  1. Christians who don’t vote are doing a disservice to their country, their brethren, and allowing evil to flourish. I’m sorry if me saying so bothers some people, but these are facts.

And so there’s no confusion as to who posted this…

“32 million church-going Christians are “unlikely” to vote in this election. The last contest was decided by thousands of votes, not millions.

This election is ours if Christians will do their duty and vote to restrain evil.”

  2. I’d heard the number was 40 million before, AJ. Maybe some are now realizing the importance since the number has gone down. I think many in that group might be nominal Christians. Only God knows.

Here is a fill-in-the-gap news story of a man who was stuck in Asheville but made it home for his daughter’s birthday on Sunday. News of how people work together and God works things for good for those who keep the faith. A faith encouragement to any who listen:

  3. I watched a small portion of the rally last night. I saw the well spoken black man talking about the kind of man he is. He spoke eloquently. I disagreed with some of what he said, of course, but liked other parts. He said, “I am not the kind of man who laughs when a former president gets shot in the head.” Thumbs up to that! He also said something along the lines of, “I am not the kind of man who would take away the right of a woman to do as she pleases with her body.”

The thing about abortion that goes unsaid and unrecognized is that abortion takes away the right of the life (girl or boy) in the womb to have any say so about their body.

I did not hear Kamala speak except for the opening line I heard on the news this morning. I will say her pronunciation of “Geargia” was the worst butchering I have ever heard. She’s falling down on the fake accents.

The news said 23,000 were in attendance. I saw the stadium holds 13,000. I never saw anything about how many were at Trump’s rally when I searched for that but his rally location had 10,000 seats. I also heard this was Kamala’s largest rally so far. I know she felt loved on by the Atlanta Dems.

My high school played football games there at times as that was used by county schools that did not have stadiums of their own.

  4. Abortion also takes away a father’s ability to protect his own child, and works against what should be a mother’s natural desire to care for her child. Why it has become modern America’s hill to die on, I’ll never know.

Hey AJ, what about those who live in a state where their vote has no possibility of affecting the outcome, say California?

How about a situation where both people running are extremely evil? What if, say, both are pro-abortion? What if Hitler is running against Stalin–do we somehow have the moral requirement of choosing one and voting for him?

What if one politician has clearly better positions on several of the issues, but you consider his character to be totally untrustworthy and you are completely bewildered about what his followers have become, how following that man seems to have twisted them somehow into making defense of this morally questionable human becoming one of their highest life priorities. What then?

  5. Well Cheryl do the math.

Divide even the lower 32 million number. That’s several hundred thousand votes in each state. That is enough for your vote to matter, and swing elections in several states, even in more liberal states. The Electoral Vote system would swing massively to one side.

This would crush the Democrats. But we have people who instead of just voting, make excuses for why they won’t. Christians voting could swing the election innearly every state. Again, just do the math.

  6. I listened to some of that pastor’s speech and did not agree with many of his words. It did make me think. I do not know if he is a believer or not, that is God’s deal. But he did say, Christians should be concerned for the poor as God mentioned. True, say I, but that is not for the government but for we as individuals to do. We can tell the government to make murder illegal.

anyway, it gave me a better understanding of how Christians can vote Democrat, though I think they are deceived.

And, yes, the baby is totally a unique human being and has the right to life. We have the responsibility to care for the mom and baby and family.

“The refusal to accept the legitimacy of the 2016 election is a cause of massive ongoing problems. From 2016-2020, McConnell either aided or impotently fought the Russia collusion hoax, costly investigations, the (1st) bogus impeachment, a well-organized and funded resistance “

  11. World Magazine column today notes that contentious elections are nothing new. Take a breath.

~ On Nov. 5, we may very well experience the disappointment of not knowing who will occupy the White House for the next four years before we call it a night and go to bed. By all accounts, it will be a close race. About half the people who vote will be frustrated, angry, and generally long-faced when the final results are tallied. We should act like adults on our social media accounts and be watchful for our safety in the days and weeks ahead.

