  7. Chas, the first time I saw that 4 out of 5 dentists recommend this site I asked if Drill was the fifth dentist since he had not shown up.

    Panera has great sandwiches. Glad you were able to make it there, AJ. It is a relief when people check in here.

  8. I miss Panera sandwiches…haven’t had them since going gluten-free four years ago. Do they have any GF sandwiches? I’m guessing they probably have some soups that are gluten-free, but there’s nothing like sinking one’s teeth into a good sandwich.

  12. Janice, I thought of that same thing — to check their website. They have an allergen statement that says many of their menu items contain or come into contact with common allergens, including wheat (not surprisingly). 😉

    I don’t see any GF sandwiches listed, but my guess is that they may have soups and salads that don’t contain ingredients with gluten, although inadvertent gluten contamination seems very likely in that environment.

    Cross-contamination isn’t as much an issue for me as it would be for someone with celiac disease (I have what could be called gluten sensitivity, rather than gluten intolerance). It doesn’t damage my gut, but I still try to steer clear of it as much as I can because of other negative effects I experience.

    Anyway, even if they did have GF sandwiches, I wouldn’t be able to indulge in them very often because we don’t go out to eat much because of the cost. So maybe it’s better that there isn’t much I can eat there; I don’t feel like I’m missing out on so much. 😉

    Still, though, soup and salad made by someone else sounds good right about now… Ahhh, fun to dream sometimes. 🙂

  13. AJ’s not powerless. His home is. We have lovely weather here, and because of Sandy, we’ll have this for several days. Too bad those east of us are getting hit so hard.

    And if 4 of 5 dentists recommend this site, make sure the chocolate the quote mentions is of the dark variety. It is actually good for your teeth, as it has enzymes that are good for your mouth, and doesn’t have as much sugar.

  17. Oh, thanks, Kevin! I was wondering to whom I was speaking!

    Tomato basil soup sounds good. They must not use wheat as a thickener, then, as is sometimes used in tomato soups.

    Croutons on salad — yes — I forgot to say anything about holding the croutons one time at a different establishment, and I wound up with a beautifully put-together salad with all these lovely croutons all over it! Up to that point, I’d remembered to request no croutons when I’d go to a restaurant where a waitress would come take your order, but at fast-food-type places where you’d go to the counter and place your own order, croutons would generally come separately in their own little bag.
    Until that day, that is. Oh, well, live and learn! Some of my kids were with me that day, so they ate it, and I ordered another salad for myself, without the you-know-what. 😉

  19. Mumsee, I’d suggest contacting a specific organization (e.g., the Red Cross or Samaritan’s Purse) and ask their counsel. In some situations, volunteers are specifically kept out of an area until the government lets them in, so they might be better off either volunteering through a specific organization or at least finding out how that sort of thing works by talking with an organization that deals with crises regularly.

  20. Well, I think I might have some idea why the post office is going bankrupt. . . .

    I ordered some photos last week from an online company, and paid for the Express Mail option. I got an e-mail Thursday that they had shipped. I figured they might come Saturday, but if not, then they should come Monday. (With any other company, I’d have thought Monday “for sure,” but I know better for the post office’s “fast” services; for some reason they’re less reliable than first class.) They still haven’t arrived, and I just looked back at the e-mail that says they were sent, and found it had a tracking number (since it wasn’t a link, I didn’t notice it when I looked at the e-mail before). Well, according to tracking the package is now “out for delivery,” so it should come with today’s mail (which usually would have arrived by now).

    But more interesting was the route it took to get here: it started in Kansas and Missouri, but then went to Colorado before it went to Michigan and finally Indiana. According to mapquest, whether one goes by miles traveled or hours of travel, either way the trip was three times as long as it needed to be. And, of course, several extra days of the customer waiting, and a few extra chances for the package to be mauled or drop-kicked.

  21. Yes, he has looked into Samaritan’s Purse. They have an application deal. We are thinking more along the lines of an on the ground church who might know of some old people needing trees moved or plywood put up or some such thing. I doubt the big organizations would want a bunch of fifteen year olds with chain saws, but you never know.
