  1. Happy Labor Day!

Another beautiful header. Thanks, Cheryl, for sharing your wonderful photography.

We are having a slow and overcast start to this day.

We watched two episodes of Jesse Stone on Prime Friday night. I had never seen it, but of all the offerings on Prime videos free for members, I knew it would appeal to Art. He looked through the long scroll of what we could get and that was all he saw that appealed.

  2. had a talk last night. I feel that God guided my words. It was a good beginning. I also asked who was here when I was gone, she was surprised that I knew but said it was my other granddaughter

she also did some cleaning. I told her that I would not be getting her a card to come in the gate. This way is free and I get a text message every time

  3. Re the header: That is the Superstition Mountains, one of my favorite spots from childhood. We used to camp in an area beyond them, but not terribly far from Phoenix, a few times a year. One time when I was a young teenager, my parents and my younger brother and sister and I went to the Superstitions and walked around a bit. Dad and I wanted to take the trail to the top, and the rest didn’t want to, so they went back to the car and Dad and I did it together.

The Superstitions were on my must-see list for this trip. The area has changed a bit now, though, in that it is now a state park and you have to pay to enter. It’s called a day rate, but they specifically say that if you leave and come back, you have to pay again, which seems weird to me. Anyway I drove in and walked around and took some photos. It was somewhat early in the morning, and a lot is said about morning light in photography, but the shadows were on my side of the peaks and it just wasn’t pretty light. My hosts had talked about a botanical garden that isn’t far from here; they wanted to take me there, but the husband was having eye issues, so they reluctantly decided they couldn’t go, but they recommended that I go anyway, and I left the house unsure whether I would. (I had a lot of places I wanted to see, and it was going to cost me $30 to get in.) When the light was bad on the Superstitions, I decided to go ahead and go to the garden, and then come here again on my way home.

However, I’m Scottish (we’re frugal) and had no intention of paying the entrance fee a second time in one day, so when I came back, I put the day permit on my dash and drove up to just before the toll booth, and took some photos from there, and then went back along the road and took some more photos, stopping periodically to get different angles. This was one of the ones taken from the road, not inside the park. The lighting was indeed much better in the afternoon, and some clouds had come along. In the morning the sky was gray and the mountains looked “flat,” but here we had pretty blue sky and clouds and some sunlight.

When I got there in the morning, I remembered all the times we drove past these peaks, how much I loved them, the time my dad and I hiked them, and tears came to my eyes. Then I called my husband from the parking lot (he wasn’t able to travel with me), and as soon as he answered I started crying. I had no intention of driving back to Tortilla Flat, where we used to camp, since the road back to it is awful, a switchback mountain road. But I learned that the road has collapsed and is closed anyway. But I was glad the road was open this far!

  4. Sounds like such a moving trip for you, Cheryl, I’m so glad you were able to go.

Speaking of collapsed roads, our landslides continue to the immediate west of us on the hilly part of the peninsula. Another slide area was just discovered and is moving even faster than the main slide so homes in some sections had their utilities all cut off in recent days/weeks, forcing many to evacuate the area altogether. Friends from church said so far they’re marginally (only) ok — but all of this is now impacting the homes right across the street from them.

The coastal road that winds around the peninsula — one we all take — is in such a mess now that it likely will have to be closed. It already had one spot nicknamed the “ski jump” which now is causing cars to bottom out.

This is my final day off 😦 — doing some work around the house but also hoping to get Abby to the dog park (maybe) at the end of the day. Last time we headed out for a car ride, though, she jumped in — and then right back out again and would not get back into the car. I’m hoping that was just a one-time thing. 😦 We will soon find out.

  5. Hey, just a thought DJ–have you tried teaching Abby to understand the term “dog park”? If she were to understand the phrase, perhaps it would help her to see the destination rather than the transportation.

Of course, to be honest you would then eventually need to teach her the term “vet’s office.”

  6. We have friends who winter in view of the mountain. We went to Tortilla Flat with them, too, among other places. We visited them a few times down there. I guess it is one friend, now, since her husband passed away. Lots of people from up here winter down there, however. Plus, I do have several relatives down there. Always fun to explore new places.

  7. Oh, Arizona pictures! I so love that desert. We spent our honeymoon exploring around the Phoenix area and our 25th exploring around Tucson.

We attended a wedding this weekend (DIL’s sister’s wedding). It felt sort of weird to be invited to it, but we decided to go as we could really help wrangle our grandchildren. I ended up holding 2 month old Vera quite a bit as DIL was a bridesmaid and seemingly the only sane member of her family 🙂

The twins and their little brother were ring bearers – so cute all dressed the same. Wesley did a great job holding the box with the rings and giving it to the pastor. The 3 boys walked up holding hands, but daddy needed to come too.

We spent our 40th anniversary with them and walked to get ice cream and had a great time with all the grands – so fun.
