“Breaking: In a 6-3 vote, SCOTUS is temporarily blocking a lower court order and allowing the Trump Administration to require that all new passports display a person’s biological sex at birth.

Came across this today in which a Nigerian Christian writes about the violence that is going on in Nigeria. . .
~ “The Middle Belt conflict is mostly between cattle herders (predominantly Muslim, ethnically Fulani) and farming communities (predominantly Christians of various ethnicities).
[…]That current climate, along with the conflicts’ deep roots, has led to an intense distrust and a thick fog of misinformation.
To claim that there’s a Christian genocide taking place in Nigeria, there must be clear evidence or proof that the attackers and perpetrators of violence have the specific intent of destroying the group they’re attacking for no reason other than them being Christian. But many attacks taking place across Nigeria lack precision. Those carrying out the violence don’t appear particularly discerning.
A group of herders will descend on a remote village in a pre-dawn raid. They proceed to shoot at anything and everyone, burning down buildings without discrimination. At daybreak, they retreat into the bush.
[…]
Insisting on a larger narrative—without compelling, incontrovertible data—usually results in defaulting to our own biases and positions, ignoring the complexity of matters and just how much isn’t yet clear.

3. What Christians Can Do?
Here are four simple suggestions for well-meaning Christians outside Nigeria.
i. Stop Describing What’s Happening in Nigeria as a Genocide There is a reason why the word genocide is reserved for the worst moments in history. It is one of the most horrendous crimes known to man. But we don’t want to be the boy who cried wolf when unsure about what’s really going on. God forbid that in the future something worse starts happening to Nigerian Christians. Would anyone take us seriously then? Let’s rather say “there are too many Christians being killed in Nigeria.” Better still, “there are too many people getting killed in Nigeria.” This will take much of the sting out of the debate.” ~
The other suggestions were “ii. Press Nigerian Authorities to Take Security More Seriously;” “iii. Come Alongside the Nigerian Church;“ and of course, “iv. Pray”.
I was going to make a joke about Americans having a passport but apparently its now over 50%. That’s actually higher than most European countries but in many Euro countries you only need an EU ID to travel with the continent (ie the Schengen zone). But it’s still below the 70-80% of Canadians and UK residents. (We need one to go to the US or Cuba; the UK now needs one for Spain)
However, this seems like an unnecessary thing to take to the Supreme Court. You don’t mess with your gender on an international ID — sure Canada or the Netherlands may let you in with a different presenting gender (parts not matching the M or F), but even within the EU this will hold you up at passport control. And if I was a social conservative, this is one of the things I would like people to do (ie choose a gender for their passport) under the FAFO heading — a life lesson if you will. You won’t get out of most airports with that type of passport.
Both the Republicans and traditional Democrats are scrambling to cope with Mamdani’s win along with wins elsewhere. The NYT has an article minimising it saying it doesn’t mean what people think it does. Meanwhile, Republicans are doubling down on anti-immigrant slogans. Both are wrong.
Read the exit poll I linked yesterday — it’s clearly a demographic switch. Many of the winning Democratic candidates are younger — in their 40s. Boomers are finally retiring and millennials are taking over. In many of the local elections turn out among youth was higher than in last year’s presidential election. The under 30 crowd will turn out and vote if they are motivated. And Mamdani motivated them with the right economic message.
The Democrats can continue to try and build a “uniparty” coalition but if they do they will continue to lose. Harris courted and got the endorsement of Dick Cheney and then wondered why she lost Michigan. Mamdani points the way — motivated the non-voters to vote, stop chasing the old men of the past and get the kids out.
I’m a little shocked that they think so little of the persecution faced in Nigeria. It’s ignorant, and it’s kinda gross. There is so much video available that make their assertions laughable.
Clearly, this by definition, is genocide
“Genocide is the deliberate destruction of a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group, in whole or in part. It involves a specific intent to destroy the group, which is a key component that differentiates it from other atrocities. The term can include acts such as killing, causing serious bodily or mental harm, inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about physical destruction, preventing births within the group, or forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.”
“Bill Maher’s recent Real Time rant exposed a grim truth: over 100,000 Christians killed in Nigeria since 2009, with 18,000+ churches burned by groups like Boko Haram. In 2025, thousands more died, including 200+ in Benue’s June massacres. Yet global attention is near-silent. Nigeria’s crisis, fueled by jihadist violence and ethnic strife, demands action. Where are the protests?”
A number of videos are available too with a quick search, but I will spare you the gory details of the Islamists slaughtering Christian villages, which the Islamists themselves happily post for the world to see, so proud are they of their deeds.
Pretending it’s not really happening, or somehow to a lesser degree, as if that makes a difference, is wrong.
“Pokrovsk is the last major fortified city in Donbass – it absolutely is highly significant – the way is now open to the Dneiper river across flat terrain. More than the terrain – the Ukrainian defence is collapsing as the war of attrition finally bites hard.”
Of the approximate 2 million people in Gaza, 70 000 were killed in the last two years and countless more were wounded and disabled. Almost the entire population has been left homeless, vulnerable and subject to food scarcity. This was perpetuated by a state power and is clearly genocide or at the very least an attempt at genocide.
Trump supporters want the attacks on Christians in Nigeria to be considered a genocide, but would not use that word to describe Israeli actions in Gaza. Clearly there’s some bias here.
There’s no doubt in my mind that the violence in Nigeria has a religious element but that’s not the only element. In addition, the violence towards Christians and/or farmers is not led by a state actor rather terrorist groups or oppositional groups ie Islamic groups and/or nomadic pastoralists.
Climate change and environmental degradation is motivating both groups as farmers are moving into land previously used by herdsman and vice versa as both groups are moving away from non-productive land and search for new land to continue with traditional practises. Its a resource war fuelled by climate change.
Meanwhile Biafra separatists in oil rich areas are fighting against the central gov’t. This too gets casts as Christian separatists fighting against a predominantly Muslim central gov’t (mainly by the separatists seeking western support) but the conflict is more about resources than religion
“You are a taker, not a maker. All you’ve done your whole life is take from the makers of the world.
The zero-sum mindset you have is at the root of so much evil. Once you realize that civilization is not zero-sum and that it is about making far more than one consumes, then it becomes obvious that the path to prosperity for all is just let the makers make.
Regarding Tesla, the reality is that I have been given nothing.
However, if I lead Tesla to become the most valuable company in the world by far and it stays that way for 5 years, shareholders voted to award me 12% of what is built. Anyone who wants to come along for the ride can buy Tesla stock.
If Tesla “merely” becomes a $1.999 trillion dollar company, I get nothing. This is a great deal for shareholders, which is why they voted so overwhelmingly to approve this, for which I am immensely grateful.
And they did so by a margin far more than you won your political seat.”
—
“And Tesla employs thousands of people, has brought manufacturing back to America, is decarbonizing the world and pays out tens of billions in wages every year!”
The man who wrote the TGC article is a Nigerian Christian himself. He states that the situation is more complicated than it is being portrayed, but he does not deny that Christians are being killed, only that it may be more an issue of herders (who are mostly Muslim) versus farmers (who are mostly Christian).
Janice – I am not insisting anything. To me, it was worth considering what an actual Nigerian Christian might have to say about the matter. You can consider it or not.
How can we have truly informed views if we don’t consider different aspects or views of a matter?
Proverbs even touches on this: “The first one to plead his cause seems right, Until his neighbor comes and examines him.” (Proverbs 18:17)
“6 -3
Six. To. Three.
Three Supreme Court justices actually voted to allow people to lie about their biological sex on their passports.”