But this is normal for us.The 2024 election is not Armageddon. Democracy is not at stake. Our electoral system has been tried and tested, and it is supple and resilient. Whatever happens on Election Day and the days or weeks or months that follow, we can be confident that the losing party will get another shot in 2028. Politics is not ultimate. God is ultimate. Let us live carefully under His gaze. ~

  12. AJ – from yesterday

You need to stop relying on random tweets for information. Canada’s immigration system does have a points based program but it also has a student visa to permanent residence program. Its the latter program that’s being cut back and revamped. Canada’s student migrant visa massively exploded after the provincial governments wanted it increased as foreign students paying full fees would subsidise Canadian students. This was partially a provincial issue not federal.

The other issues other than housing have little to do with immigration. GDP per capita correlates to the value of the Cdn dollar since GDP is measured world-wide in American dollars. In 2021, the Cdn dollar was high so GDP went up and now the dollar is low so GDP is down. And the Canadian dollar is low because interest rates have been cut for the last year. And interest rates are being cut, because inflation is now below 2%. Health care is provincial and I have no clue how the tweet could connect euthanasia with immigration. If anything, immigrants are more socially conservative than Canadians and wouldn’t use the euthanasia program.

The current election date is next October. Our current conservative leader wants it earlier because the economic news is getting better. However the Liberals are supported by Quebec separatists and the socialist NDP in order to implement a new dental and pharmacare program.

  13. AJ — you do know there is a disagreement among American Christians about which candidate to support. You never know, you may be encouraging Harris support Christians to vote. Plus, of course, Cheryl’s comments and questions.

Similarly comments could be made about Jews and Muslims demographics. People assume unanimity among religious groups. However, not all Jews support Democrats or Israel. And Muslims are also diverse – some even like Trump.

  14. I feel the small business owning Muslims have good reason to support Trump, but they may not be vocal about doing so. Same with other blocks of voters. I think there might be a lot of voters who are strange bedfellows this time around because of extremism that has not happened before.

The World article is interesting, but takes for granted that Jesus is not coming until later, after the next election cycle happens, the way it reads. Interesting nod to sovereignty and yet . . .

  15. As for voting, I believe we all take that seriously (as we should). I am voting. For whom (or whom not) is my call based on conscience informed by Scripture.

I trust God to handle outcome and all the rest, be it His will to bring about judgment, blessing — or some kind of mixture of both — on our worldly nation going forward.

Apparently, Mr. Wilsey doesn’t realize how thoroughly the Socialists/Communists have infiltrated every area of our government (and society).

Whatever happens on Election Day and the days or weeks or months that follow, we can be confident that the losing party will get another shot in 2028.

No, we can’t be confident, not confident at all. Apparently Wilsey also isn’t aware what has happened historically when the Communists take over in a given country. I’ve seen it up close – it isn’t pretty.

We had clients from Cuba. They would have never voted what we currently have back into office. They told of what Communism did to their nation.

  19. N Korean is reportedly now sending arms to (Putin’s) Russia. Just saying — if folks on the far right even are (still?) concerned at all about global threats including communism (?) and what is going on in the rest of the world behind our borders. I’m not so sure anymore from what I’m seeing.

Cuban immigrants (fleeing Castro) have always been conservative – in the somewhat recent past at least, since the 1960s.

Secular politics are curious, “sides” and issues move and change (including on global concerns), issues swap and flip back and forth from party to party depending on which way the wind blows and who is running for office. Populism unleashes candidates who can turn things upside down (in a bad way) as it focuses on a single personality that gathers devoted followers.

Not saying this election isn’t important, they all are. But perspective as believers is needed to temper and clarify our worldview so as we don’t forget Who is really in charge of all this.

