Janice – I just saw your question to me from last night, asking how I am doing.
Quite frankly, I am overwhelmed. I have hesitated to say anything here, because I know that you are going through an overwhelming season yourself.
Knowing I am going to move, but not when, is difficult. And there is SO MUCH that needs to be dealt with, and at times I feel like I just don’t know what I am doing. God will then give me a little nudge, and I’ll do the next thing. As many “next things” that I have done over the past year or so, it seems there is still “too much” to deal with.
Something I try to do, which I think the Lord put into my mind a while back, is to mentally put on blinders and only focus on the “next thing” I am in the midst of.
One issue I’d had was how to get rid of the old furniture (dining table set and bedroom set from my parents – both sets too large for where I am going), and how to replace them. Nightingale had once suggested thrift store shopping for furniture, but she is insanely busy with work and nursing school, so I knew that would not work out.
That matter was weighing on my heart, and one day God gave me an idea. I reached out to the woman who will be my realtor eventually, and has helped with advice in the past, and she gave me the name of a man who has a part-time “junk removal” business. What I liked about him is that he donates or sells what is still usable rather than tossing everything in the town landfill, which is the kind of service I wanted.
First, though, I spent some time carefully looking at furniture on Wayfair, which just happened to be having an early Labor Day sale. After careful searching, I was thrilled to eventually find exactly what I would have wanted for my new bed frame and dining table and chairs. Not only that, but with the prices being quite reasonable, I decided to replace my living room end tables which were old and scratched up some, and also the lamps, which were also old. The beautiful end tables I bought look like they would be very expensive, but were among the least expensive on the site.
So that was a blessing! (And a good use of some of the remaining life insurance money. Hubby would have approved.)
Then on Monday, I discovered water leaking through the rock wall of my basement. At first I panicked and had no idea what to do or who to call. But then I realized that I should call the water company. (Duh!) They sent someone out a little while later with some kind of instrument to find the pipe, which is beneath my driveway, and turn off the water. What amazed me is that they brought a tank of water out and back-fed it into the house’s system through the outside spigot, so I have had water. They also brought a case of bottled water for drinking.
Today the work was done on digging up the driveway and repairing the pipe, then refilling the trench, and tamping it down with something that sounded like a jackhammer. The water is still off, but someone else will be coming within a few days to deal with that.
I wish I could say that that is all, but it isn’t, and I am too tired to get into the rest. Maybe I’ll try to write about that some other time.
Kizzie, what you wrote is much like how I cope, one God nudge at a time, trying not to panic before he gives an answer. I will pray for you as I pray for myself on our overwhelming situations
Kizzie, like you, I do not want to call on my adult offspring who has so much on his plate. I have often, in many ways, felt like a widow in that Art has to be away at the office as he is today. All the responsibilities for the home falls on me.
Janice – I understand. It is hard having all of that responsibility on one’s shoulders. In my case, I am so glad that I will eventually move to the senior living place.
This house is literally falling apart. It needs a new roof, the porches have to be torn down and rebuilt anew (very expensive, even more than the roof), the electricity is out in my bathroom and most of the living room, the upstairs bathroom is unusable, and repairing it would include ripping out my kitchen ceiling down here due to a leak. The carpets are old and in bad shape, as are the kitchen cabinets and counters.
There is no way that I could afford to have all of that done. And as time goes on, more would need to be taken care of.
I do wonder if I will even be able to sell this house. When the time comes, I will share my concern with the realtor who probably knows what options I may have, and may even be able to sell it for a low price to someone wanting to gut a house and renovate it.
Would you and Art ever consider selling the house and moving to an apartment?
Thanks for the hug, Kuzzie. I am giving a strong hug back.
I had wanted to renovate here and make part a flat for us and the other part rental. I think it could have been done since there are duplexes down the street from us. I wanted to live in a senior living place during renovation. Art was not interested in the idea.
I am not sure what we will eventually do. An apartment sounds lovely to me. I would like to live closer to our son. I like the idea of parents either sharing a home with the younger set or living in the same neighborhood. Not sure if that will ever be feasible for us.
I have known several older ladies who had small apartments and I thought it was great.
🙂 Time with grown children and their families is priceless.

Thank you so much, Kizzie. I truly appreciate your prayer covering. We have much in common. Now I have a water leak on a holiday weekend. 😦
God got my attention with the bright sunshine during the rain. Made me think that He can provide in unusual and unexpected ways.
