Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks “15-Week 8

Week 8. The season is more than half over. Four Texas teams this week. Only one ranked. A couple of he others are “rank” this year. An Alternate Universe is what college football this year. We have a military trifecta with all three of the major academies on the list. This week the Mountain West gets a non-Idaho game as a representative, since Boise State hosts the 1 win team from Wyoming. We need a challenge this week, no? (Ironic that this game has Broncos hosting Cowboys.)

Go at it folks. Pick your favorites or go according to team colors. I hope the logos make it, since I used a different method of putting them in this time. And get those picks in before 12:00 noon EDT Saturday.

  1. Kansas  State @ Texas – Can Texas make something of this season? Can Kansas State?

  2. Texas Tech @ #17 Oklahoma – Red Raiders cross the Red River. This game may be over “Sooner” than the Raiders wish.

  3. Fresno State @ Air Force –  Bulldogs go to the Rocky Mountains to meet the Flyboys. The Mountain West middle-of-the-pack teams.

  4. Tulane @ Navy – The Green Wave vs. the Midshipmen. Interesting scenario for a novel. A Naval Novel?

  5. Tennessee @ #8 Alabama – Crimson Tide hosts Volunteers. Is this a suicide mission for the Vols?

  6. #15 Texas A&M @ #24 Ole Miss – The Rebels need a win against the Aggies. A&M has a slim chance of going to the SEC Championship (if Alabama loses another game and A&M beats LSU.) Slim chance for sure.

  7. Washington State @ Arizona – Cougars vs. Wildcats. Cat fight in the desert. Should be a “Wild” one.

  8. #3 Utah @ USC – Well, talk about alternate universes! Utah #3? USC unranked?

  9. Power-Pillow Fight: Georgia Southern @ Appalachian State – Okay, so these two teams are not losers. They are the best teams in the worst conference. Thus the added adjective.

  10. Tie Breaker – Pick Winner and Final Score: Army @ Rice – The Knights have a new logo. Will it help them win? I doubt the Owls give a hoot about it.

Note from AJ: The logos keep disappearing. They’re there when I copy, but not when I paste. Sorry. 😦

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks “15-Week 7

Lucky 7, or some say. Maybe week 7 of Pickled Pigskin Picks will be lucky for someone not named Tychicus, IBNO or kbells. I don’t believe in luck. If you do, pick the games based on something other than the logical choice. Just pick 10 winners and the score of the Tie Breaker, which this week is a Big 12 matchup, chosen by last week’s winner Tychicus. And get those entries in by Friday 9:00 PM EDT when Boise State takes on Utah State. Oh, and the other Idaho school is in the Pillow fight against Troy of Alabama, both 1 and 4 on the season.

  1. Boise State @ Utah State

  2. #17 Iowa @ #20 Northwestern

  3. Purdue @ Wisconsin

  4. #10 Alabama @ #9 Texas A&M

  5. Vanderbilt @ South Carolina

  6. USC @ #14 Notre Dame

  7. Arizona @ Colorado

  8. Boston College @ #5 Clemson

  9. Pillow Fight: Idaho @ Troy

  10. Tie Breaker: Guess winner and final score – West Virginia @ #2 Baylor

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks “15-Week 6

It’s time once again for that foray into futility for some, or that venture into victory for others. Peter’s Pickled Pigskin Picks is back. Some big games are on tap, and some that seem like they’ll be easy to pick. It’s the Red River Rivalry game weekend. Remember when it mattered? It still does along the Texas-Oklahoma border. There is also the traditional Navy vs. Notre Dame rivalry. This year should prove interesting since Navy is undefeated, but has to go to South Bend to play a team that got embarrassed last week down South. The Pillow Fight is here, along with a contest from the SEC East (even though the game is on the Mid West) for the tie breaker. Have at it!

  1. #10 Oklahoma @ Texas – Remember when this was a game between two great teams?

  1. Arkansas @ #8 Alabama – Alabama needs it’s ‘A’ game if it wants to be considered a champion again.

  1. #25 Boise State @ Colorado State – Broncos and Rams. I remember when CSU was an also ran in the old Western Athletic Conference. Now it is an also ran in another conference.

  1. Duke @  Army – Can Army make something of this season?

    5.   Navy @ #15 Notre Dame – See above.

  1. #13 Northwestern @ #18 Michigan – Remember when Northwestern was the floor mat of the Big 10? Times have changed.

  1. Oregon State @ Arizona – Arizona needs this one after two humiliating losses to California teams.

  1. #23 Cal @  #5 Utah – I remember when Utah was a door mat in the old WAC with CSU. Times have changed.

