  2. President Trump is about 15 miles away today outside Allentown. He’s due to speak in about half an hour and the place is packed according to local news coverage I’m watching.

He’s supposed to speak at 7pm, here’s the livestream link.

  12. Iran-Israel . Israel attacked an Iranian consulate; a violation of international law. Iran’s response isn’t much different than a US/Israeli response to an attack on their embassy or consulate. Israel violated international law; Iranian retaliated, things are now even. The Western world should quietly be telling Israel to stand down.

Biden did not allow Iran to access billions. Biden was part of an administration that returned or unfroze billions of dollars that initially belonged to Iran. In exchange, Iran agreed to a nuclear treaty that included safeguards and monitors. Iran abided by the treaty but Trump cancelled it – a move that made no sense.

  13. When Trump was president, Russia was in Ukraine. Russia occupied Crimea, Luhansk and Donetsk in 2014 and the area has been in continuous conflict since that time. Trump essentially followed Obama’s policy of light support and refusal to recognise the Crimean annexation.

When Trump was president, Iran supported Houthis and Hamas. Iran supplied arms to both groups and to Hezabollah in Lebanon. Iran also supported Russia’s actions in Syria while Trump abandoned the US’s most faithful Middle East ally; the Kurds. When Trump was president, the 2020 shut down lowered gas prices. They had been on an upward trajectory since 2015. And taking account inflation and currency, retail gas prices were at their highest in 2008. In the beginning of 2020 when Trump was president, inflation was 2.5% and now it’s 3.1%. Sure there was a massive uptick in 2022 but that’s corporations using inflation as a cover for massive profit gouging. Perhaps Biden should have tried to enact a surplus profit tax but that would be socialism. And finally when Trump was president he inherited a good economy and then promptly drove to the ground from which Biden is slowly picking it up.

Not sure how Biden is starting WW3. By supporting Ukraine and Israel? He’s an old school democrat from the cold war. Protect American interests abroad while enacting mild social policies at home. He’s not much different from Truman, Eisenhower, JFK or Johnson.

Trump is the laughing stock of the world. Biden isn’t. No world leaders took Trump seriously. Trudeau is a trust fund baby who other world leaders tolerate but Trump is a trust fund baby that the rest found both annoying and funny. Sometimes he’s amusing – imitating North Korea, he won his own golf tournament in two different divisions. Biden’s presidency was welcomed with relief by the Europeans and other western allies.

Both are old and have their moments but Biden is far more willing to work with his staff, take advice and has experience. Trump on the other hand is a selfish man-child who doesn’t take advice and is running for pure personal reasons – its about revenge.

  14. Not sure why the Republicans keep banging the migration drum. I’m sure polling and past experience tell them to keep ratcheting up the fear factor. However, the counter to this drum beating which the Dems will/should use once the summer is over is Trump instructing Congress to scuttle a bi-partisan deal that essentially gave the Republicans everything they wanted on the immigration file. The Democrats were in a generous mood in order to remove immigration as an election campaign. After the election, the compromise and bipartisan support will be much harder to achieve. The Republicans threw away legislation they created in order to give Trump what he thinks is a winning issue.

Illegals don’t vote. The Democrats won’t support stricter measures because it will prevent legal votes by over-zealous poll watchers. Mind you, the easiest way to prevent voter fraud is to have a federal/state voter database created by income tax returns or other means.

Biden’s way to victory is voter turnout – the more people vote, the more likely he will win. 2020 was record setting turnout and he needs to repeat it. And that is why the Dobb decision and subsequent decisions elsewhere will be the real issue or the issue Democrats will campaign on. Abortion rights will motivate women to the polls. Arizona, for example, is now in play. Recognising this, Trump and others are backtracking

Another issue is the state of the Republican party. Although mergin the RNC with the Trump campaign will help with some fund raising, the state parties are broke. And much of the PAC money is going to Trump’s personal expenses. Organisationally, the takeover by the party by the Trump faction has led to resignations of experienced election workers. Elections are won through volunteers, phone banks, get out the vote groups, drivers, databases, etc. Resignations from professionals who are then replaced by political hacks will lower the efficiency of the campaign.

  15. This piece on the rise, and unreliability, of anonymous accounts also includes this brief explanation of a related matter:

~ “The claim that spread online this past week misused Social Security Administration data tracking routine requests made by states to verify the identity of individuals who registered to vote using the last four digits of their Social Security number. These requests are often made multiple times for the same individual, meaning they do not necessarily correspond one-to-one with people registering to vote.

The larger implication is that the cited data represents people who entered the U.S. illegally and are supposedly registering to vote with Social Security numbers they received for work authorization documents. But only U.S. citizens are allowed to vote in federal elections and illegal voting by those who are not is exceedingly rare because states have processes to prevent it.” ~

    Also mentioned in the piece:

~ “The art of trolling is to get the other person enraged,” he said. “And we now know getting someone enraged really fuels engagement and gives you followers and so will get you paid. So now it’s sort of a business.”

Some pseudonymous accounts on X have used their brands to build loyal audiences on other platforms, from Instagram to the video-sharing platform Rumble and the encrypted messaging platform Telegram. The accounts themselves — and many of their followers — publicly promote their pride in America and its founding documents.

It’s concerning that many Americans place their trust in these shadowy online sources without thinking critically about who is behind them or how they may want to harm the country, said Kara Alaimo, a communications professor at Farleigh Dickinson University who has written about toxicity on social media.

“We know that foreign governments including China and Russia are actively creating social media accounts designed to sow domestic discord because they think weakening our social fabric gives their countries a competitive advantage,” she said. “And they’re right.” ~

  16. The New York flea market reminded me of early 90s Poland. People from the ex-USSR came to Warsaw to sell whatever they managed to drag across the border – cigarettes, vodka, knock off clothing, shoes, and even AK 47s. A friend who was too curious for his own good managed to find Russian mobsters offering battlefield nukes, prostitutes etc. The Poles called it capitalism until the EU told them to crack down on the open air markets in order to join the EU. Polish libertarians protested the intrusion of the gov’t on the private market place.

Thirty years later my daughter met a non-binary lesbian girl from Russia whose parents paid for her to be foreign student in Canada so she would stopped being arrested in LGBQT protest in Moscow. In 2022, her parents then sent her younger brother to Canada, also as a foreign student, to evade the military draft for Ukraine war. He stayed at my place for two months until he found his own place. After a few conversations, I discovered his parents met while selling knock off clothing and vodka in Polish flea markets. They used their profits to build a legitimate import business that pays for their children to stay in Canada and New Zealand and for them to operate a bed and breakfast in the Canary Islands (I have an open invitation since I took their kids in).

Why curtail the free market? Those illegals selling merchandise on the streets may one day be part of the legitimate market operating a business that provides a service and also provides economic benefits to host nations – Spain, Canada, Poland, Ukraine and Armenia.
