  1. It’s Friday You know what that means!
It means we’re still here. It was supposed to end at 6:11 EDT.
That is when the Sun turned around at the Tropic of Capricorn, Winter was declared, and the Sun headed north.
It also means that we’re going to have a fund raising auction Elvera made fourteen brownies to auction off. They usually bring about $12.00. I get the best part, that is the edges she cut off.
PeterL will link to the cartoons.
The cold front came through and brought some needed rain. But the downside is that it’s 34 degrees outside.
As AJ says: Four more days!
    Merry Christmas!

  2. It’s 3.2F up here this morning – beautiful, snowy and frosty.
Chas, brownie edges are my favourite part too (that is, if the batter actually makes it into the oven before being eaten!)

  3. Good morning all. I have to finish the shopping today! I also have to grocery shop!

I also am teaching an agent a special class on writing contracts before she really, really screw something up!

Luckily I am working near home today and I slept all the way to 7:30! Wow, I NEVER do that.

  4. I’m like KBells, just when I think I’m done …

I may wind up going out tonight or in the morning for the last-minute things to pick up.

But I am doing a story today that requires me to go out to our arts and crafts marketplace, so it just could be I’ll spot something there that’ll work for the 2-3 little things I still need to grab.

The remaining cards can be dropped in the box this morning, though I may have to do another 1-2 of those, too, but for now I think this should be about it. I’ve also been trying to update my Christmas card list as I go this year, it’s pretty out of date I realized.

It’s cold (for us) and crisp out there, but the air very dry. I think they’re saying we may get a little rain here or there through the weekend.

For now, though, the view is clear as can be out there — you can see the snow on the mountains looming over the harbor in the distance; and Catalina Island 26 miles across the sea, as the song goes. Everything looks so close you could touch it.

  5. Good morning. I guess I better do as Chas says.

I had a (all too) interesting day yesterday. Now I know the meaning of stranded. We were supposed to get up to 3″ of snow with strong winds. Well, school was let out at 1PM. When I tried to leave an hour later (we were awaiting the delivery of our Christmas hams) I couldn’t get out of the parking lot. Several teachers were stuck. Those that got out of the parking lot either had to stop somewhere or ended up in the ditch. Three of our school buses and several students got stuck on the road. Anyway, I was the last teacher to leave the school- at 7PM! Others got rides and would come back today to get their cars. But I had no way to get all the way home (I live the farthest). Once the ground crew got my car out of the lot, I drove two miles then had to wait an hour while three cars got unstuck from the middle of the highway. It’s a north-south road that has corn fields on either side, so the wind had blown snow over it. After that, I got on the main highway and had no trouble. It’s an east-west route that had snow plows on it most of the day. I finally got home about 9:45. Glad that there is no school today, as yesterday was the last day until January.

  6. I continue to be a sporadic Wanderer. I like being here on a more regular basis. Our son is home from college so I am at home more where the computer is still having issues. I thought it was fixed—but, no, wrong about that silly assumption.

Yesterday our family and another office friend went down to Warm Springs, GA to the Bulloch House for a belated celebration of my birthday. It was a wonderful lunch buffet in an old home decorated finely for Christmas. y leg is still giving me some problems and was worse for all the sitting in the car so it was really paining me when I got up to leave. Then it was pouring rain so we had to stick around for a bit in the front area of the restaurant. I got to feeling real sick and fainted and threw up while I was passed out. The EMS got called and my vitals were all fine and I chose not to go to the hospital. It was not a pretty scene.

I am feeling better today. I hope my internet connection stays up so I can get this posted. I hope the rest of you are doing better than I am.

On a positive note, my husband passed the Tax Preparer’s Exam which is a new requirement for the industry. He had little time to study for it so he was not sure how he would do on this first time. It is an either Pass or Fail exam.

  7. Pouring rain here and tonight is the big cookie baking extravaganza with all my daughter’s high school friends. 20 expected for dinner and cookie decorating–at least!

I’ve got to get my desk cleared of!

  8. Michelle,

I’ve been clearing mine for the last hour. It was quite messy.

Also, I enjoyed the totem pole story over at your blog. They’re pretty cool, but I wouldn’t know where to put it.

  9. Good morning, or afternoon, or whatever it is where you are!

Janice, glad to hear you’re feeling better today. I’ve passed out twice in my life, and it’s a weird feeling right before the faint and right after coming out of it.

This morning, about four hours after the Winter Solstice, 5th Arrow declared, “It’s STIIIIIIIILL winter!” 🙂

Happy First Day of Winter, all.

  10. Ha. I missed that 3 inches vs. 3 feet. What’s up with that Peter? Are you guys snow wimps? Surely that can’t be … 😉

Good to see JaniceG and Scott R.

  11. Depending on other conditions and how well roads/parking lots are cleared, three inches can be enough to snarl things up. Also, if up to three inches were expected, they could have conceivably gotten more. Add the wind Peter mentioned, and you have drifts. If they had ice underneath, that could really get bad.

