Washington is the center of the economic universe. The better way to see it is that the tax bill on the private, productive part of the economy is now coming due for President Obama’s first-term spending and re-election.

The Senate-White House compromise grudgingly passed by the House is a Beltway classic: The biggest tax increase in 20 years in return for spending increases, and all spun for political purposes as a “tax cut for the middle class.” But taxes on the middle class were only going up on January 1 because the politicians had set it up that way, manufacturing a fake crisis. The politicians now portray themselves as scrambling heroically to save the day by sparing the middle class while raising taxes on small business, investors and the affluent.” [emphasis mine]

  3. Not only did Obama try and kick the can down the road, but he wrote an executive order ending a pay freeze for federal employees. However, for whatever reason, it seems most in both houses of Congress don’t want to increase their pay.

  4. Good morning everyone. I came into work today and spoke to a friend here in Oklahoma City. He said that the selling price of my AK-47 has tripled in value at the local gun shows. We shall see. If MS Feinstein has her way, I might be able to negotiate a trade for a 338 Lapua.

  5. Has anyone seen the “Demand A Plan” spot with Hollywood actors demanding something be done about gun violence and have you also seen the counter ads with shots from their movies and TV shows of all those actors with guns in their hands. Can you say “Hypocrite”?

  6. In the coming New Year, 2013, both Groundhog Day and the State of the Union address will occur on the same day.
This is an ironic juxtaposition of events. One involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to an insignificant creature of little intelligence for prognostication.
    The other involves a groundhog.

  7. Often during the dinner hour around here, we have lengthy discussions on current events. Sometimes they are based on something the real has posted or another of you. Sometimes something Bob has emailed. Today’s was the one on budgeting that he also posted on here. Thanks to all you contributors to the betterment of our citizenry.
