  3. Is it propaganda or is it news? Depends who you talk to and their point of view. Sure, the Trump admin is unhappy with some of the news — so perhaps they want their version of the news ie propaganda? Maybe they should have planned this war of choice better so the news is better?

I don’t think any news source denies Iran is getting pummelled. At the same time, it’s also quite obvious that Iran is still capable of retaliating and demonstrating resolve. They also still have a range of options that they are using.

They have effectively closed the Straits. They are hitting infrastructure in the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. They are hitting Israel. The iron dome appears quite weak. This isn’t propaganda, this is fact and therefore news.

Meanwhile Trump has asked the UK, France and other nations to escort tankers through the straits. Did the Trump admin not see this as a problem before they attacked Iran? Where was the planning to cope with this threat? For over 40 years, the Pentagon has war gamed an attack on Iran and the straits was always an issue. Its probably why the US hasn’t attacked before, so why didn’t the Trump admin understand this?

Reminds me — I thought rumours that the US was moving missile interceptors from South Korea to the Persian Gulf were just rumours — why would the US need to do this less than a week into a war? I thought they would have planned the material needed and made sure the supply chain was in motion before any attack. However, I’m wrong, they are dismantling systems in South Korea and bringing them to the Gulf — the level of incompetence in planning is incredible here.

  4. From what I’ve read, the attack on the Jewish synagogue appears to stem from personal trauma rather than any terrorist organisation. A man’s family was killed by the Israeli bombing in Lebanon and this was the man’s response. The Lebanese embassy is obviously trying to distant itself from the attack. Nothing surprising here. And I’m not sure why anyone is mentioning Hezbollah in that context.

My impression of Iranian supported groups in the Middle East was they were regionally focused — they attacked targets in the middle east, Israeli, American or Arab, and not targets outside the middle east.

Finally, why would anyone renounce American citizenship? What’s the benefit? I realise American citizens have to file taxes even when they live abroad and don’t earn income in the US but other than that what’s the point? Most Europeans living in Canada don’t renounce citizenship nor do Canadians living abroad, there’s just no point. Is the tax benefit the only issue for Americans?

  5. How is the US taking care of things? The Trump admin and Israel launched a war of choice without adequate planning or foresight. And the most predictable thing happened — oil prices went up and now the international economy faces serious problems. The US/Israel broke it and should fix it but due to bad planning are now asking countries whose economies are at the most risk (UK, France, South Korea, Japan, etc) to bail the US out.

The failure to plan ahead and have an attainable goal in which to declare victory has meant that it is in Iran’s interest to drag this out. They are damaging the Gulf states and weakening the autocrats (Bahrain, with its Sunni monarch but Shii people, is quite vulnerable). Israeli/US carpet bombing has the entirely predictable of rallying the people around the regime or at the very least not wanting to help the US by overthrowing the ayatollahs. I struggle to find any benefit to the US (or the west in general). The Iranian economy was already in shambles so they have nothing to lose but now they can create economic chaos elsewhere — thus forcing the rest of the world to care about their economic needs.

Israel benefits as Iran’s regional power may decline plus Israel is turning south Lebanon into another Gaza while the world is distracted. The big winner in this is Russia — higher gas prices will save their economy and other countries are willing to ignore the US/EU led boycott. India for example is not only buying Russian oil, it’s making a deal with Iran for safe passage of its tankers. South Korea and Japan have other interests or the idea of negotiating with Iran would have its appeal for them too. Some “experts” say China will benefit as well as Russia but I’m not too sure — they need cheap oil and they need customers for their consumer goods — economic stability is important for them. If the US is bogged down for tool long, the Chinese may win out simply because the conflict will hurt them less.

I suppose Alberta should thank the US for raising the price of oil but the rest of us will face increased inflation. Perhaps the Cdn dollar (which usually follows oil prices) will go up enough so I can afford a trip to Europe. Really I’m confused as to why Canada should be grateful for any of this…..Our oil by the way comes mostly from ourselves and then the US, Venezuela/Colombia and Nigeria. Very little comes from the middle east (some very light crude from Saudi Arabia). We have very little stake in the middle east other than oil prices in general.

“BREAKING: DOJ has charged a Virginia man with illegally selling the gun used by ODU terrorist Mohamed Jalloh. According to the federal complaint, Kenya Chapman sold a .22 caliber Glock 44 pistol to Jalloh for $100 this week. He admitted he first stole it from a vehicle in Newport News, VA a year ago.

Additionally, DOJ says Chapman was the subject of an ATF investigation in 2021 after he straw purchased three firearms that were later recovered from crime scenes, including a homicide. Chapman admitted to the illegal straw purchases (when you buy a gun and falsely claim its for yourself when you intend to sell it or give it to someone else), but the Biden DOJ declined to prosecute him. Instead, Chapman was given a warning, and he signed an apology letter.

According to the federal complaint, Jalloh, who was convicted of providing support to ISIS and had been released from prison early after just 7 years, was visited at his Virginia home by his US probation officer every 6 months.

The probation officer’s last visit to Jalloh’s home in Sterling, VA, was November 17th, 2025.

