  1. I posted this late last night:

I am still wondering how the mainline media got away with hiding the truth about Biden. How long ago was that? No one talks about that deception anymore since cats and dogs are more important it seems. And whatever happened with all the missing children who came through the open border? They have been put under the bus. Where are the mainline media reports on that? But cats and dogs? Yes, they take center stage in importance. It’s all the missing stories that mean we don’t get a true picture of what is going on. If ABC people are such good buddies of Kamala, surely they had the scoop on Biden’s decline and should have let the public know, but who were they loyal to? Not the people they are suppose to serve.

  2. ‘Mainstream media’ has been dead for a while, but that’s hardly a news flash. It might surprise some of you to know that within the industry itself a number of folks have been criticizing it from within, including some of my colleagues in our rather small corner — talking about this for, well, decades now. Welcome to the discussion.

But the mainstream media is spilled milk as they say. The ideal was there but, as with most human endeavors, it was executed less than perfectly — or even well in many cases. (But it did have the advantage of having an ethical framework in place; but as we know, sticking to those can wane in the world of fallen human nature.)

The real debate now is what will replace it? And how can we become wise news “consumers” in this (hopefully) in-between state of the internet and social media? I don’t know what the answer to that dilemma is, but it is a serious question that probably has no easy answer — but it’s one that needs to be addressed, someday.

It’s been the “Wild West” with the explosion of social media and that has revealed a number of pitfalls, to put it mildly. I’m not sure what comes next but I hope the need for *something* better than what we have now can someday soon be seen and soberly considered. We all need sources of raw information that can be trusted and shared to some extent.

I’ve seen some hopeful efforts with small start-up sites in the past few years as things became so crazy — sites that put forth an effort to honestly and dispassionately — soberly — look at different sides of issues and doing so from across the political spectrum. They are trying to lower the temperature while exploring both left and right (and middle) views to encourage readers — news consumers, which is all of us — to think things through for ourselves but also to move somewhat beyond our own preferred preferred opinions.

I’m hopeful, but it will be messy for a long time to come.

So again, the real debate is an immediate one, not looking back.

  4. What we have now is the “silo” internet version of news, where folks just stay in their own partisan lanes. I don’t think that serves us as individuals — as believers who seek truth whether we may “like” it or not — or the nation — well.

  5. The Tangle newsletter that I receive in my email each day takes a look at a specific issue each day, then gives a rundown on what the left is saying and what the right is saying, ending with what Isaac Saul (who started the newsletter) has to say on it.

Saul has struck me as fair-minded, sometimes leaning more conservative on an issue, and sometime leaning more liberal on another issue, but usually not all the way to the left or right. As a result, he gets blasted by folks on either side for obviously being on the other side. 😀

(That’s something that has happened to me sometimes, too.)

He also re-appraises some of his views, and will write about it when he does.

Either the Alexa responses in the video were faked, or they have been changed.

  7. Kizzie, Tangle is one of the newer sites I was thinking of and I’ve appreciated that one as well.

I think people still want to read different sides of issues and I’m certainly not opposed to opinion journalism, it clearly has its place (though some examples are more thoughtful than others).

But I like the Tangle format of seeing arguments from both sides (and from various sources) on a single site.

  8. Just to add my 2 cents on the debate…I was disappointed that Trump stated he had not read project 2025. I had seen some posts about it, so spent a few hrs reading various chapters on their website. I would think it would be prudent for him to do so also. I am not in favor of their goals, particularly with agriculture.

“This is why businesses love Haitian workers.

An American citizen gets paid $16.50 per hour. No food stamps. No Social Security. No cash assistance. No rent assistance. No free car. No free car insurance.

A Haitian gets paid $9 per hour and they get everything else paid for. After considering all the federal benefits, it’s likely that the Haitian is making double, or perhaps much more than that, of what an American worker would make.

Probably upwards of $30 per hour, and the employer only has to pay $9 of that. No wonder they make such willing workers…”

  11. in my experience with Haitian employees:

the American citizen employee told my dad she hated him. Would not help him with self care in any way (nor did he ask), caused him to be fearful, would not give him his meds, would not feed them on a regular schedule, told the payers she was a CNA when she was not and got paid as such, etc.

the Haitians clearly cared deeply for both parents, were very attentive to them and their needs, taught me lots on the care for the elderly, won the respect and friendship of both parents, accepted the wage we could offer, put in as many hours as they could that we needed.

  14. Laying aside the eating-cats-and-dogs question, I have read various things that say that most of the Haitians are here legally with protected status (or some such wording). They were brought in to fill jobs that were vacant, because the town had been bleeding citizens for a while. It’s not their fault that they are being deemed eligible for those benefits. (I’m assuming that that may be due to their status.)

Also, the local Baptist church had been losing congregants over time as well, and is now filling up because many Haitians are our brothers and sisters in Christ.

In any large group of people, there will be the bad apples, sometimes worse than merely bad apples. But we shouldn’t paint the whole group in the same color.

We as Christians should know this by experience. It is the hypocritical Christians doing bad or questionable things that get the attention of unbelievers. I can’t tell you how many times over the years that I have had to point out to others on Facebook that the hypocritical or seemingly hateful Christians are in the minority, but get the most attention. It’s the same idea with other groups of people.

