In 1944 Marseilles was captured by Allied troops during World War II.

In 1959 in the Peanuts comic strip, Sally debuted as an infant.

In 1962 the first live TV program was relayed between the U.S. and Europe through the U.S. Telstar satellite.

And in 1982 Gaylord Perry (Seattle Mariners) was tossed out of a game for throwing an illegal spitball.

On this day in 1762 Ann Franklin became the first female editor of an American newspaper, The Mercury, of Newport, RI.

In 1775 the American colonies were declared to be in a state of open rebellion by King George III.

In 1846 the US annexed New Mexico.

In 1902 in Hartford, CT., President Theodore Roosevelt became the first president to ever ride in an automobile.

In 1938 Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers appeared on the cover of Life magazine.

And in 1984 the last Volkswagen Rabbit rolled off the assembly line in New Stanton, PA.

In 1878 the American Bar Association was formed.

In 1912 Arthur R. Eldred became the first American boy to become an Eagle Scout.

In 1923 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, an ordinance was passed forbidding dancers from gazing into the eyes of their partner.

In 1959 Hawaii became the 50th state.

And in 1984 Victoria Roche, a reserve outfielder, became the first girl to ever compete in a Little League World Series game.

In 1858 Charles Darwin first publishes his theory of evolution through natural selection.

In 1866 President Andrew Johnson formally declares the American Civil War over.

In 1920 the first commercial radio station, 8MK (now WWJ), begins operations in Detroit, Michigan.

In 1938 Lou Gehrig hits his 23rd career grand slam – a record that still stands.

And in 1962 the NS Savannah, the world’s first nuclear-powered civilian ship, embarks on its maiden voyage.

On this day in 1812 the American frigate USS Constitution defeats the British frigate HMS Guerriere off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada earning the nickname “Old Ironsides”.

In 1909 the first automobile race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway took place.

In 1934 the first All-American Soap Box Derby was held in Dayton, Ohio.

In 1955, in the Northeast United States, severe flooding caused by Hurricane Diane claims 200 lives.

And in 1991 Black groups target Hasidic Jews on the streets of Crown Heights in New York, after 2 black kids were struck by a car driven by a Hasidic man.

The flood of “55 is a legend around these parts. Diane’s devastation is well known. Many buildings in Easton still have the high water lines marked. It destroyed a major bridge connecting NJ and PA, and flooded the entire downtown. Many of the shots in this video were shot locally, with the bridge shots starting around the 3:40 mark.

On this day in 1790 the capital city of the U.S. moved to Philadelphia from New York City.

In 1863 in Charleston, South Carolina, Union batteries and ships bombard Confederate-held Fort Sumter.

In 1950 the Hill 303 massacre of American POWs occurred. They were massacred by the North Korean Army.

In 1998 President Bill Clinton admits in taped testimony that he had an “improper physical relationship” with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. On the same day he admits before the nation that he “misled people” about the relationship.

And it’s Chas’ birthday too! 🙂

On this day in 1812 Detroit fell to Indian and British troops in the War of 1812.

In 1858 a telegraphed message from Britain’s Queen Victoria to President Buchanan was transmitted over the recently laid trans-Atlantic cable.

In 1861 President Lincoln prohibited the Union states from trading with the states of the Confederacy.

In 1954 Sports Illustrated was published for the first time.

And in 1960 Cyprus was granted independence by Britain.

This band’s first single was released today in 1966. It was this song.

And sadly this man died today in 1977 at the age of 42. And this was the first song I learned to play on the guitar.

In 1911 the product Crisco was introduced by Procter & Gamble Company.

In 1914 the Panama Canal was officially opened to commercial traffic as an American ship sailed from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean.

In 1935 Will Rogers and Wiley Post were killed in an airplane crash in near Point Barrow, AK.

In 1947 India became independent from Britain and was divided into the countries of India and Pakistan.

In 1961 East German workers began construction of the Berlin Wall.

And in 1997 the U.S. Justice Department decided not to prosecute FBI officials in connection with the deadly 1992 Ruby Ridge siege in Idaho.

And on this day in 1959 we had the founding and first official meeting of the American Football League.

In 1784 the United States Legislature met for the final time in Annapolis, MD.

In 1889 a patent for a coin-operated telephone was issued to William Gray.

In 1931 the first community hospital in the U.S. was dedicated in Elk City, OK.

In 1935 the first roller derby match was held at the Coliseum in Chicago, IL.

And in 1942 Walt Disney’s “Bambi” opened at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, NY.