Additionally, according to the federal complaint, the evening before Jalloh carried out the terrorist attack at ODU, his phone was tracked in the vicinity of the Islamic Center of Hampton, VA.”

  8. “For the record.

Critics who argue that President Trump misjudged Iran or acted impulsively fail to grasp the strategic coherence underpinning recent U.S. operations. Many of these same commentators, until hours ago, could not have pointed to Kharg Island on a map, yet it is the core through which the Iranian regime’s economy breathes. Nearly 90% of Tehran’s crude exports run through Kharg, a terminal capable of handling roughly seven million barrels a day. Disrupting or seizing control of this node strikes at the regime’s primary revenue artery without requiring a ground war or full-scale confrontation.

The precision of the U.S. campaign underscores this logic. American strikes have degraded Iran’s military infrastructure while sparing oil export sites, signalling a strategy not of regime change but of coercive stabilization. The objective is clear: reopen the Strait of Hormuz, restore safe Gulf exports, and pressure Iran toward internal reform rather than external collapse. Securing transit routes and establishing U.S.-supervised flows from Iranian facilities like Kharg would not only stabilize global supply but also weaken China’s energy leverage across Eurasia.

In that sense, what critics call “reckless escalation” may instead be a calculated rebalancing of power using economic geography, not ideology, as the primary instrument of statecraft. The question is not whether Washington has a plan, but whether its detractors have the strategic literacy to recognize one.”

  9. Just to highlight a few reasons which are not the only reasons . Obama and Biden have been spineless even pandering and financing Iran. They tried to kill our President and have murdered thousands of their countrymen and women. Have you seen the survivors celebrating in the streets?

    • Attacks on Gulf Allies: Iran has targeted Gulf Arab nations that house U.S. military personnel, including threatening to attack sites in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), claiming they were used in U.S. attacks on Iran.
    • Proxy Warfare: Beyond direct actions, Iran utilizes regional proxies to launch attacks on U.S. bases in Syria and Iraq.
    • Threats to U.S. Soil: Security experts have warned of potential cyberattacks and threats from Iranian operatives within the United States, including plots to assassinate U.S. officials.
    • Assassination Plots: In January 2024, an attack by Kataib Hezbollah killed three U.S. soldiers in Jordan. In November 2024, a report highlighted over 180 attacks by Iran-backed groups on U.S. forces in the Middle East

And believe you me if they attack on our homeland…9/11 style again… Canada isn’t immune to these terrorists! And Biden has let in through our borders thousands! People need to wake up and don’t get me started on the anti Israel movement happening.

“CNN support for Iran reaches new heights.

CNN officials were caught partying with Iranian officials in London.

This could help explain why CNN was the only outlet allowed by Tehran to broadcast from inside Iran.

CNN gave a softball interview to an Iranian government official complicit in the deaths of over 35,000 Iranians.

They also gave Iranian state media four uninterrupted minutes to broadcast their propaganda on CNN’s American airwaves.

Earlier this week, CNN was busy romanticizing Islamic terrorism with a headline about the NYC IED bombers that sympathized with the attackers and implied that police arresting them were the real problem.”

  12. An operation against Kharg or the Iranian coastline would not be necessary if the US/Israel attack had not occurred. The X post justifies future US behaviour on the basis of an action that has yet to be justified. We still don’t know what was the original goal.

And I’m not too sure the Iranians care at this point if the oil terminal is bombed — they’ve said they want the price to go to 200 a barrel, a US bombing of Kharq will do that. Their own economy is a mess, this way the world’s economy is like theirs…..

Iranian oil has been subjected to sanctions prior to the US/Israeli attack — not sure if attacking Kharq changes anything. Closing the Strait prevents Saudi, Kuwaiti etc oil from being exported, not Iranian oil.

NJ — Iran has attacked the Gulf States because they are hosting US forces that attacked Iran. In the context of self defence that makes sense. If the US had not attacked, Iran would not have retaliated. Obviously the retaliation can’t justify the initial attack.

Other than the warning of possible plots, Iran’s attacks and use of proxies has been confined to the middle east. These are regional power conflicts between Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. Other than its interest in energy supply, the US doesn’t have an existential interest in this regional conflict — other than being used by Israel and Saudi Arabia.

The survivors — surviving the regime or the carpet bombing? Right now, nobody is in the streets especially after Israel bombed the oil storage and there’s black chemical smoke everywhere. “Gulf war syndrome” will be making a return to Tehran. And that’s the problem — the initial euphoria of bombing their oppressors is gone and now its a realisation that US/Israel is bombing the people too.

I do know that I pray for our brother and sister Christians all over the world who are being persecuted and for those living underground. I pray those countries will be turned around (however) to allow people to live according to their own consciences.

Oh, and I know what went on in MN and all the whistle blowers who were threatened. I know what party was complicit in allowing it and still is to a large degree. I know which party made our schools (once first in the nation) to now have students leaving not being reading or math literate. Antifa Denial: How a Violent Anti-Free Speech Group Became a Non-Entity in American Politics

“Below is my column on the rise of Antifa deniers in Washington.