  18. Kizzie,

The excuse the Biden admin gave was they were brought here because of violence in Haiti, NOT to fill jobs.

The majority are not Christians, in fact quite the opposite, with the majority being members of a vodoo type religion, which includes the sacrificing of animals.

While not the case with the Haitians, as they arent technically illegals, Christian organizations are helping to aid this invasion. They’re profiting from it. See yesterday’s link on how financially beneficial it’s been for the Catholic NGOs. Be careful assuming that just because it’s a religious organization, they’re doing what’s best and just for anyone.

  19. And, as has been discussed here before, it’s the downside of polling (they can be all over the map):

~ WASHINGTON, Sept 12 (Reuters) – Democratic U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris leads Republican Donald Trump 47% to 42% in the race to win the Nov. 5 presidential election, increasing her advantage after a debate against the former president that voters largely think she won, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll that closed on Thursday.

The two-day poll showed Harris with a five percentage point lead among registered voters, just above the four-point advantage she had over Trump in an Aug. 21-28 Reuters/Ipsos poll. ~

But it still will be the swing states to watch and those remain very close, too close to call.

  21. Kizzie, thanks for doing the experiment with Alexa. I was going to ask my son to do the same with his.

It is possible to program specific responses into “your” Alexa, as my son has done with his. If someone posts a video saying, “See how Alexa responds to…!”, never take it seriously unless you try it yourself.

  22. I never listened to Tucker in the past as we never watched Fox national news, only local. I do enjoy listening to some of his interviews online of guests like Ben Carson. It’s okay to smugly dis him though because he does not fit in with certain camps.

He does seem to be evolving as a baby Christian who until recently had never read the Bible. It is always good to witness people engage with the Bible and begin to know more and practice more. I liked hearing how he put the road to becoming an alcoholic behind him so as not to lose his family. We can always say something good about people if we try hard enough.

Even with Kamala, I give her points for being good at presentation when she is prepared. She was probably good in the courtroom as an attorney doing what they must do.

  23. Polls should never be read in isolation. They should be looked at in aggregate, known for biases and past record, and for trends.

Rasmussen is a pro Republican pollster always two or three percentage points to the Republicans. Yesterday it polled Trump at +2 while NY Post had Harris at +3, Reuters and Morning Consult +5 for Harris. The Post poll was surprising, they usually lean Republican. In aggregate, it’s about +3 for Harris esp given the Post bias.

More interesting in July, Rasmussen had Trump at +7 to +5 and now they poll him at +1 or +2. Reuters had a tie in July and now has Harris at +5. The numbers differ but they agree Trump lost 5 points in 45 days.

DJ made some good points on “silos”. It’s why Trump supporters couldn’t believe he lost in 2020 despite it being obvious from polls. Its also why the “eating pets” comment was made. In the Trump silo, it was mentioned prior to the debate so 35% of the country knew the story but the other 65% had same look on their face as Harris during the debate. If Trump was prepped and disciplined during the debate he would not have said it but he didn’t do his homework so he resorted to clichés from his silo

  24. Janice, I liked Tucker when he was starting out, in his pre-fox bowtie days, he was a reasonable conservative voice (from the times I saw him). He is Episcopalian — and he was back then as well, so not sure where the new believer idea comes from. He’s always been a professing Christian and a political conservative from what I’ve known of him.

His head swelled at Fox (thinking he was indispensable; he wasn’t as it turned out) and most recently he has been rightly criticized for his rewriting of WWII history. That’s where many conservatives drew a line, wondering if he’d finally just gone a little “off.”

  25. An article I recently read made a point that I have seen myself, which is that various sources exclude aspects of news stories, or whole news stories, that do not align with the political views of their readership. That can make it frustrating when trying to share that aspect or story with someone who will merely dismiss the source because it is either liberal or conservative.

  26. Agree w/HR about never reading polls in isolation.

They also change almost day to day, certainly week to week, when it gets this late in an election cycle.

We’re now officially in the “we’ll see” stage.

  27. Becoming a “celebrity,” even in a small circle of like-minded followers as Tucker did, is dangerous ground. Fox cut him when the off-line recordings became too hard to defend.

The WWII interviews were very recent, but if he’s trying to turn around, that’s good to hear. Probably best always to do that kind of work quietly and by staying out of the limelight, however.

  28. About selective story picking or reporting — FoxNews got its start by suggesting (correctly) that there were stories the MSM was not covering.

According to an interview I saw with Brit Hume years later, the aim (and hope) in those early days was to force the MSM to broaden their coverage.

Instead, MSM seemed to double down.

    Then Fox doubled down.

    And then social-political media exploded.

It’s kind of a Humpty-Dumpty tale where we’re now left with trying to put *something* more rational back together again.

  29. AJ, thanks for the good backup on the Alexa bias story. The starting point of the discussion was an Instagram post from someone I’d never heard of, so I didn’t give it much credibility.

I’ve found other sources confirming it too.

Hard to see how they could make a “mistake” like that. I have to wonder if they put it out there intentionally knowing they would have to take it down once there was an outcry, but for those few days it would make a difference. Shaking my head.
