AJ — sports and sports media is generally right wing — you should watch hockey, the most right wing of team sports. The champion Florida Panthers went to the White House all in red ties to make Trump happy.
The Olympics has a lot of journalists who aren’t normally sports journalists — so they deliberately ask non sport questions because they have no idea about snowboarding, ski jumping, etc. Europeans genuinely think the US has descended into a fascist state — even right wing Europeans perceive this, only right wing populists think its okay. Hence the questions asked of American athletes. And the American athletes answers are as ambiguous as possible — support freedom, equality, American values etc. As big as a non-story, fluff piece as you can get yet right wing Americans are upset? strange.
The Epstein files should be non-partisan and above politics. That’s how the non-American world is responding and even the leftist Americans. The girls involved want justice and then there’s national security interest. The economic, academic and political elite were involved in child sex trafficking and thus easily blackmailed. Forget about when it happened, its time for hearing, inquiries and investigation.
The statute of limitations has not expired in some of the crimes and given the national security interest it really doesn’t matter. Maxwell’s transfer to Club Fed should be investigated. Epstein’s sweetheart deal with Acosta needs to be investigated. It’s obvious that the DOJ and FBI have been compromised for decades — it needs to be investigated. And so on and so on. Approaching this from a party loyalty perspective will ensure that national security continues to be compromised, people will continue to be exploitative, and justice will not be done.
Given the behaviour of the DOJ and the FBI, does anyone think new victims will come forward? Given the high level of suicides and car accidents, does anyone think people will come forward
I used to mock an old high school friend saying extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence; well the evidence is extraordinary and thus we should demand an extraordinary response
The biggest criticism of the SAVES act I hear is its insistence on birth names matching current IDs. This will make it difficult for married and divorced women to vote. They can still vote but they will have more requirements to get the right ID than their male counterpoints. Some think this is because women tend to vote Democrat. It might have the opposite effect as traditional Republican voting women tend to change their last names when married as opposed to more liberal women.
The push to “nationalize” the election is interesting. For years Republicans have pushed states rights in determining election rules – voter registration and redistricting are all the purview of the state. They attacked the Voters Rights Acts as federal intrusion and the conservative Supreme Court largely agreed but now they reversed course and are against states rights — its not principle its convenience. At least Rand Paul is consistent.
Well first off if women change their name differing from their birth certificate they are smart enough and capable to fix that…you cannot just go changing your name without some effort. I had to change my SS card name when I married. I had to change my Driver’s license in CO because the DMV made me include my maiden name as my middle name instead of my read middle name….CO employees being all progressive ya know…I am woman hear me roar and all….it should have never happened according the the SS administration.
And this? sports and sports media is generally right wing…seriously? Perhaps being in Canada you haven’t heard of the NFL threat to never have games in GA due to a bill passed to protect clergy from lawsuits for not affirming homosexual marriages. The Governor didn’t sign it due to the threat. They also threatened TX in the same manner for the heartbeat bill…if they passed it no more Super Bowls for YOU!! Not so right wing eh? These are two egregious moves by sports that caused us to never support nor watch…I cleaned out my pantry yesterday during the non event….
Sports and sports media is generally right wing – Wrong.
… they deliberately ask non sport questions because they have no idea about snowboarding, ski jumping, etc. – No, they do so b/c they are seeking ‘gotcha’ moments from high-profile American athletes to try to make the current US admin look bad and influence policy.
Europeans genuinely think the US has descended into a fascist state – I am around Europeans all the time, and I don’t know anyone who thinks this… anyone who does should look up the definition of ‘fascist’ and re-think their position.
As NJ points out, women do have to go through some effort to change their last names and have their IDs line up. That’s precisely the point critics of the SAVES Act are making in this case — women will have to go through more effort than men and their IDs will have greater scrutiny. Now is this a side effect of the bill or intentional? It is of course discriminatory.
Judicial precedent is pretty straight forward — the state runs the elections. IF the courts are consistent, the SAVES Act won’t survive.
All of this reinforces the idea among many on the left that the Trump admin is trying to fix/steal the midterms. When your starting point is the other side cheated in 2020, then it becomes much easier to justify your own cheating. Thus we have Gabbard raiding an election office in Georgia, Bondi offering to withdraw ICE from Minnesota if the state hands over voter info, and of course the demand from Trump that states gerrymander to favour Republicans.
As an outsider observer, I’m curious if all of this will work or backfire on the Republicans. Gerrymandering for example only works if the past data matches future behaviour but if only 50% of the district voted last time it only takes an increase in the voting rate to upset an attempt in gerrymandering — a real danger in Texas.