Once embraced and even marketed on the left, Antifa has become the group that must not be named as political violence rises across the country. It does not matter that radicals identify as Antifa, coordinate protests, carry Antifa flags, wear signature clothing, and espouse the same ideas from the “Antifa handbook.” There have even been people elected as Antifa representatives. Yet, the current spin is to pretend that they do not exist as a single organization to deflect the debate over violence on the left. Even with the past and current FBI directors saying that they exist as a group, politicians are mocking those who object to Antifa, even journalists and others targeted by its members.”

  17. A few keyboard warriors on X are hardly the means to judge military effectiveness. The first step to judge military effectiveness is to understand the objective and to assess whether the objective has been meant. The problem of course is we don’t have an objective…..

Strangely, Trump has said he turned down negotiations with Iran and wants to have a better position including bombing “for fun”. Meanwhile Iran has said it did not ask to negotiate and has no intention of negotiating. Time benefits Iran and thus Iran is probably telling the truth here. As long as they can fly drones out, why stop.

For now, we do know that Iran is still sending drones throughout the middle east — the US embassy in Iraq, UAE infrastructure and Israel are still being hit. Trump has asked for help in escorting tankers and securing the straits — not exactly looking like dominance. Problems at Hormuz were easily foreseeable and asking for help raises questions — did the US not plan?. India has already negotiated safe passage for its vessels — it negotiated with Iran not the US, which indicates the straits is seen as contested.

More countries have also approached Iran, this increases its leverage. And Iran has also confirmed it will allow tankers whose cargo is priced and sold in yuan as opposed to dollars through safely. Changing the pricing of oil from US dollars has long been used to “troll” the US. Iran must have some confidence to poke the bear.

The Ukraine war also points to the ability of smaller powers to use cheaper munitions and technology to fight a larger power equipped with far superior arms. Ukraine managed to defeat the Russian navy while not having a navy of their own — simply with cheap drones. Although the US has naval and air superiority, as long as drones remain a threat, Iran is still a threat and this is not over. The Russians have boots on the ground but can’t manage to overwhelm Ukraine. Iran has its own supply of drones and the US is nowhere close to the supply chain.

The fact the FCC has seen the need to threaten news networks with license renewals points to an administration desperate to control a news cycle that is not all good news.

  19. I’m assuming both the Trump and Iranian admin are rational actors. After initial euphoria, the Trump admin needs an off-ramp and naturally wants to cast Iran as desperate and asking for negotiations hoping Iran might respond positively. From an Iranian perspective, there’s nothing to be gained from admitting they might want peace and play Trump’s game. Instead the rational course for Iran right now, is to continue to push drones at the Gulf States and keep the straits closed — both will put pressure on the US.

One person’s terrorist are another person’s freedom fighter. In the case of Hezbollah and the Houthi militias — they tend to keep their focus solely in the Middle East and have little interest in the outside world. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard does travel a bit mostly to “discipline” (assassinate, threaten, etc) exiles and domestic opponents overseas. Most authoritarian regimes commit similar actions — Putin, Xi, and Modi have all sent agents overseas to take care of exiled opponents. Iran isn’t an outlier in this regard — why the focus on Iran as opposed to the other authoritarian regimes (and the other three I mentioned have probably benefited from this attack)

And frankly, changing course is in their own business interests since trust in legacy media has now fallen to an all time low of just 9% and are ratings disasters.

The American people have subsidized broadcasters to the tune of billions of dollars by providing free access to the nation’s airwaves.

It is very important to bring trust back into media, which has earned itself the label of fake news.

When a political candidate is able to win a landslide election victory after in the face of hoaxes and distortions, there is something very wrong. It means the public has lost faith and confidence in the media. And we can’t allow that to happen.

  24. The Straits of Hormuz is virtually closed — Iran has stated they will not let the US and allied ships through the straits. None of the shipping companies appear to be testing that statement. A few ships are going through but they are Chinese, Indian or other similar nations.

Trump who a week ago said he didn’t need any help is now asking NATO and even China to come and help escort tankers. A sign that Hormuz is vulnerable and traffic is coming to a halt. And a sign that the early euphoria is ebbing.

I have no doubt that Iran is suffering great losses both military and civilian. And I have no doubt that US/Israel has naval and air superiority but my point still stands. The Ukraine war teaches us that a change in technology has made it possible for a smaller power to stymie and stop a larger power. As long as Iran has drone capacity and it does, it will continue to present a challenge.

As for the FCC — I’m amused that a party of free market capitalism sees the need for the gov’t to intervene to “correct” the news media’s bad “business” practises. Why not let them fail if they are doing so badly? The Republicans have become the party of big gov’t dictating how businesses should operate. The legacy media is a dying industry – why is the Trump admin interfering anyway. You can access the news everywhere — I read the Guardian, my right wing friends read zero-hedge, I scan my newsfeed and community groups, CBC fills in gaps…. The FCC can force ABC to report in a certain way but will anyone notice and doesn’t it make the Trump admin look weak and lacking confidence?