  1. Pillow Fight: UConn (2-3) @ Central Florida (0-5) – Huskies in Florida. Not what I think of when I think of warm climates.

     10. Tie Breaker (pick winner and score): #11 Florida @  Mizzou – Tigers at home against a team that used to be great. I wonder if Mizzou has Gatorade on their sidelines?

Remember: Get those picks in before noon on Saturday, as that is when the action begins!

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks “15 Week-5

Tychicus and Inbutnotof. Two names to remember when voting for the Pickled Pigskin Picks Hall of Fame. These are the only two winners in four weeks, with two each. AJ and Mumsee have been up there lately, but just haven’t gotten close enough in the tie breaker scores. You read that correctly. Mumsee. The female farm wife Bronco fan from a remote part Idaho. Sounds like a reality show teaser, doesn’t it?

At any rate, here are the picks of the week. Idaho is represented twice this week. Boise State hosts Hawaii and Idaho travels almost as far as the Rainbows to play Arkansas State in the Pillow Fight of the Week (according to ESPN’s Bottom Ten.) And to make everyone happy, most of the major conferences have at least two teams on the list. The big games are in the Big 12 and SEC this time around. And of course, the tie breaker is a Big 12 matchup, which Tychicus, last week’s winner, got to choose.

  1. South Carolina @ Mizzou

  2. Army @ Penn State

  3. Air Force @ Navy

  4. #23 West Virginia @ #15 Oklahoma

  5. #13 Alabama @ #8 Georgia

  6. Iowa @ #19 Wisconsin

  7. Hawai’i @ Boise State

  8. Arizona @ #18 Stanford

  9. Pillow Fight: Idaho (1-3) @ Arkansas State (1-3 )

10. Tie Breaker – Guess Winner and final score: Texas Tech @ #5 Baylor

NOTE:  The first game isn’t until Saturday noon eastern, but get your guesses in by Friday night anyway.

P.S. What do you all think of the school logos? Should I continue including them? Yea or nay? (I guess AJ has the final say since it is his blog.) Oh, I know. Maybe I’ll just post the logos, then I’ll be about the only one who knows which teams are playing and the rest of you will be guessing blindly. But then, one of the women might win based on the best looking logos. Oh, well. Leave well-enough alone.

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks “15- Week 4

Put on your prognosticating shoes, folks. Ten more contests on the gridiron to guess the winner. I have included a Pillow Fight, between two teams that can’t seem to win very much. That game also gives Tychicus an extra Big 12 game. And don’t forget to predict the score of the Tie Breaker Game, which is a tough one this week. IBNO chose the Middle Tennessee at Illinois game, since he was last week’s winner. What’s so hard about it? Well, even though MidTen is in a minor conference (C-USA) and Illinois is one of the bottom feeders in the B1G 10, who can say who will win?

So there you are, fellow Wanderers. Have at it.

  1. Boise State @ Virginia (Friday 7:00 EDT) – Mumsee’s Broncos visit the East Coast.

  2. #24 Oklahoma State @ Texas – The other Oklahoma school crosses the Red River.

  3. #3 TCU @ Texas Tech – Two tough Texas teams tangle together.

  4. Central Florida @ South Carolina – Gamecocks get a breather. Maybe.

  5. Navy @ Connecticut – Midshipmen go to the state where a lot of their ships are made.

  6. #9 UCLA @ # 16 Arizona – This one could decide the PAC-12 South.

  7. #25 Mizzou @ Kentucky – Can the Tigers continue to surprise the SEC?

  8. Mississippi State @ (unranked???) Auburn – Hmm. I wonder if Miss. St. can win at Auburn.

  9. (Pillow Fight) Kansas (0-2) @ Rutgers (1-2) – Jayhawks and Knights. Yawn.

10. Tie Breaker: Middle Tennessee @ Illinois (Guess the winner and the score.) – Some major schools need minor opponents in order to feel like they are having a good season.

Remember: pick winners of all games; guess the final score of the tie breaker, trying not to duplicate someone else’s guess; enter by 7:00pm EDT Friday.

Disclaimer: One entry per person. Prizes include boasting rights and the right to pick the next tie breaker game. Nothing else. Nada. Aught. Diddly. Zippo. Zilch. Zero. No new cars or cash prizes, regardless of the desire or need of the winner.