My main interest in commenting on the Olympic coverage was how the most banal answers given by American athletes — ie they were competing for family, friends, the American dream, freedom, etc etc — yet this offended some people. The questions and answers were part of the same old fluff and filler you find in Olympic coverage; non-sport journalists trying to fill copy .
Professional sports are right wing as is the media that usually covers it. Hockey is probably the most conservative but the owners and most of the star players in the other leagues are also quite conservative. Kraft, owner of the Patriots, for example is well known for his support of Trump and other Republicans.
Corporate league HQs differ in that they know they need to maintain and expand the league’s fan base. Hence, they host pride nights, endorse minority rights, etc all in an attempt to gain more viewers — its part of the business model; call it capitalism. However, individual teams are headed by conservatives.
The half time show at the Superbowl is a good example — for years the owners and the NFL were content to bring in “retro” acts like the Stones, Paul McCartney (non-Americans btw) – acts they liked, but as the years progressed they realised the under 40 crowd wasn’t watching so they hired Jay Z to modernise and make the show hip enough for younger people. This brought in acts like Rihanna and The Weeknd (non-Americans btw). The half time show has become relevant again attracting non-football fans. I know nothing about Bad Bunny (an American btw) but apparently before he was announced as the headlining act he was one of the highest streamed acts on Spotify. Sure some older people would like to see U2 or maybe the Stones again — I wouldn’t mind Nirvana or the Clash (both lead singers are dead unfortunately), however corporate NFL wants the largest audience possible and GenX music acts won’t help.
Objecting to Bad Bunny singing in Spanish is a bit strange. Didn’t the boy band Menudo back in the 70s sing in Spanish or at least partly? And some of the biggest acts touring North America are K-pop boy bands who sing entirely in Korean yet attract teen girls from all cultures and languages. In any case, when a country annexes territory that has been historically been Spanish speaking there are consquencces.
I saw clips of the half time show (no cable means no bread and circuses for me). I’m not sure what the problem was — it seemed to be a short outline of Puerto Rican history set to music. And in the end, he calls for unity in the Americas (ie the continent). The history lesson did include slavery, exploitation and conquest — was that the obscene part?
You and I both have connections in Europe, but its a diverse place
Most of my family and friends in the Netherlands, Germany and Poland are what I would call centre-right voting mostly for “Christian democrat” type parties. Traditionally they believe the image of the US as a place of freedom, diversity, human rights, economic freedom, etc etc. Over the last year, there has been an increase in this group, both on my personal level and in the news, to start to doubt that this vision or image of America still exists. (Trumps Greenland fiasco really did some damage here)
Now about 25% of Europeans support what i would call “fascist” parties — right wing populists, nationalists, and anti-democratic. For them, traditional liberal democracy has failed and needs to be replaced (liberal democracy, in the European sense, that is the ideas of the American and French Revolution and the post WW2 era). This group supports Trump and MAGA Republicans. It’s the other 75% of Europeans (conservative Christian Democrats to traditional Social Democrats) who have far more doubts.
And of course, I’ve spent quite a bit of time in the last two years hanging out in the old East Berlin with my daughter. The collection of leftists from all over Europe and beyond who have made Berlin home is quite impressive and definitely gives me a different impression of European politics then you would have (Czech Republic right? which is far more right wing and populists)
So what you’ve just expressed is that there are a variety of political viewpoints in Europe. Therefore, you shouldn’t be making the blanket claim that Europeans genuinely think the US has descended into a fascist state.
They’ve done interviews on the street with married women of color, asking if they have ID. Their typical response: “Why wouldn’t we have ID?” as they go on to explain that it wasn’t difficult to obtain. To claim otherwise is an insult to women of color.
Citizens the world over have to show ID in order to vote in their countries’ elections. There’s only one basic reason why Americans (associated with a certain party) wouldn’t want to show ID in order to vote – they want to cheat.
Objecting to Bad Bunny singing in Spanish is a bit strange.
Over 300 million Americans are native English speakers, and it is our national language. Of course we would expect English to be the main language sung/spoken at our biggest annual cultural event. I know that the Left is trying to make a statement, but that was a bad mistake.
What was obscene were Bad Bunny’s lyrics – I take it that you haven’t read them, hrw? Terrible mistake #2.

DOJ and House Oversight records show sustained coordination from 2017–2019.
Epstein advised Bannon on funding (“need to understand flow of funds”), strategy, and messaging (“brilliant… help me develop that argument”).
He pushed EU figures, claimed governments would fall “as planned,” arranged foreign introductions, and warned Bannon to “take no heat re me.”
Their collaboration ended only when Epstein was arrested in July 2019.
