  1. It is a cool, gorgeous morning here. Robins decided they needed to build a nest right half on my back deck, close to the back door which is in the dining area and kitchen. They were not happy with me baking this morning. I try to only bake when it is cooler, and this was the morning. Umm, robins, I was here first.

The robins have at least three eggs. I had no idea they give the eggs days apart. I guess it is a no brainer, since chickens do that. I have pictures of one egg, two eggs and three eggs. Next will be the chicks. We walk right by this nest often. Recently we had the guy, putting in the new floor, using his electric saw out there. It will be fun to watch the little ones, however, they are messy and now are yelling at me from some deck chairs. 😦

  2. The problem with cats. Our cats are doing a great job with the gophers and other rodents, that came in from the fields when my mower was down and the grass grew tall. But, sadly, they don’t differentiate and enjoy fledglings as well. We have not been able to persuade the birds to safer areas or the cats to leave them alone. I guess a diet of only rodents makes jack a dull cat.

  3. We just came back from a walk, noon and eighty degrees, and our local fawns were out resting at the bottom of a hill. Last year we saw the first fawn on June 1 and then started seeing both twins in July; this year we didn’t see them until July and this is our second sighting. The mother is quite distinctive; she has three parallel lines (scars) on one side and her udder is also misshapen (with a big bulge in front), so we know we’re seeing the same doe.

Because they are growing up in our condo development, where there is little traffic and the people who walk are regulars, the deer are fairly tame. Last year the mother was rather protective when the babies were still young (as they are now); she didn’t like us watching them and would move away and they’d follow her. But this time on our first day of seeing them, we happened upon them in a different spot than the hill where we usually see them, and we stopped to watch them and one fawn came directly toward me and got quite close, and its mother didn’t caution it. So I think she learned last summer that my husband and I are safe, and this summer she’s less inclined to be nervous around us.

Today they were lying down for several minutes, chewing their cud, at the bottom of the hill but out in the open. Eventually one got to its feet, then the second one did, and then they walked toward each other and sniffed noses and licked each other’s faces.

One thing I really love about summer is baby animals. So far I’ve seen baby deer, raccoons, chipmunks, muskrat, rabbits, and gray squirrels, and of course lots of baby birds (mostly bluebirds). I wish I were one of those lucky people who could watch foxes, bobcats, or badgers. But I know where ospreys nest, and great blue herons, and baby bluebirds are everywhere in our neighborhood this summer.

  4. It’s a two churches, two Bible studies day for me. First one at my former church and next one at the large church where Michelle spoke. So thankful I have people offering to take me.

We kept having the power go out last night. Three times! A friend offered to pick up my half-cooked chicken in the crock pot and finish cooking it. Right before she headed out the door, our power came on. The church did not seem to have WIFI this morning. We ended up watching the video portion of the lesson on my phone.

We have cooler and less humid weather today. A reward for going through that storm.

  6. We go by a couple of different osprey nests fairly regularly. It is interesting to see the birds, but they are so high up. Yesterday we saw a couple of the young birds on the side of the nest, part way down. There is no real good place to park and watch, (and we had no time to do so anyway) or we would have. The variety of just birds is amazing.

  7. Baby foxes are so cute and fun to watch. I saw some young groundhogs recently – they’re funny looking.

Our robin’s eggs have just hatched (they’re in our lilac bush). Hoping our dog nor our cat get them.

  8. We have a red fox family here on our ocean bluffs who sometimes wander into neighborhoods, though I’ve not seen them. But we have a fox-watcher who posts wonderful photos, include of the youngsters playing.

Had a long eye doctor visit this afternoon — all’s well, but a while back I began noticing cloudy spots at the outsides of both eyes.

So today, after some more tests with they eye doctor (who’s also an MD and did my cataract surgeries late last year), I finally found out they are nothing to worry about, these shadows sometimes turn up following cataract surgeries; they either go away with time for folks adjust. The areas are out of my field of vision, I only see the cloudiness if I turn my eyes way to the outer sides. Otherwise, I never notice them and rest of my vision seems fine.

But they did a couple “field of vision” tests today and it was a long appointment, so good thing I took the day off from work.

Tomorrow there’s more excitement — the knee doctor!

Life is now so much fun. (not)