Long term? Nations come and go, I know that’s not popular to say, but it’s historically accurate. We are living in a mere blip of time. I hope the U.S. goes on for many years and generations to come. But that, too, is in God’s hands. We’ll all be long gone soon enough.

  20. 2028 — we will see, Janice. But should the nation still be standing, another presidential election will be the case.

Jesus will return, we all agree. The timing is an unknown. And guessing about that “timing” appears to be a futile exercise as generations have gotten it wrong consistently. God’s not that easy to predict 🙂 It will be surprising when it happens (hey, may it be tomorrow!) — because it’s His timing, and not ours. Until then, we have our marching orders as believers living in what are all alien nations to some degree.

  23. Not voting isn’t a plan, that’s a surrender to the will of others who did.

Trusting in God while refusing to do the one good and simple deed you could, and hoping God will do something while you sit on your hands because of “fill in the excuse here…”

Either outcome, you get to fall back on the old “well it was God’s will…”

    Great plan.

As long as your conscience isn’t scarred by voting for someone you’ve judged as unworthy, who cares about the rest of the country, right?

I’m hoping God works for our good thru his people getting off their hands and voting, not surrendering. Surrendering gets us more of what we have now. No thanks, I’m doing what I can. We all should. I seriously doubt God wishes us to be neutral in such a clear battle between good and evil. There is a clear and obvious distinction between the 2 sides here. We should all be voting accordingly.

  25. It’s a lively thread today. Part of what I love about this site is the variety of opinion, argument, passion and personality of the people who share—that, and the love of the word and the Word.

I’ve already voted and I’ve done what I thought was the right thing. But every person must be convinced in their own mind about who to vote for or whether to vote. And no one need be intimidated or feel like you must apologize for your decision whatever it is. I’m sure that everyone on the blog gives the matter sincere and prayerful consideration.

But for some reason I don’t look at people that I see as false shepherds, who are leading people and have great influence, in the same way. Even though they may just be wrong or deceived, I don’t seem to have a lot of charity for those. Probably a personal failing that I have yet to fully uncover and examine.

  26. Perhaps what Eric Metaxas wrote in If You Can Keep It might be helpful here:

“What the Founders gave us is like that flame. There is something holy about it, but once they passed it to us, their job was done. They could only hope and pray that we would guard it and tend it and keep it, so that it wouldn’t go out. That flame was passed from them to others, who passed it to others, who passed it to others – and it is at this moment in history in our hands, yours and mine. The burden of “keeping it,” as (Benjamin) Franklin said, is excrutiatingly important. And here is the main reason for that: Once it goes out, it goes out forever. If the flame given to us goes out, we not only lose the light ourselves forever but will also lose the ability to pass it along to all those others who are waiting for it. That is what makes keeping it so important and the thought of letting it go out so terrible and tragic.

I’m afraid that we are in serious danger of letting it go out in our generation. So it is genuinely urgent that we understand where we are and that we do all we can to make sure that we do not let this flame of ordered liberty given to us by the Founders go out. We must do it not just for our own sake but also for the sake of all those waiting for us to light their candles, so to speak. We must do what we can to see what we have been given and to do what is expected of us. We have a charge to keep. This book is about seeing that we understand this again – and that we keep that charge, that republic, that glorious promise.”

  27. Everywhere on my news feed I read “If Trump/Dems get in again, the US is done” — in reality what will happen is the US may take a 2-4 year turn in a direction you don’t like. You can readjust it on the next election. There isn’t an existential threat to the union. Now from my biased point of view, Trump is a greater threat to stability – Putin, isolationism, gov’t ignorance, etc but I think there’s enough intelligence in the Republican party to limit the damage.

It’s unfortunate in the Anglo-American world we have winner take all elections through first past the post. A system of proportional representation would force public compromises and less U turns in policy.

The worse thing to do on a personal level is to castigate people for their choices that’s what authoritarians do. Democracies are where we attempt to persuade, compromise and tolerate.

