Good Morning! 8-31-12

Look for the poll later tonight to vote on the name of this, the Daily thread. If you have a suggestion there’s still time to get it in. I will be out this afternoon with my lovely wife and daughter at the Great Allentown Fair. A little pre-holiday fun before school starts. Enjoy yourselves, and have a great day.

Quote of the day, from C. S. Lewis.
“Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither.”

  1. Good Morning! It’s a beautiful day here. We had a colorful sunrise, and it’s not too warm—yet. I’ll be back for the poll (I didn’t get to vote in the last one}. Have a great day all. 🙂

  2. I tell you what. Our friend AJ has taken to this inter-web a ma thing a bob blogging like a duck to water. Great ideas he has had so far. I am loving it.

I start my new job on Tuesday so I won’t be around as much during the day. I am not a creative type person so I haven’t come up with a name for the blog or the open thread yet. I am liking the ones I am seeing.

I won’t be around much today, but, I wanted to say hey and hope you all have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend. We are watching our three grandkids tomorrow and having a little surprise party for the 9 and 7 year olds….Sam’s bday is today and Grace’s will be Sunday….oh happy day! I am continuing to pray for you Kim that the transition into your new adventure will be a smooth one 🙂

Chased a bear TOWARDS my house yesterday – he was pretty fat and healthy looking though, so I don’t think he’ll try to eat us.

  5. Good Morning Everyone. I am really enjoying what AJ did here. For those that enjoy the daily Bible Study. It is up for viewing and comments. I will be working on developing some useful links to other sites like Grace to You and Al Mohler’s Blog. Take care and God Bless.

  6. Good morning. It is our last regular day of class for a while. We are more than 40 days into our school year. We will be travelling on Tuesday, and will be out for almost two weeks. We are heading up north and will get as far as Maine. There we will visit some friends. Yapa will also get to see Boston, a first for her.

  7. Morning everyone.

CB, so your name just disappeared? Weird. Try clicking on your gravatar, if you can on your phone, which should take you to your Gravatar profile, and try editing your profile from there. Otherwise, no idea. What phone do you have – iPhone, Android, other?

  9. Hey Cheryl! I think I’m reading a book you wrote. I bought it a couple months ago based on reviews I had read of several books about teaching Sunday School – the reviews were best for your book. I finally started reading it yesterday (since Sunday School is starting up again in a couple weeks) while waiting for my new car battery to be installed (my husband tried to do it but the bolt holding one of the leads were too corroded).

I just happened to notice the author’s name, Cheryl and a last name starting with a D (maiden name, of course). I wonder, I thought, as I started reading and tried to connect any experiences you mentioned in the book with ones you’ve mentioned on the blog. Haven’t found any yet, but I Googled you and found your web page, and found lots of stuff I recognized on the About page. (Though it still says you “will be marrying soon.”)

I know you suggest reading it one chapter a week, but at our church we each only teach a few Sundays a year, so I’m “cheating” and reading more. (Besides, I’m on the Christian Ed committee and want to be able to loan the book to others once I’ve read it.)

  10. Is the book about teaching adult or children’s Sunday School? We use a Lifeway curriculum in our children’s Sunday School but we can use other ideas, too. Are there children’s activities in the book?

  11. I haven’t read that book, Pauline, but knowing the source, I’ll bet it’s great. 🙂 Kare, I’m impressed! Chasing bears. My dogs would love to live wherever you live. The cat, too, probably. She’s fearless.

We do worry about wandering suburban coyotes where I am from time to time. Rare that they’re in our neighborhoods, but they are on open property not far away and they’re typically not shy about trotting down a sidewalk in L.A. Friends have lost cats to them. 😦

Why are we celebrating today, I forget. Someone’s birthday?

Joe, can you post the link to your blog again?

Debra, I like “Our Daily Thread.”

Wow. It’s a 3-day weekend for me (I think, unless I get recruited to work Monday which I wouldn’t altogether mind because of the overtime).

On tap for me will be lots of kitchen reorganization. Don’t tell Cheryl, but I decided to take the plunge and I ordered a new refrigerator that will probably get delivered in another week or so.

It will be so nice to have an efficient refrigerator — it even has humidity-controlled crispers.

    But best of all?

    It’s cute. 🙂 🙂

  12. We need an “app” for the blog now so we can easily click on it from our smartphones. 🙂

    I think AJ’s a natural. A blogger is born.

Cheryl, hoping you can get Misten’s pic back today …

  13. Since this site is a little more out of the limelight than WM was, maybe some of our regulars who have been shy about it before can now get avatar pics. And one handy feature with those, too (you can still use an obscure display name to keep your real identity private) is you can add your location.

