A fun question of the day because I need a little fun in my life right now.
What is the gift you are most looking forward to giving someone this Christmas?
What is the gift you most desire to receive?
This is a secular question not a theological one. Have fun with it!

I just read this comment from Peter on yesterday’s Daily Thread,
Wow–that’s harsh! Right on a par with, “Why don’t you go play in traffic.”

I have a niece who is finally coming through the “rough years,” you know–the ones Kim is in. She’s not been a winner–yet- in the looks department but she’s the one family member who probably has a shot at a Noble Prize in science.
She’s that egghead brilliant.
And she knows it.
I found a sleep shirt the other day that’s perfect for a 15-year-old on the cusp of coming into herself: it features a cute yellow cartoon bird wearing glasses and it says, “Chick with brains.”
I laugh everytime I look at it and wish I could be there when she opens it.
What do I DESERVE to receive?
Nothing.
But I think I could use a dustbuster . . . 🙂

The gift I am most looking forward to giving is the large, loose-leaf style Crock Pot Cookbook for Granddaughter. I gave her a Crock Pot for her 22nd birthday last June and she loves it, with this book she’ll find new recipes to try and a place to keep the ones that she’s downloaded from the internet.
As far as what I’m most looking forward to getting, it’s Grandson coming home from school in Montana on the 18th.
I don’t need things, but I’m curious to see what sort of trinkets GalPal comes up with when we exchange gift bags. We usually get each other several small items, mostly amusing. For instance, I found my beach-loving friend a necklace with a pendant that’s inscribed “Life is better in flip-flops.” Of course the pendant is a tiny flip-flop.

Since Emily had Forrest, I have learned that in the past 20+ years, many, many more vaccines are expected to be given to babies & young children. Emily is not anti-vaccine, but she has done a lot of research on the various vaccines, & decided to be selective about which ones she’ll let him be given, & to delay many of them.
Unfortunately, many pediatricians these days will refuse to continue to treat a child who doesn’t get all the vaccines, or delays too many (in their perspective). And today, Emily was threatened with this by Forrest’s pediatrician. 😦
To top it off, he accused her of being neglectful (on a different matter). Why? Well, a couple weeks ago or so, Forrest had fallen in the yard, & somehow the nail on one of his fingers pulled way back. She’s been treating it by soaking it in soapy water (with tea tree oil added), then soaking it in peroxide, examining it for any signs of infection, then re-bandaging the finger. It’s been healing well, with new nail growing under the old, & the old one about to fall off soon.
The pediatrician examined the finger. Says there’s NO sign of infection & NO sign of a break. But even so, according to him, she “should have” brought him in when the incident first occurred, & not doing so, even though she was very diligent to treat the finger herself, he says makes her “negligent”. Also, even though there is NO sign of a break, & Forrest is not in any pain, & there is NO swelling, the pediatrician ordered an x-ray.
Emily is a well-informed, concerned, excellent mother, & is in no way negligent. We are now checking with women I know in our area to try to find a pediatrician who “allows”/encourages parents to make their own informed decisions about vaccinations.

Karen: Perhaps Emily’s pediatrician is more concerned about his take-home pay than Forrest’s well-cared for injury. She’s right to look for another. Kind of makes me wonder how people my age managed to survive our childhood injuries.

Karen: Vaccines are normally left to the family doctor here. And parents are left with the responsibility of keeping track of the vaccines. I live in the land of free gov’t health care but these types of decisions are left to the parent, the gov’t just picks up the bill. And kids don’t see a peditracian unless the family doctor isn’t able to handle the problem. A vaccine? Sometimes the family doctor will pass that task off to the clinic nurse. Or the vaccine is given at school by the public health nurse (after parent permission of course)
As for the fingernail …. an x-ray? I wouldn’t even bother my family doctor with that….. and remember I don’t pay the bill.

Peter,
I know he has no intention of changing, and I’m not counting on anything. But the our intentions and God’s intentions are often at odds, and I just find it hard to let such blatant inconsistencies pass without commenting. In fact, I kind of enjoy it.
My comment about your post, though, was kind of tongue in cheek, although apparently that wasn’t apparent. Suggesting that Stephen publicly insult Islam the way he insults Christianity here just seemed like you were wishing him to be killed the way you would be if you told someone to play in traffic.

Karen,
I most definitely would NOT go back to that pediatrician. He will not back up Emily should he ever need to, and threats are no way to run a practice. I would simply never darken his door again, and would definitely find out from other parents who a good pediatrician is in the area who cares about his patients, but trusts the parents to make choices for their own children and handle their minor health needs.
