The weekend has arrived! And not just any weekend, it’s opening day of trout season here in PA. 🙂

On this day in 1638 the first permanent European settlement in Delaware was established. 

In 1867 the British Parliament passed the North America Act to create the Dominion of Canada. 

In 1943, rationing of meat, butter and cheese began during World War II. 

In 1951 Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage. They were executed in June 19, 1953.

And in 1973 the last U.S. troops left South Vietnam.

On this day in 1797 Nathaniel Briggs patented a washing machine.

In 1834 the U.S. Senate voted to censure President Jackson for the removal of federal deposits from the Bank of the United States. 

In 1854 the Crimean War began with Britain and France declaring war on Russia.  

In 1885 the Salvation Army was officially organized in the U.S. 

In 1933 the Nazis ordered a ban on all Jews in businesses, professions and schools.   

And in 1979 a major accident occurred at Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island nuclear power plant. A nuclear power reactor overheated and suffered a partial meltdown.

On this day in 1794 Congress authorized the creation of the U.S. Navy.   

In 1836, in Goliad, TX, about 350 Texan prisoners, including their commander James Fannin, were executed under orders from Gen. Antonio López de Santa Anna. An estimated 30 Texans escaped execution. 

In 1912 the first cherry blossom trees were planted in Washington, DC. The trees were a gift from Japan. 

In 1952 the U.S. Eighth Army reached the 38th parallel in Korea, the original dividing line between the two Koreas.  

And in 1958 the U.S. announced a plan to explore space near the moon.

In 1804 the Louisiana Purchase was divided into the District of Louisiana and the Territory of Orleans. 

In 1910 the U.S. Congress passed an amendment to the 1907 Immigration Act that barred criminals, paupers, anarchists and carriers of disease from settling in the U.S.

In 1938 Herman Goering warned all Jews to leave Austria.

In 1942 the Germans began sending Jews to Auschwitz in Poland.  

And in 1953 Dr. Jonas Salk announced a new vaccine that would prevent poliomyelitis.

On this day in 1609 Henry Hudson left on an exploration for Dutch East India Co. 

In 1634 Lord Baltimore founded the Catholic colony of Maryland. 

In 1776 the Continental Congress authorized a medal for General George Washington.   

In 1813 the frigate USS Essex flew the first U.S. flag in battle in the Pacific.  

In 1857 Frederick Laggenheim took the first photo of a solar eclipse. 

And in 1911, in New York City, 146 women were killed in fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York City. The owners of the company were indicted on manslaughter charges because some of the employees had been behind locked doors in the factory. The owners were later acquitted and in 1914 they were ordered to pay damages to each of the twenty-three families that had sued.

In 1790 Thomas Jefferson reported to President George Washington as the new secretary of state.

In 1851 Emperor Tu Duc ordered that Christian priests be put to death.

In 1905 sterilization legislation was passed in the State of Pennsylvania. The governor vetoed the measure.

And in 1928 President Calvin Coolidge gave the Congressional Medal of Honor to Charles Lindbergh for his first trans-Atlantic flight.

In 1868 the Jesse James Gang robbed a bank in Russelville, KY, of $14,000. 

And in 1922 the USS Langley was commissioned. It was the first aircraft carrier for the U.S. Navy.

In 1687 French explorer La Salle was murdered by his own men while searching for the mouth of the Mississippi River, in the Gulf of Mexico. 

In 1831 the first bank robbery in America was reported. The City Bank of New York City lost $245,000 in the robbery.

In 1903 the U.S. Senate ratified the Cuban treaty, gaining naval bases in Guantanamo and Bahia Honda.

And in another bad day on this date for a French explorer, in 1905 S. de Segonzac was taken prisoner by Moroccans.

In 1908 the state of Maryland barred Christian Scientists from practicing without medical diplomas.

And in 1918, Congress approved Daylight-Saving Time.
