On this day in 1789 a mutiny on the British ship Bounty took place when a rebel crew took the ship and set sail to Pitcairn Island. The mutineers left Captain W. Bligh and 18 sailors adrift.

In 1818 President James Monroe proclaimed naval disarmament on the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain.

In 1914 W.H. Carrier patented the design of his air conditioner.

In 1945 Benito Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci were executed by Italian partisans as they attempted to flee the country.

And in 1985 the largest sand castle in the world was completed near St. Petersburg, FL. It was four stories tall.

And in 1965 “Pampers” were patented by R.C. Duncan.

In 1898 the U.S. declared war on Spain. Spain had declared war on the U.S. the day before.

In 1928 a seeing eye dog was used for the first time.

And in 1967 Colorado Governor John Love signed the first law legalizing abortion in the U.S. 😦

In 1877 federal troops were ordered out of New Orleans. This was the end to the North’s post-Civil War rule in the South.

In 1953 Winston Churchill was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

And in 1990 the space shuttle Discovery blasted off from Cape Canaveral, FL. carrying the $1.5 billion Hubble Space Telescope.

On this day in 1789 President George Washington moved into Franklin House, New York. It was the first executive mansion.

In 1900 the word “hillbilly” was first used in print in an article in the “New York Journal.” It was spelled “Hill-Billie”.

In 1908 President Theodore Roosevelt signed an act creating the U.S. Army Reserve.

In 1964 Ken Johnson (Houston Astros) threw the first no-hitter for a loss. The game was lost 1-0 to the Cincinnati Reds due to two errors.

And in 2005 the first video was uploaded to YouTube.com.

In 1918 German fighter ace Manfred von Richthofen, “The Red Baron,” was shot down and killed during World War I.

And in 1972 Apollo 16 astronauts John Young and Charles Duke explored the surface of the moon.

In 1902 Scientists Marie and Pierre Curie isolated the radioactive element radium.

And in 1971 the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the use of busing to achieve racial desegregation in schools.

On this day in 1521 Martin Luther confronted the emperor Charles V in the Diet of Worms and refused to retract his views that led to his excommunication.  

In 1775 American revolutionaries Paul Revere, William Dawes, and Samuel Prescott rode though the towns of Massachusetts giving the warning that the Regulars were coming.

In 1847 U.S. troops defeated almost 17,000 Mexican soldiers commanded by Santa Anna at Cerro Gordo.

And in 1923 the original Yankee Stadium opened in the Bronx, NY. The Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 4-1. John Phillip Sousa’s band played the National Anthem.

And in 1969, in Los Angeles, Sirhan Sirhan was convicted of assassinating U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

Today is Jan Hammer’s birthday. Sadly, his most well known piece of work is the Miami Vice theme. 🙂 Since that doesn’t do justice to his talent, here’s something more fitting.