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks “15- Week 3

Here they are. Ten games. Twenty teams. One winner of all the blog glory (I know, a little exaggerated there). Four games have Top 25 teams going at each other. Two others feature Top 25 teams playing unranked opponent. But I gotta please the audience. Chas likes South Carolina, so they are here again, even though they have a tough contest on the road against #7 Georgia. IBNO chose the tie breaker, which has #9 Florida State traveling to Yankee land: Boston College. Have at it, folks. Let’s see if we can do better than last week, in which we averaged 5.6 correct, after the previous week of 7.3 (8, if we leave one score of 0 out). But then, the first week had a lot of “gimmie” games.

1 Idaho State @ Boise State

  Wake Forest @ Army

East Carolina @  Navy

#15 Ole Miss @  #2 Alabama

 5  South Carolina @  #7 Georgia

 6  #18 Auburn @  #13 LSU

#14 Georgia Tech @  #8 Notre Dame

Virginia Tech @  Purdue

#19 BYU @  #10 UCLA

10 Tie Breaker: #9 Florida State @ Boston College

Remember: pick winners of all games; guess the final score of the tie breaker, trying not to duplicate someone else’s guess; enter by 7:00pm EDT Friday. One entry per person. Prizes include boasting rights and the right to pick the next tie breaker game. Nothing else. Nada. Aught. Diddly. Zippo. Zilch. Zero.

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks “15- Week 2

Another week, another weekend of college football. Last week, four of us got nine out of ten games correct. It was a cake walk with all the top teams playing pushovers. Not this week. There is a possible preview of the final championship game with #7 Oregon visiting #5 Michigan State. And BYU hosts Boise State, after the now-famous Hail Mary pass by a substitute quarterback got BYU the win over Nebraska, at Lincoln! Have fun with this one, folks. Just make your picks by game-time Saturday, which is 10:30 AM EDT, when South Florida visits Florida State.

Remember the rules: Pick the winners of all ten games, and the final score of the tie breaker, which this week was chosen by Tychicus, who was the winner last week.

  1 South Florida @ #11 Florida State

  2 Army @ Connecticut

  3 Iowa @ Iowa State

  4 #19 Oklahoma @ # 23 Tennessee

  5 Kentucky @ South Carolina

  6 #7 Oregon @ # 5 Michigan State

7  San Jose State @  Air Force

  8 #20 Boise State @ BYU

  9 #22 Arizona @ Nevada

10 Tie Breaker:  Kansas State @  UT- San Antonio

Pick winner and final score.

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks-Week 15

Okay, some of you asked for it, here it is. Since Tychicus suggested a 7 game format this time, I figured, why not? I could add the “Pillow Fight of the Year”, according to Ryan McGee of ESPN.com, between two perennially bad teams. But I wouldn’t want this season of Joy and Goodwill to be spoiled. So, here are the 7 8 chosen games, all a championship of some sort. The rankings are the Playoff Committee rankings.

1.  #7 Arizona  vs.   #2 Oregon– This could be Arizona’s first ever solo PAC-12 championship. And Oregon has only 1 loss – to Arizona.

2. Oklahoma State vs. #20 Oklahoma – The Sooner State bragging rights are on the line, but not much else except maybe a better bowl game.

3. #1 Alabama vs. #16 Missouri – SEC Championship. For the 2nd year of its 2 years in the conference, Mizzou has beaten the odds and made it this far. Will they go all the way? Stay tuned.

4. #4 Florida State vs. #11 Georgia Tech – ACC Championship. Personally, I don’t think FSU deserves the #4 ranking, since all too often they have had to win it in the last second to much lesser competition.

5. #13 Wisconsin vs.  #5 Ohio State – The B1G Championship. This could put OSU into the playoff picture, especially if one of the top 4 loses.

6. Fresno State vs. #22 Boise State – The Mountain West Championship. Yeah, I know, not much riding on this one except a 2nd rate bowl invitation. Too bad Boise can’t get into a more respectable conference.

7. #9 Kansas State vs. #6 Baylor – The de-facto Big 12 “Championship”. One of these teams could be in the playoffs as well. This is our tie breaker. Guess the winner and the score.

There you have it.

And then Peter asks:

“Should we add Army vs Navy and wait a week for our winner?

I wish that game were this weekend. Go Navy!”

To which AJ replies “Let’s do it. And go Black Knights!”

