It is a good thing that ICE can now get criminals out of the jails in MN. No one was taken from a school, hospital or church. The only ones interrupting a church service were protestors.
We passed some legitimate protestors last night. They were on all four corners of the street with signs and not impeding anyone. That is protesting.
All this mess in MN could have been avoided if the leaders did what was right in the first place. I hope they are all replaced with those who do better.
They’ve done interviews on the street with married women of color, asking if they have ID. Their typical response: “Why wouldn’t we have ID?” as they go on to explain that it wasn’t difficult to obtain. To claim otherwise is an insult to women of color.
Citizens the world over have to show ID in order to vote in their countries’ elections. There’s only one basic reason why Americans (associated with a certain party) wouldn’t want to show ID in order to vote – they want to cheat.
“A passport card is $65. Call this what it is for those who don’t have passports. For married women who took the name of husband, birth certificates don’t suffice. For those who lack birth certificates, copies can cost up to $40. This is a poll tax. Voter suppression.”
“A Real ID *is* sufficient. Part of the SAVE act provision in the amendment suggestion explicitly details that anyone who is entitled to a copy of their records WILL NOT have to pay a fee! Read the Act yourself and stop lying!”
“BREAKING: Sen. Josh Hawley just pushed for a CRIMINAL INDICTMENT against Minnesota AG Keith Ellison because he tried HELPING fraudster avoid being caught
“You took $10,000 from them 9 days after the meeting!”
“YOU helped fraudsters defraud the state of $9B, and you got a FAT campaign contribution out of it! You ought to be INDICTED!”
“They BEGGED you to help them — and YOU AGREED TO IT! It’s ALL ON TAPE.”
“You said: send me the names of these folks investigating them. YOU SAID IT. ‘I’ll take the list, call the person at Education, and say, what’s going on?!'”
“They CAME to you asking for help getting investigators off their backs!”
“Why’d you do it, why’d you help them?!”
ELLISON: “I didn’t do it!”
HAWLEY: “That’s not you? Is that a ventriloquist?! BS!”
The main argument against the ID requirement in the SAVES Act is not that women can’t do it but that it involves a longer process and more money than men. Thus its discriminatory and constitutes a poll tax.
There are easier ways to ensure its only citizens voting and the people match their voter card. I’ve mentioned it here before but Canada has a very simple system — you check a box in your income tax form to enrol in the voter database. A federal database can check for naturalised citizens and then share with the provinces who can double check for births. Once an election is called, voter cards are sent to your address (which is updated every year when you file income taxes) informing you of your polling station and early voting. You take the card along with a piece of ID and go vote. In Ontario every adult has a photo health card (free unless you lose it) and thus there’s no issue.
Last night I read a lengthy post from an American who flew domestically often and was told by her employer to get a REAL ID to make security easier. From Virginia she filed an online application for her Louisiana birth certificate ($10), she was then told that wasn’t enough — she needed official long form marriage certificates from both her marriages. So she filed for one in Arkansas and the other in Virginia ($30 a piece) along with one divorce paper ($30). She then spent an afternoon waiting at the MVA. When she complained to her husband who also had to get a REAL ID, he thought she was whining — after all it only took him $10 and an hour at the MVA. It cost her about 100$ and hours of her time — it’s a poll tax applied in a discriminatory fashion.
If the Republicans were really interested in voter security, they could look at the best practises in Canada and elsewhere and maybe apply them. As an added bonus, more people would enrol and it would be easier to vote. But it’s quite clear, that’s not what the Republicans want — they want to suppress the female vote.
Remittances are extremely common — the Philippines would collapse without it. Sure, it takes money out of one society and funnels it elsewhere but then again why else do Filipino nurses come here? Without Filipino women health care in many places in the western world would collapse — thus its a win-win for both.
I thought Republicans liked family values — but now they are against people taking care of their extended families no matter where they are?
I have seen comments here and on Facebook responding to that aspect of the SAVE Act which involves married women and their identification. Somehow, though, I missed what the act actually would require.
One comment I read seemed to indicate that somehow she would have to include ID with her birth name as well as ID with her married name. Is that accurate at all? What kind of ID would a married woman actually have to have?
Speaking of ID, after Hubby died, I could not find our marriage certificate, which he had put “in a safe place”. (Still haven’t found it! It must be very safe, even from me!) Going to the town hall to get a copy, I needed another form of ID to get it, but not being a driver anymore, I did not have one. Being a small town, the clerk was merciful and took my word for who I am, letting me have the copy of my marriage certificate.
Then I decided that I really should get a non-driver ID, which I then needed that marriage certificate for. At least I knew where my birth certificate and Social Security card were!
I think what helped the clerk decide to give me the copy of my marriage certificate was that Nightingale was with me. She probably showed her own ID and vouched for me.
