In 1849 Walter Hunt patented the safety pin.

In 1912 the Titanic set sail from Southampton, England. 

In 1930 the first synthetic rubber was produced. 

And in 1963 129 people died when the nuclear-powered submarine USS Thresher failed to surface off Cape Cod, MA.

In 1865, at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, General Robert E. Lee surrendered his Confederate Army to Union General Ulysses S. Grant.

In 1869 the Hudson Bay Company ceded its territory to Canada. 

In 1945 in Bari, Italy, the Liberty exploded and killed 360 people. 

And in 1963 Winston Churchill became the first honorary U.S. citizen

In 1940 Booker T. Washington became the first black to be pictured on a U.S. postage stamp. 

In 1969 the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously struck down laws prohibiting private possession of obscene material.

And in 1970 John Wayne won his first and only Oscar for his role in “True Grit.” He had been in over 200 films.

In 1933 the first operation to remove a lung was performed at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, MO. 

In 1951 Americans Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were sentenced to death for committing espionage for the Soviet Union. 

And in 1986 a discotheque in Berlin was bombed by Libyan terrorists. The U.S. attacked Libya with warplanes in retaliation on April 15, 1986.

In 1946 Lt. General Masaharu Homma, the Japanese commander responsible for the Bataan Death March, was executed in the Philippines. 

And in 1968 Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “mountaintop” speech just 24 hours before he was assassinated.
