Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks- Week 5

Another October and another government shutdown. But that won’t stop college football. So here is another pack of pigskin picks for your prognosticating pleasure. The military academies might have to cancel their games, supposedly because they have no money. Sorry, but the military is not affected by the shutdown. Therefore, in honor of those who have to serve under whatever Commander-in-Chief the electorate puts in charge, we feature all three of them this week.  This week is another pillow fight featuring the team with the longest losing streak. Maybe Southern Miss can win at home against another winless team, Florida International, after the embarrassment in Idaho. Oh, and since this another bye week for the University of Arizona, the upstate arch rival gets the tie breaker, since they are playing another WV favorite: Notre Dame. For some reason the game is at Arlington, Texas. Maybe the Irish didn’t want a team with a Devil for a mascot playing on “sacred ground”. Or else the Sun Devils didn’t want to try scoring while facing “Touchdown Jesus”. Editors: can you find the overused word in this post?

1. Air Force @ Navy —  I think you know the drill: Go Navy…!

2. Army @ Boston College – Let’s see if the Black Knights can overcome the political adversity.

3. #25 Maryland @ #8 Florida State – By request, here are the Seminoles making their first appearance in this  contest.

4. #3 Clemson @ Syracuse – A lot of Southern teams this week. At least this one is playing up North.

5. #6 Georgia @ Tennessee – In recognition of Anlir who started this contest on the old Whirled Views threads. Anyone know what he is up to now-a-days?

6. #24 Ole Miss @ Auburn – Alabama shut out Ole Miss last week. How will they fare against Auburn?

7. Missouri @ Vanderbilt – Sorry, Chas. But Tigers are popular as mascots.

8. Kentucky @ #13 South Carolina – Had to have an easy game to guess.

9. Florida International University @ Southern Miss – in the Pillow Fight of the Week*. Two winless teams. One with a 16 game losing streak. Maybe they really should use pillows.

10. Tie Breaker-#22 Arizona State vs. Notre Dame – Guess the winner and the score.  And tell us why you think the game is in Texas instead of one of the home fields.

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks- Week 4

Sorry, Kbells. Auburn isn’t playing this week. But something new this week: The Pillow Fight of the Week, in which two of the FBS (Div. 1-A) with the worst records go head to head the see who can actually win a game. This week we go to Idaho for a match with two winless teams: Temple at Idaho. And also, the team with the longest losing streak visits Idaho to play Boise State! That’s right, Southern Mississippi joins the fun in Idaho this week, bringing its 15 loss streak with it. I’ve also included three games involving Top 25 teams playing against each other, as well as both Army and Navy.  Lots of upset possibilities this week.

#12 South Carolina @ UCF — For Chas.

Navy @ Western Kentucky — For us Navy fans. Say it with me: Go Navy…!

Wake Forest @ #3 Clemson — Wow! A Tiger team in 3rd that isn’t Auburn or LSU. What’s this world coming to?

#6 LSU @ #9 Georgia — Speaking of Tigers, how about a Cat and Dog fight?

#14 Oklahoma @ #22 Notre Dame — The Sooners go North. Maybe they can win in South Bend as payback for last year when the Irish won in Norman.

Army vs. Louisiana Tech — For AJ. Say it with me folks – Go Navy…! 😉

#21 Ole Miss @ #1 Alabama — For Kim. Should be a good game to watch, except I’ll be watching something else (see below).

Southern Miss @ Boise State — For Mumsee. So the Broncos can play on Saturday.

Pillow Fight: Temple @ Idaho — All the losers in Idaho. Two will win.

Tie Breaker: Arizona @ #16 Washington Wildcats vs. Huskies. Another Cat and Dog fight. And on national TV!!! Thank you FOX for letting me see my Cats play!

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks- Week 3

Another week, more football!

Here are your choices, though actual competitive games seem slim pickin’s this time around. And once again, Boise State is playing on Friday night. Hey, don’t they know up there in the Northland that Saturday is the day for college football?  At any rate, since Arizona has a bye this week, I decided to go to AJ’s league for the tie breaker. That’s right, a battle for bragging rights in the Big Apple between Columbia of the Ivy League traveling to Fordham of the Patriot League. You’ll need to do your homework to figure out a final score, especially since this will be Columbia’s first game. Okay, have at it folks! Just get your entries in by 9:00PM EDT Friday night.

Boise State @ Fresno State – This is North versus South out West. Or should I say, the land of former Californians versus the Vegetable Capitol of the World. (At least that’s what I remember of the only time I’ve been to Fresno, miles and miles of farmland in a desert.)

Michigan State @ No. 22 Notre Dame – Spartans vs. Irish. One wonders how the ancient peoples of those names would have actually fared against each other. Or not.

Purdue @ No. 24 Wisconsin – B1G Ten. They forgot how to count, so they changed their logo. Now it looks like they can’t spell. And they haven’t figured out how to name their divisions. Legends and Leaders? Really? But they can play football, at least until they play the SEC in championship games.

Utah State @ USC – PAC 12. At least they could change their name when they added two more schools. Anyone else remember when it was the PAC-8?

Auburn @ No. 6 LSU – Perhaps a real matchup here. Both teams 3-0. Tigers vs. Tigers. Any other conferences have three teams with the same mascot? Any other conferences have half their teams in the Top 25? I didn’t think so.

Missouri @ Indiana – The third SEC Tigers face a (not-so) Big 10 foe. Or should I say “faux”. I can’t remember the last time Indiana had a great football program. Basketball, maybe. Too bad there aren’t hoops at either end of the field.

Tennessee @ No. 19 Florida – It’s not intentional that there are more SEC teams in this list. But what can I say?

Colorado State @ No. 1 Alabama – Figured everyone should get at least one game correct. And Kim is a ‘Bama fan.

No. 23 Arizona State @ No. 5 Stanford – This PAC-12 matchup features the only game with two teams from the Top 25. And Stanford’s first big test.

Tie Breaker: Columbia @ Fordham – Guess the winner and the score. Then if you get the closest and tie with another player, you win! The question is, who but AJ knows enough about these two 1-AA teams to even make an educated guess? (I think only AJ knows about these since he is from the area.)