  28. AJ linked a tweet earlier about WaPo not endorsing anyone for president. NPR gives much more information. The editorial page editor had an endorsement for Harris already written and ready for publication after it was reviewed by Jeff Bezos, the paper’s owner. Bezos nixed the endorsement even though the paper has endorsed a candidate for the last 36 years until now. The staff was very unhappy with the decision, and the editor-at-large resigned from the editorial board NPR points out that Bezos has substantial government contracts that could be affected by the election.

It looks like Bezos might be viewing the election as a probable toss-up or Trump win.

  29. Lancaster county voter registration irregularities — that’s a heavily Republican county with a large Amish population. Why would the Democrats attempt to over-register voters here and with the county electoral commission under Republican control that seems like a really bad idea.

Harris went to Texas – Beyonce is performing. I thought this was strange. She’s behind by about 7% in Texas but interestingly Cruz is only ahead by 1-2%. Is she so confident that she has time to go to Texas to support the down ballot? Texas is a long term project for the Democrats – as it urbanizes it will lean ever more to the Democrats and gerrymandering will longer work. Personally, I think she should be shoring up the Rust Belt but maybe her internal polls are suggesting something else.

  32. So fraud is happening but NPR couldn’t resist putting in a paragraph about Tina Peters. Deflect and distract is the name of the Democrat game! And there are still missing ballots in El Paso County but no mention of those!

Mesa County District Attorney Dan Rubinstein launched a criminal investigation into the stolen ballots. The news comes almost a month after former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters was sentenced to nine years of incarceration for her role in breaching county voting equipment.

The secretary of state’s office said the ballots were intercepted before being received by the voters they were intended for and then later submitted fraudulently. They were mailed back to the clerk’s office, instead of being put in a drop box, which is under video surveillance.

Three ballots got through the system and have been counted as legitimate votes, but the others were stopped, according to the secretary of state’s office. The three victims of ballot theft will get another opportunity to cast a vote.

Secretary of State Jena Griswold said the fraud came to light through the state’s signature validation process. People also contacted the clerk’s office to say they’d received alerts that their ballots were being processed, despite never having received them.

  33. Individual soul liberty means that we cannot bind the conscience of a brother or sister in Jesus Christ in a matter that is not clearly revealed in Scripture. As God’s word instructs us in Romans 14, “Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things.”

Some early Christians had good reasons for believing that they should not eat meat. Others had good reasons for believing that they could eat meat. Each group was commanded to follow their own conscience in this matter without condemning the other.

By the same token, if your conscience instructs you to vote for Donald Trump, then vote for Donald Trump. If your conscience instructs you to vote some someone else, then vote for someone else. Pursue the things that make for peace and the things by which we may edify each other.

  34. Tychicus @5:10 That’s a very moving excerpt from the Metaxas book. I’ve sometimes been tempted to wonder if we’ve already let the flame die. But the fact that we’re here freely talking about it indicates that it burns still.

I’ve supported the Trump agenda since he came on the scene in 2016. All we can ask of our neighbors is to be and act obediently according to the light God grants each of us—and pray that will be sufficient to keep the flame burning long enough to pass it down. These conversations can help by allowing each participant to add their little piece; and I see enormous value in those pieces and contributions. And although the country is really in dire straits in many respects, we did not get here in the last 10 years, in my opinion. We’re simply beginning to arrive at the destination to which we’ve been traveling for many decades. This election may provide an off ramp, but only if we as Christians humble ourselves, pray, and repent of our own follies. God may turn and leave a blessing yet. That’s my hope.

  35. Debra – Your reminder of the importance of repenting of our own follies/sins is spot on. Real change has to come from God’s people repenting of our sins in both deed and attitude. That is what will bring on a spiritual awakening, which is what this country really needs.

Sad that we have to be reminded of this, but God works that way, reaching us in our own prideful thinking. Repenting isn’t something we do once but needs to be an ongoing, every-day practice.
