~ President Donald Trump said Tuesday he will double the tariffs imposed on steel and aluminum imported from Canada, an escalation of the brewing economic feud between the U.S. and its largest trading partner.
Trump posted to his Truth Social platform that the tariffs would go from 25% to 50% starting Wednesday, a move that comes in response to the province of Ontario placing a 25% tariff on electricity coming into the United States.
Trump added that he would be declaring a “national emergency” for the three states Ontario has targeted so that the tariffs could go into effect. …
… “The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State,” Trump wrote. “This would make all Tariffs, and everything else, totally disappear.”
CNBC reported that Trump had not yet signed formal paperwork to officially increase the tariffs to 50%, citing a senior administration official who added it was “in the works” and remained “a threat” rather than an action, until that paperwork was prepared and signed.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford had on Monday announced a 25% surcharge on electricity tapped by some 1.5 million residents of Michigan, Minnesota and New York in response to Trump’s recent bellicose language toward Canada.
Stocks briefly fell to their lowest point of the trading day Tuesday on the news. The S&P 500 was down as much as 0.4%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gave up 400 points, declining more than 1%. … ~

Not sure why it matters whether they are Alawite or Christian — they are being killed. My comments yesterday were to indicate that it appeared the violence was retribution for on-going rear guard fighting between Alawite Assad supporters and some factions of the current ruling coalition (and the factions were Turkish supported). Historically Christians in Syria lived near the capital/Lebanese border or in the case of Assyrians in the east near Iraq. The area where the massacres are taking place are predominantly Alawite.

I predict a lot of statistical revisionism in the coming months as the Trump admin tries to paint the coming recession as a Biden recession. Even two weeks ago, some in the admin were musing that it was time to reconfigure how GDP was figured out so it wouldn’t come out negative. I’m not a big fan of GDP calculations and I’m amused that so many place faith in whether its negative or positive in terms of recessionary economics. However, in order to compare the economy from month to month the calculations need to be consistent. Of course some will say the whole point of revisionism is to lessen any faith in statistics making it harder to criticise the Trump admin’s performance.
Despite all the attempts at confusion, its clear there is a loss of confidence — all the electoral bounce that stocks and the dollar received have vanished and everything is back to its October valuations. Right now the US dollar is in decline against the Euro and even the yuan, and a strong dollar is needed to ward off inflation caused by tariffs.
My premier is a bombastic fool who emulates and imitates Trump. Why either one was re-elected is beyond my comprehension. I obviously did not vote for Ford. The electricity threat is a hollow one if exercised by Ontario; we don’t supply much electricity to the US. Now if Quebec exercised the same threat, then it’s serious — they supply most of New England and New York City. Apparently he has rescinded his “tariff”. My guess is the federal gov’t called him up and said wtf and his Republican friends in the US (and he has quite a few) probably told him to cool it. Ford is well known for walking back policy decisions quickly when they turn out badly — he’s not much different than Trump who keeps postponing decisions because its clearly not a good idea.
However, Trump is wrong in that the US can do without our lumber or energy (crude oil). There’s also some potash and rare metals to consider. In any case, either tariffs or a ban in those areas will cause massive price increases. As for cars, its impossible to tell where a car is actually built — depends on definition even. Do you count where its assembled or do you count by percentatge of parts (by volume or cost?) To unpack the supply chain that makes cars in North America will cost everyone.
HRW, correct (your 2nd graph above @6:30), cars with all the various components and parts that are shipped back and forth across borders are indeed a mishmash.
So we’ll see which tariffs (or threats of tariffs) will pop up next. Tomorrow is another day!
