  1. Well, we are supposed to get snow for the next couple of days, so I suppose I can claim winter. It felt really cold yesterday, too, in spite of the sunny day.

Janice, what is the advantage of chicory coffee for you?

  2. Now we have 48° with wind advisory until 8 p.m. With the wind it feels like the 30’s to me. After the 80’s lately, you can imagine I am shivering today.

Chicory is healthy and good for the brain I have heard. I will try to look up the benefits. I remembered my parents liked it so that was another draw.

  3. An online search gave this on chicory:

“Chicory root is a potent source of the prebiotic fiber inulin (up to 68%), which promotes gut health by feeding beneficial bacteria, reducing inflammation, and relieving constipation. It is a caffeine-free coffee substitute that aids in blood sugar management, improves nutrient absorption, and may support weight loss. It also contains antioxidants that may protect against cell damage. PJ's Coffee Of New OrleansPJ’s Coffee Of New Orleans +5

    Key Health Benefits

    • Improves Gut Health: The high inulin content acts as a prebiotic, which feeds good gut bacteria and helps reduce harmful bacteria.
    • Manages Blood Sugar: Studies suggest inulin helps manage blood sugar levels and may improve insulin resistance.
    • Reduces Inflammation: Chicory contains compounds like polyphenols and sesquiterpene lactones that may help lower inflammation.
    • Aids Digestion: It is known to help relieve constipation and improve overall bowel function.
    • Supports Weight Loss: Inulin can help control appetite, which may lead to reduced calorie intake.
    • Caffeine-Free Alternative: Because it is caffeine-free, it can help lower cortisol levels and reduce stress. WebMDWebMD +6

    Potential Risks and Considerations
While generally safe, some individuals may experience side effects, particularly if consuming large amounts:

    • Digestive Issues: Due to the high fiber content, it may cause gas, bloating, stomach cramps, and diarrhea.
    • Allergic Reactions: People allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, or daisies may also be allergic to chicory.
    • Pregnancy: Pregnant individuals should consult a doctor before consuming high amounts, as some research suggests it might cause bleeding. WebMDWebMD +4

Chicory is frequently used in coffee blends or as a food additive to increase fiber intake. EatingWellEatingWell

  4. And this:

“Chicory root fibres are prebiotics that selectively promote the growth of beneficial gut microbiota, particularly bifidobacteria. The activities of these beneficial bacteria and their metabolites have a far-reaching impact, like influencing the brain and one’s mood state.

  6. What I am drinking is a coffee and chicory blend. It is Community brand. It is an unusual flavor, but if you sample coffees at a coffee bar you will find some unusual blends. My first sip made me think that it is coffee with something of a green flavor. When I first had Sumatra, I found it to taste very different, but it became a favorite.
