I was desperate for a good mindless distraction before I can fall asleep this morning. I would have settled for a ridiculous Trump tweet, but as soon as I saw this headline I knew I had a winner “DNC Protesters March Through Chicago Streets Dressed as Abortion Pills”. It could be worse. They could be pillaging and looting while dressed as abortion pills. The world is still askew, but God is still on the throne.
I hope everyone understands that I stayed out of all that because I didn’t want to make things worse, as I sometimes do. I wasn’t trying to hurt feelings or cause a ruckus, yet my simple 2 sentence statement on Friday appears to have done just that.

Someone here mentioned family differences, and my family was not one that engaged in political discussions so I have been here on this thread more often than not to pick up news I might have missed from sources I don’t usually see. All the commentary could be interesting, but at times felt redundant and sometimes nagging or badgering. It is good at times to stop, take a heart check, and do a reset if necessary.
I have truly been thankful for AJ’s news posts. I get so much news from the liberal side already, and to constantly be told I need to know what the other side is saying has felt like a parent telling me as a child that I am doing something wrong. That is the condescending that I mentioned previously along with the feeling pushed on me that God places higher value on those who view things from a loftier vantage point.
I sometimes wonder if only the people with theological backgrounds and those who follow them are destined for heaven in the eyes of some people. Am I wrong to think that God designed His Scriptures to have meaning for the less than well educated who may take His word literally without attaching all the other interpretations that can be found through deep study, pondering, speculation, and logical human thought processes? I know there are Christian babies who are new to the word and develop more fully over time, but they still may not be well educated enough to get all the nuances.
The spiritual aspects of the discussion here have led me to wonder about these things.
Corrie Ten Boom worked with what we call the special needs children these days. She said we need to be able to explain the gospel simply enough for them. That is not easy and yet, so simple. How God loves these people and also those he made with great intellect and all in between! He made some to be philosophers and some to do other things with their minds and hands.
I think it may have been Edith Schaeffer who said we have to be careful not to think everyone else has to be engaged deeply in whatever the Holy Spirit leads us to do. Some are called to study the bible more deeply, for example, than others.

I hope it’s clear that when I sometimes try to debunk a particular post, it’s not because I’m on “the other side”, but because I want to see us all focus on good arguments and not leave ourselves open to being dismissed by the other side because of bad arguments.
With that in mind, I noticed the post on Saturday about Harris’s “stroke of a pen” comments. Back in her 2020 campaign she gave a speech in which she talked about how she learned as a junior prosecutor how much power she had to change a person’s life with just the stroke of a pen, how charging someone with even a minor crime can cause loss of work, loss of income, loss of respect, and so forth.
This has been circulated as a point of outrage to show how evil and power hungry she is.
But I found and listened to the context in which she said it. Her point was that we should be careful who we put into office, because they have the power to do great harm or great good. In her view, Trump, who was then in office, did not understand the harm he could do with the power of his pen, and someone else should be elected who would use it for good instead of for harm. She wasn’t boasting about how she could hurt people with power.
All this to say, the more outrageous something sounds, the more important it is to check the context before repeating it. If we put forth bad arguments, our good arguments that might convince someone are less likely to be taken seriously.
And in case I haven’t been clear enough, I do find lots of reasons for outrage about Harris, and the more we bring legitimate ones to light, the better.

Thanks, Kevin. Context for quotes is always helpful. Your link certainly demonstrates that Harris is well aware of her power and the power of the presidency. Now the question is what has she done with the power she’s had in the past, and what would she do with the power of the presidency if she obtains it. It’s possible she’s done some good things with her power. But we also know she used her power to encourage the mayhem of 2020 and to raise money to bail out many participants. Having said that, I do agree with you that it’s important to not blow things out of context because it does weaken other legitimate concerns.
Be careful of closed captioning. Recently, closed captioning on a video of Trump talking to Christians, in which he said, “I’m a Christian,” interpreted a small something-or-other in Trump’s enunciation into “I’m not a Christian.” There was a small vocalization or something in there that was interpreted that way. A hearing impaired woman (a friend of a friend) who watched the video relies on closed captioning, and she believed that he said “not”.

Yes, she said she learned that she could, but did not say that she would. The lesson was to use that power to lift people up and not to beat people down. That is what the context provides.
And Debra, I agree 100%, the real test is what she has actually done, not what ideal she has preached.
Well if we’re honest we have to admit that relatively few people of power are brazen enough to actually say they’re going to use their power for evil or to sow discord. They just do it. And the best way to know what they’re going to do is to see what they have done already and why.
Now I’m curious to know if anyone knows of something of significance Harris has done that they think is positive? Any policy?

I hope it’s clear that when I sometimes try to debunk a particular post, it’s not because I’m on “the other side”, but because I want to see us all focus on good arguments and not leave ourselves open to being dismissed by the other side because of bad arguments.
With that in mind, I noticed the post on Saturday about Harris’s “stroke of a pen” comments. Back in her 2020 campaign she gave a speech in which she talked about how she learned as a junior prosecutor how much power she had to change a person’s life with just the stroke of a pen, how charging someone with even a minor crime can cause loss of work, loss of income, loss of respect, and so forth.
This has been circulated as a point of outrage to show how evil and power hungry she is.
But I found and listened to the context in which she said it. Her point was that we should be careful who we put into office, because they have the power to do great harm or great good. In her view, Trump, who was then in office, did not understand the harm he could do with the power of his pen, and someone else should be elected who would use it for good instead of for harm. She wasn’t boasting about how she could hurt people with power.
All this to say, the more outrageous something sounds, the more important it is to check the context before repeating it. If we put forth bad arguments, our good arguments that might convince someone are less likely to be taken seriously.
And in case I haven’t been clear enough, I do find lots of reasons for outrage about Harris, and the more we bring legitimate ones to light, the better.

Thanks, Kevin. Context for quotes is always helpful. Your link certainly demonstrates that Harris is well aware of her power and the power of the presidency. Now the question is what has she done with the power she’s had in the past, and what would she do with the power of the presidency if she obtains it. It’s possible she’s done some good things with her power. But we also know she used her power to encourage the mayhem of 2020 and to raise money to bail out many participants. Having said that, I do agree with you that it’s important to not blow things out of context because it does weaken other legitimate concerns.

Be careful of closed captioning. Recently, closed captioning on a video of Trump talking to Christians, in which he said, “I’m a Christian,” interpreted a small something-or-other in Trump’s enunciation into “I’m not a Christian.” There was a small vocalization or something in there that was interpreted that way. A hearing impaired woman (a friend of a friend) who watched the video relies on closed captioning, and she believed that he said “not”.

Mumsee, I think racism isn’t racism when Democrats do it, at least that’s how it seems. But that could change in five minutes with a new set of rules. It’s an exciting time to be alive, isn’t it. There is a song on one of the Christian radio stations that talks about how out of control the world seems right now. But then it says “We’re in the right place and time……Maybe we were made for these days” or something like that. I think he’s right, we were made for these days Bride of Christ shine on! Yes, she said she learned that she could, but did not say that she would. The lesson was to use that power to lift people up and not to beat people down. That is what the context provides.
And Debra, I agree 100%, the real test is what she has actually done, not what ideal she has preached.

Well if we’re honest we have to admit that relatively few people of power are brazen enough to actually say they’re going to use their power for evil or to sow discord. They just do it. And the best way to know what they’re going to do is to see what they have done already and why.
Now I’m curious to know if anyone knows of something of significance Harris has done that they think is positive? Any policy?