We only have a little snow here so far, but it rained all day yesterday, and it’s pretty ugly out there. I did a little bit of shopping day before yesterday, and hope somehow not to have to do more until after Christmas. (Before I married, I was used to getting groceries approximately every two weeks. My husband was used to running to the store every couple of days. I try to limit runs to a couple of times a week now, but it isn’t always possible–I had to go to the store two days in a row this week, for example, since two different family members needed prescriptions.)

  12. I said “supposed to get 3”. I think we got more. But when you’re dealing with 50 mph winds and flat land, that snow piles up in drifts. And when the snow drifts up against the back of cars, the cars cannot back out of parking spaces easily. Thus, they get stuck. One would have to live in the Midwest to get it.

  13. We celebrated SIL’s birthday last night, the first time we’ve all been together since last summer. Grandson got home from school in time to make him a lemon meringue pie, while Granddaughter made a cheese cake. Daughter made his favorite, Chicken Divan, for dinner. The Fine Young Man got off work early and was able to join us for a lovely informal family dinner [notice that Grandma didn’t have to do anything but show up 🙂 ]

  14. Nice post on Cindy Woodsmall’s blog:

    Beloved Readers,

Within minutes of it happening, we heard about the Sandy Hook school shooting, and it laid miserable grief and heartache on us. Like many of you, I’ve wrestled with it since, unable to comprehend what the parents, siblings, grandparents, and loved ones are going through and will go through for the rest of their days. When I read the following poem, I felt it brought a little perspective, and I wanted to share it. It’s written by Cameo Smith, Mt. Wolf, PA, with Andrea Marie.

Twas’ 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38,
when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven’s gate.
Their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air.
They could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there.
They were filled with such joy, they didn’t know what to say…….
They remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day.
“Where are we?” asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse.
“This is heaven.” declared a small boy.
“We’re spending Christmas at God’s house.”
When what to their wondering eyes did appear,
but Jesus, their savior, the children gathered near.
He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same.
Then He opened His arms and He called them by name.
And in that moment was joy, that only heaven can bring.
Those children all flew into the arms of their King.
And as they lingered in the warmth of His embrace,
one small girl turned and looked at Jesus’ face.
And as if He could read all the questions she had,
He gently whispered to her, “I’ll take care of mom and dad.”
Then He looked down on earth, the world far below
He saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe.
Then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand,
“Let My power and presence re-enter this land!”
“May this country be delivered from the hands of fools”
“I’m taking back my nation. I’m taking back my schools!”
    Then He and the children stood up without a sound;
“Come now my children, let me show you around.”
    Excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran;
All displaying enthusiasm that only a small child can.
And I heard Him proclaim as He walked out of sight,
“In the midst of this darkness, I AM STILL THE LIGHT.”

  15. Hello. Hello? Hello! Sure is quiet around here. And when I say quiet, I mean quiet. Husband took all of the children Christmas shopping. And I mean all. All eleven plus husband, meaning the twelve passenger van we drive is full. Meaning no room for me. Meaning I had to stay home. From shopping. Bummer. Just kidding! Party on! I have been out doing my chores, singing my favorite songs to the One I love. Enjoying the incredible place where He has placed us for a season. Knowing they are all having a delightful time for a few hours and now, I shall go take a nap, wrap some presents, listen to music, read a newspaper, sit in the hot tub…

  17. I’m glad Mumsee and Kimberly had nice days. And Peter got home safe.
Elvera’s brownies sold for $15.00 at the auction. She didn’t get a nickel, but she was thrilled that someone would pay that much for her brownies.
They are good. There were 17 of them.
It’s good to see Janice back. Still don’t know about Roy’s wife.

  18. So, as mentioned, I napped and read the paper. Thought I would share a little tidbit. We have a nearby jail with an annual tradition. Every year around this time, they release two prisoners. They need to be close to release, have a record of good behavior, and indicate effort to contribute at the jail by something like working as a trustee. This years selectees were a man in for DUI and a woman for burglary. They are absolutely delighted to be released and be spending Christmas with their children and other loved ones. A little tradition started by a judge about twenty five years ago. Based on some Bible story. I have seen some of this judge’s work and am very pleased with him. He has a very good idea of how to help children in trouble with the law. Wait, did I say it was based on a biblical story? Hmmm. Here? In the land of separation? How could it be?

  19. Thanks, Chas, I am glad to be here at least while the computer connection allows for it.

Loved that story about releasing the prisoners, Mumsee. He sounds like a wise judge. We could use more like him.

It is so nice to see the familiar faces, dogs and other icons on here! Just seeing them makes me happy.

I am looking forward to Christmas Eve services at my husband’s church first and then at my church. It is nice to be connected with two neighborhood churches. In some ways it is like being doubly blessed.

  20. 57! (minus 20)…

Because no one else is here and this won’t get much farther before I go to bed in less than half an hour and I’ll get up in the morning and the West Coasters will probably run this up to 100 talking about pets and children.
