On this day in 1778 the United States gained official recognition from France as the two nations signed the Treaty of Amity and Commerce and the Treaty of Alliance in Paris.

In 1788 Massachusetts became the sixth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. 

In 1933 the 20th Amendment to the Constitution was declared in effect. The amendment moved the start of presidential, vice-presidential and congressional terms from March to January. 

In 1987 – President Ronald Reagan turned 76 years old this day and became the oldest U.S. President in history.

And in 1998 Washington National Airport was renamed for U.S. President Ronald Reagan.

In 1861 Samuel Goodale patented the moving picture peep show machine. 

In 1931 Maxine Dunlap became the first woman licensed as a glider pilot. 

And in 1999 Mike Tyson was sentenced to a year in jail for assaulting two people after a car accident on August 31, 1998.

In 1847 the first U.S. Telegraph Company was established in Maryland.

In 1932 the first Winter Olympics were held in the United States at Lake Placid, NY. 

In 1957 Smith-Corona Manufacturing Inc., of New York, began selling portable electric typewriters. The first machine weighed 19 pounds.

And in 1964 the Administrator of General Services announced that the 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution had been ratified. The amendment banned the poll tax.

On this day in 1690 the first paper money in America was issued by the Massachusetts colony.

In 1815 the world’s first commercial cheese factory was established in Switzerland. 

In 1900, in Frankfort, KY, gubernatorial candidate William Goebels died from an assassin’s bullet wounds. On August 18, 1900, Ex-Sec. of State Caleb Powers was found guilt of conspiracy to murder Gov. Goebels. 

In 1959 Buddy Holly (22), Ritchie Valens (17), the Big Bopper (28) and pilot Roger Peterson died in a plane crash in Iowa. 

And in 1969 Yasser Arafat was appointed leader of the PLO at the Palestinian National Congress in Cairo.

On this day in 1653 New Amsterdam, now known as New York City, was incorporated. 

In 1848 The Mexican War was ended with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The treaty turned over portions of land to the U.S., including Texas, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, California and parts of Colorado and Wyoming. The U.S. gave Mexico $15,000,000 and assumed responsibility of all claims against Mexico by American citizens. Texas had already entered the U.S. on December 29, 1845. 

In 1887  Groundhog Day began in Punxsutawney, PA. 

In 1897 the Pennsylvania state capitol in Harrisburg was destroyed by fire. The new statehouse was dedicated nine years later on the same site.

And in 1950 “What’s My Line” debuted on CBS television.

On this day in 1606 Guy Fawkes was executed after being convicted for his role in the “Gunpowder Plot” against the English Parliament and King James I. 

In 1865 the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives. The amendment abolished slavery in the United States. It’s also the day General Robert E. Lee was named general-in-chief of the Confederate armies.  

In 1876 all Native American Indians were ordered to move into reservations. 

And in 1982 Sandy Duncan gave her final performance as “Peter Pan” in Los Angeles, CA. She completed 956 performances without missing a show.

In 1850 Henry Clay introduced in the Senate a compromise bill on slavery that included the admission of California into the Union as a free state. 

In 1856 Britain’s highest military decoration, the Victoria Cross, was founded by Queen Victoria. 

In 1916 Paris was bombed by German zeppelins for the first time during WWI. 

And in 1940 the W. Atlee Burpee Seed Company displayed the first tetraploid flowers at the New York City Flower Show.