One of the fun things to me about WV was always the aspect of interacting with people from all over the country (+ Canada and beyond).

  14. Donna, I was going to suggest that. I have a Palm right now, but I’m upgrading to an Android. The new phone might arrive today, actually. An Android app for this blog would be cool. It looks like WordPress has a plugin to easily create an app. It says you don’t need programming skills to create it.

AJ, great job on this blog, appreciate it very much.

  15. Good morning/afternoon, depending on where you are. My internet went out last night, and was out most of the morning today. Glad to be able to finally post.

HRW, I never noticed the 1984 on your avatar until now; the small avatars at WMB didn’t make it stand out like here, although now that I know what it is, I can read it on your WM avatar as well, just barely. What’s the significance of 1984 for you?

  16. Thanks Matt, I’ll try that when I have a little more time to mess with it – an android. I think this might have happened logging in on the phone.

  20. Hey guys and gals. I will not be posting any Bible studies of the Memorial day weekend. The gentleman I study with via e-mail will be having family over and he will not be able to participate. So I posted an open thread so folks can discuss biblical topics along with prayer requests. Let me know if you like this. If so, I will post an open spiritual thread along with the Bible Study. Also if anyone would like another link available such as Spiritual Hymns etc, let me know. Take care and have a great weekend.

  21. Well, I appreciate the comments. I hope that I look better than my dog, although he is very cute!!

However, my photo is not nearly as accurate anymore either. I have lost 40 lbs. since April, and hope to continue. 😉 My whole family has been involved, and I’ve lost the *least* of anyone. My husband has lost over 60 lbs.!

So, I will have to get some new photos out at some point. 😉

  22. Heads up about WMB. Mickey (editor) just came on and said the other site goes live at 8:00 p.m. (I am thinking that’s EST). So, if anyone wants to leave a last posting there then it is time to say good-byes, crying is allowed BTW.

I put a sheet cake on there in case Mumsee does not get over there in time to put hers on there. Enjoy! And the party goes on here thanks mucho to AJ.

Somebody once tried to convince me that Change was good. Oh yeah, Obama. Both of just make me sad.

But I’m also excited for the new this time. This must be how Chris (Tingles down my leg) Mathews feels when Obama speaks. 🙂 Don’t laugh, you’re gonna see how right I am when the DNC starts. 😉

  37. Hi. I missed most of the party. But it was worth it going to see 2016. Chas should have warned us it was a horror flick. 😉 Seriously, though, go see it if you get the chance. I was disappointed that it didn’t spend more time on Obama’s next four years, but there is enough info about what he believes that one could surmise the future if he gets another four years.

And now we cannot even get WV in the archives. I wrote a complaint to Mickey, asking to at least have the last one archived for us.

And there isn’t even any ore of Mumsee’s cake here!

And now instead of a Manning, we have to see a Yankee for AJ’s avatar! At least it isn’t A-Rod.

  38. Ha! We can google to find individual past articles. Here’s one I found.
    http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:x5-kLaxqoU0J:online.worldmag.com/2011/05/25/the-tree-of-life-offers-a-theater-experience-like-no-other/+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

But alas, googling “Whirled Views” brings us only to the current screen shot, even when typing in the Whirled Views specific address. And pulling up articles on the current screen that used to have comments attached, all the comments are gone. It is rather disconcerting. Indeed we no longer exist, it seems.

Oh well. Our confidence is in Christ, and anyway we know we exist.

  39. I used to like going back to old threads and finding arguments that I had used in certain discussions and links that I used to support my arguments, to refresh my memory and help me out in a discussion that I was having in the present time. Can’t do that anymore. 😦

  40. FYI, I copied the last three days of Whirled Views (as well as the note we were being shut down) to a Word file. So if anyone wished they had copied down so-and-so’s e-mail address or anything like that, I have those files. The last one I got from tonight’s thread was one by Toobizy at 8:54 (I don’t know what number, as those don’t copy over), but I do have the vast majority.

  41. BTW, to get the link I posted above, I googled and found some articles, and then I had to do the archive thing on google. When I tried to do that for today’s WV, it wouldn’t let me, not even when I typed in the address it gave me to the address bar. So there are some limits to seeing archives, but apparently also some potential.

  42. Okay, so if I hold the cursor over the date stamp of a post it gives me a post number. But they are not in sequence, since it is the post for the entire blog, not just this thread. This should be post number 84 or 85, but the one above this (Matt Y @ 9:47pm) says its #565.
