On this day in 1796 the first smallpox vaccination was given by Edward Jenner. 

In 1897 Guglielmo Marconi made the first communication by wireless telegraph. 

In 1940 the Netherlands surrendered to Nazi Germany.

In 1942 the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) was established by an act of the U.S. Congress. 

And in 1992 former Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev addressed members of the U.S. Congress, appealing to them to pass a bill to aid the people of the former Soviet Union.

This morning I went fishing. I saw this bird fly straight down and whack a beautiful butterfly I was trying to photo. Landed in the tree and ate ’em. 😯

I was only fast enough for one pic and then he was back to hunting. What is he?

On this day in 1821 the first practical printing press was patented in the U.S. by Samuel Rust. 

In 1864 the Battle of Resaca commenced as Union General Sherman fought towards Atlanta during the American Civil War.

In 1865 the last land engagement of the American Civil War was fought at the Battle of Palmito Ranch in far south Texas, more than a month after Gen. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, VA.

In 1867 Confederate President Jefferson Davis became a free man after spending two years in prison for his role in the American Civil War.  

And in 1927 “Black Friday” occurred in Germany.

In 1932 the infant body of Charles and Anna Lindbergh’s son was found just a few miles from the Lindbergh home near Hopewell, NJ.

And in 1943 the Axis forces in North Africa surrendered during World War II.

In 1872 Victoria Woodhull became the first woman nominated for the U.S. presidency. 

In 1908 the first Mother’s Day observance took place during a church service in Grafton, West Virginia.

In 1933 the Nazis staged massive public book burnings in Germany. 

And in 1969 the National and American Football Leagues announced their plans to merge for the 1970-71 season.

In 1926 Americans Richard Byrd and Floyd Bennett became the first men to fly an airplane over the North Pole. 

In 1960 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for sale an oral birth-control pill for the first time. 

And in 1996, in video testimony to a courtroom in Little Rock, AR, U.S. President Clinton insisted that he had nothing to do with a $300,000 loan in the criminal case against his former Whitewater partners.

In 1933 Gandhi began a hunger strike to protest British oppression in India. 

In 1956 Alfred E. Neuman appeared on the cover of “Mad Magazine” for the first time. 

And in 1973 militant American Indians who had held the South Dakota hamlet of Wounded Knee for 10 weeks surrendered.

On this day in 1429 the English siege of Orleans was broken by Joan of Arc. 

In 1800 the U.S. Congress divided the Northwest Territory into two parts. The western part became the Indiana Territory and the eastern section remained the Northwest Territory. 

In 1942, in the Battle of the Coral Sea, Japanese and American navies attacked each other with carrier planes. It was the first time in the history of naval warfare where two enemy fleets fought without seeing each other. 

In 1954 the United States and the United Kingdom rejected the Soviet Union’s bid to join NATO.

And in 1984 a $180 million out-of-court settlement was announced in the Agent Orange class-action suit brought by Vietnam veterans who claimed they had suffered injury from exposure to the defoliant while serving in the armed forces.

On this day in 1527 German troops began sacking Rome, bringing about the end of the Renaissance. 

In 1877 Chief Crazy Horse surrendered to U.S. troops in Nebraska. 

In 1889 the Universal Exposition opened in Paris, France, marking the dedication of the Eiffel Tower. Also at the exposition was the first automobile in Paris, the Mercedes-Benz. 

In 1941 Bob Hope gave his first USO show at California’s March Field. 

And in 1999 a parole board in New York voted to release Amy Fisher. She had been in jail for 7 years for shooting her lover’s wife, Mary Jo Buttafuoco, in the face.

In 1809 Mary Kies was awarded the first patent to go to a woman. It was for technique for weaving straw with silk and thread. 

In 1862 the Battle of Puebla took place. It is celebrated as Cinco de Mayo Day. 

In 1865 the Thirteenth Amendment was ratified, abolishing slavery in the U.S. 

And in 1987 the U.S. Congress opened the Iran-Contra hearings.

In 1933 the U.S. Mint was under the direction of a woman for the first time when Nellie Ross took the position. 

In 1952 the first airplane landed at the geographic North Pole. 

And in 1992 five days of rioting and looting ended in Los Angeles, CA. The riots killed 53 people.
