In 1918 regular airmail service between New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC, began under the direction of the Post Office Department, which later became the U.S. Postal Service. 

In 1942 gasoline rationing began in the U.S. The limit was 3 gallons a week for nonessential vehicles. 

In 1948 Israel was attacked by Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon only hours after declaring its independence. 

And in 1970 President Nixon appointed America’s first two female generals.

In 1940 the Netherlands surrendered to Nazi Germany.

In 1942 the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) was established by an act of the U.S. Congress. 

And in 1992 former Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev addressed members of the U.S. Congress, appealing to them to pass a bill to aid the people of the former Soviet Union.

This morning I went fishing. I saw this bird fly straight down and whack a beautiful butterfly I was trying to photo. Landed in the tree and ate ’em. 😯

I was only fast enough for one pic and then he was back to hunting. What is he?

And I caught one fish, this one.

On this day in 1821 the first practical printing press was patented in the U.S. by Samuel Rust. 

In 1864 the Battle of Resaca commenced as Union General Sherman fought towards Atlanta during the American Civil War.

In 1865 the last land engagement of the American Civil War was fought at the Battle of Palmito Ranch in far south Texas, more than a month after Gen. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, VA.

In 1867 Confederate President Jefferson Davis became a free man after spending two years in prison for his role in the American Civil War.  

And in 1927 “Black Friday” occurred in Germany.

On this day in 1429 the English siege of Orleans was broken by Joan of Arc. 

In 1800 the U.S. Congress divided the Northwest Territory into two parts. The western part became the Indiana Territory and the eastern section remained the Northwest Territory. 

In 1942, in the Battle of the Coral Sea, Japanese and American navies attacked each other with carrier planes. It was the first time in the history of naval warfare where two enemy fleets fought without seeing each other. 

In 1954 the United States and the United Kingdom rejected the Soviet Union’s bid to join NATO.

And in 1984 a $180 million out-of-court settlement was announced in the Agent Orange class-action suit brought by Vietnam veterans who claimed they had suffered injury from exposure to the defoliant while serving in the armed forces.

In 1877 Chief Crazy Horse surrendered to U.S. troops in Nebraska. 

In 1889 the Universal Exposition opened in Paris, France, marking the dedication of the Eiffel Tower. Also at the exposition was the first automobile in Paris, the Mercedes-Benz. 

In 1941 Bob Hope gave his first USO show at California’s March Field. 

And in 1999 a parole board in New York voted to release Amy Fisher. She had been in jail for 7 years for shooting her lover’s wife, Mary Jo Buttafuoco, in the face.