8. army 2  vs.  navy

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks- Week 14

Here are the games for the (Mostly) Rivalry Week:

 1. Arkansas @ #20 Missouri – This hasn’t yet become a rivalry, since Mizzou’s old Big 8/12 rivalry was Kansas.

2. Arizona State @ Arizona – Not only is this a big rivalry, but the winner just might play in the PAC-12 Championship.

3. Virginia @ Virginia Tech – State pride and avoiding a losing season are on the line for both of these 5-6 teams.

4. Michigan @ #6 Ohio State – This use to be an almost national championship. Whatever happened to Michigan?

5. #18 Georgia Tech @ #10 Georgia – Wasps and Dawgs. Stingers and fangs. One “Peach” of a game, no?

6. #7 Baylor vs. Texas Tech – Remember when the “Big Rivalry” game in the Lone Star State was Longhorns vs. Aggies? What happened to Texas?

7. #4 Mississippi State @ Ole Miss – Can Ole Miss salvage something from the last two weeks of defeat? Either way, this is a can’t “Miss” game.

8. Florida @ #3 Florida State – Another game that used to be important. I guess Florida could make the playoff selection interesting.

9. # 14 Auburn @ #1 Alabama – The Iron Bowl. ’Nuff said.

10. Tie Breaker: South Carolina @ #22 Clemson – Chas doesn’t like Tigers. I see why, since South Carolina has the potential to play 4 different Tigers in a season, what with 3 in the SEC and Clemson on the schedule. At any rate, don’t be a turkey, guess winner and the score.

The first game is Friday @ 2:30pm EST, so get those guesses in before that left-over turkey sandwich (mine will have mayonnaise and mustard) and that afternoon nap.

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks- Week 13

13. Some consider it unlucky. But I don’t believe in luck, good or bad. So, you can try your luck at guessing the winner of these ten eleven games, or test your skill, whichever you prefer.

Just get your guesses in by Saturday @ high noon! (That’s 12 EST, the beginning of the 13th hour of the day.)

Editors Note – As you can see below, I’ve added an 11th game this week because it’s a special occasion in the college football world. Saturday at Yankee Stadium, the longest running rivalry in college football will play their 150th game.

Here are your games (no apologies for the extended commentary):

 1. #25 Minnesota @ #23 Nebraska – Can the Cornhuskers overcome their problems against the Gophers? At least they are at home in Lincoln.

2. Fordham @ Army – The Black Knights are 3-7 and have lost to some good teams, and some bad ones. They’ve beaten some bad teams. But Fordham is 10-1 this season. You do the math.

3. Boston College @ #3 Florida State – The Seminoles almost lost to an unranked team on the road last week. The Eagles are a sacred bird to Native Americans. Think the Seminoles will let their Sacred Bird fly away with a win? I doubt it. They wouldn’t want the embarrassment at home.

4. #24 Louisville @ Notre Dame – The Fighting Irish have become the Fading Irish. Crushed in Arizona, then defeated by Northwestern at home! The Cardinals (a bird, not a religious leader) don’t stand a chance.

5. #15 Arizona @ #17 Utah – The Wildcats still have an outside chance at getting their first ever PAC-12 Championship and a trip to the Rose Bowl. Watch out, Utes!

6. #19 USC @ #9 UCLA – These two, and Arizona State, are the other PAC-12 South teams vying for the championship game. Too bad they all can’t lose. (Yes, I want Arizona to go for the Roses. We Wildcat fans have been waiting for 35 years.)

7. #8 Ole Miss @ Arkansas – Too bad the Rebels had to play Auburn. But they still have Mississippi State on the schedule. Perhaps their dream season has ended. The Razorbacks better tread carefully.

8. #20 Missouri @ Tennessee – The Tigers are in the lead in the SEC East. Unless they blow it against the Vols and the Razorbacks, they’ll play in the SEC Championship for the second time. So they miss the Big 12? No.

9. Boise State @ Wyoming – Broncos vs. Cowboys. It looks like the horses could win this rodeo.

10. South Alabama @ South Carolina – 6-4 Jaguars visiting 5-5 Gamecocks. Sun Belt vs. SEC. I think a .500 SEC team that plays a harder schedule shouldn’t have to worry about a .600 team from a less challenging conference (They have not faced any ranked team other than Mississippi State). But this is college football. Remember, it’s Chas’ team hosting this one.

11. Editors choice- Lafayette vs. Lehigh – Playing game number 150 at a neutral field, Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Guess the winner and final score.

As an added bonus this week I’ve decided to give the people what they want, a shiny red sports car! (picture). If you guess the winner and final score of the Lafayette-Lehigh game exactly, you’ll win this….. A picture of a shiny red sports car. I’d love to buy you a real one, but this is kind of a low no budget operation we have running here. 🙂

I’ll even autograph it if you like. 🙂
